As the fifth anniversary of 9/11 nears, Christina Asquith finds academics querying the official version of events

Shards of glass and dust from the World Trade Centre towers sit on Professor Steven Jones's desk at Brigham Young University in Utah. Evidence, he says, of the biggest cover-up in history - one too evil for most to believe, but one he has staked his academic career on exposing.

The attacks of September 11, Jones asserts, were an "inside job", puppeteered by the neoconservatives in the White House to justify the occupation of oil-rich Arab countries, inflate military spending and expand Israel.

"We don't believe that 19 hijackers and a few others in a cave in Afghanistan pulled this off acting alone," says Jones. "We challenge this official conspiracy theory and, by God, we're going to get to the bottom of this."

While this sinister spin strikes most American academics as absurd, Jones, a physics professor, is not alone. He is a member of 9/11 Scholars for Truth, a recently formed group of around 75 US professors determined to prove 9/11 was a hoax. In essays and journals, they are using their association with prominent universities to give a scholarly stamp to conspiracy theories long believed in parts of Europe and the Arab world, and gaining ground among Americans due to frustration with the Iraq war and opposition to President Bush's heavily hyped "war on terror".

From a random blog I stumbled across.

Talking to a buddy about my new hobby involving conspiracy theorists at ground zero, he asked, "Now, why are you doing this again?"

My answer is three fold.

1. I think it's extremely distasteful for people to go to a grave site of 3000 and imply that some of the passengers in the plane and members of the FDNY were "in on it". That's like believing that only 200,000 Jews died during World War II and preaching outside of the Holocaust Museum.

2. I hate bad science. If there were a bunch of intelligent design advocates that protested once a week in front of the Natural History Museum, I'd go bug them. Unfortunately, New York City has a dearth of creationist nut jobs.

3. These people are a comedy goldmine. Not a minute goes by down there when I don't think, "I can't believe that just came out of your mouth."

I had been speaking to a man who was late to work at Windows of the World at the top of the World Trade Center that day and was there when the planes hit. The poor guy was mobbed by nuts asking if "he really saw the second plane." For those not in the know, apparantly United Flight 175 was CGI'ed. I shit you not.

One leading political light from 9/11 singled out by the mainstream media for supreme heroism was New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani. The effort has succeeded to the point where Guiliani is currently being boomed in many of these same media circles as a potential Republican presidential nominee for 2008.

Giuliani has made the media mainstream adulation blitz easier through his penchant of parading as an all-purpose, All-American nice guy, wearing his New York Fire Department cap with grassroots relish except for those occasions when he visits Yankee Stadium.

In those instances Giuliani switches to a Yankee cap and becomes one of the happy crowd as he enjoys the sport called America's favorite pastime and roots for the home team.

When it comes to 9/11, the very crisis that prompted the Giuliani national boomlet, however, many questions remain unanswered. Some of the most disturbing questions arise from the discovery and subsequent comments of Scott Forbes, someone who should have become a household name had the mainstream media done its job properly and raised important questions that have been largely left begging.

Around mid-2002 the case for controlled demolition of the WTC was essentially proven in the minds of many in the 911 truth movement. It was about this time that a small group of researchers discovered an even more remarkable facet of 9/11. Specifically, the shocking realization that the TV networks aired fake video of animated, CGI planes striking the WTC.

I was the first person to declare that the TV networks aired fake video. Since those early days many people have joined in support of this conclusion. At the moment, the question of whether real Boeing 767s struck the WTC is the hottest topic in the 911 Truth Movement. This is the area of research that is most promising for reaching the general public.
