Leahy Takes Chertoff to Woodshed Over Vermont Checkpoints

WASHINGTON — Sen. Patrick Leahy chastised Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff Wednesday for his agency’s plan to build a permanent immigration checkpoint in central Vermont, wryly exclaiming that Chertoff should just “federalize Vermont.”

The interaction comes as the Bush administration is proposing a $4 million project to build fixed facilities within 100 miles of the Canadian border to conduct random vehicle checks for illegal immigrants, drugs and weapons, according to Leahy.

“So what you’re saying is in a little state like mine everyone should be stopped going down that interstate, no matter whether they’re going to visit a sick relative at the VA hospital?” Leahy prodded Chertoff in a Judiciary Committee hearing.

“We’re all sort of presumed guilty until proven innocent,” the Vermont Democrat added. “It sounds like Big Brother gone awry.”

Chertoff said, “Here’s the bottom line. Having checkpoints make sense.”

Obama: I don't carry a Council on Foreign Relations card or know any 'special handshake'

Worries about One World Order and a North American Union have been "ginned up by the blogs and the Internet," Sen. Barack Obama told a Lancaster, Pennsylvania audience in a stump speech as he continued his tour through the battleground state.

The Illinois senator also defended the recently re-authorized Patriot Act.

Responding to a question from the audience, asking whether he was a member for the Council on Foreign Relations, a group many allege is leading a move toward one world government, Obama said:

"I don’t know if I’m an official member. I’ve spoken there before. It basically is a forum where people talk about foreign policy. There is no official membership. I don’t have a card, or you know a special handshake or anything like that."

Sen. Hillary Clinton has spoken several times to the club. Comments she made today against NAFTA, were posted on the group's website.

WASHINGTON - Homeland security officials on Friday hinted at a possible face-saving deal to end their standoff with a handful of states over new driver's license rules — a dispute that, left unresolved, could cause big air travel headaches.

For weeks, the Homeland Security Department has been headed toward a showdown with some states over a law called Real ID, which would require new security measures for state-issued driver's licenses. Yet a late Good Friday letter from a top DHS official suggested Washington may be backing away from a messy fight.

South Carolina, Maine and Montana are the only states that have not sought extensions to comply, or already started toward compliance with Real ID, which was passed after the 2001 terror attacks on New York and Washington.

On Friday, the federal agency granted Montana an extension, even though state officials didn't ask for one and insist they will not adhere to the Real ID law.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly
Even die-hard conspiracy theorists will be dubious about the sinister government-led plots that form the shaky foundation of this political thriller. Alten, best-known for his gory novels featuring giant prehistoric sharks (Meg; The Trench), goes well beyond the already far-fetched idea that the Bush administration let the devastating 9/11 attacks happen to further the neoconservative agenda of reshaping the Middle East. In 2012, with centrist conservative David McKuin in the White House, the federal government plots to detonate a nuclear bomb in a U.S. city and blame Iran as a cover to take out that country's radical leadership. Standing in the plotters' way is Ace Futrell, an energy expert whose murdered wife was possibly targeted by U.S. intelligence. An awkward mix of actual and fictional political figures (Hillary Clinton is still in the Senate in 2012, having lost the 2008 election to McKuin) doesn't make this paranoid and superficial book more plausible. I would believe that my knowledge and experience and background clearly indicates that if the phone rang in the White House and I was the one to answer it, I would be the one to best address a national security crisis. [3/3/08]

Required Viewing For All Patriots: "In Lies We Trust" is the "Loose Change" of the Medical-Industrial Complex

I have seen several excellent medical-truth documentaries recently, but this one seems to coherently connect the dots between several controversial medical subjects, and to the big picture of historical and present-day deceptive government control of the populace,

As an ever bigger picture with greater perspective of the situation, I have learned there are at least three major areas of deceptive government control of the populace, with their own means of sustenance and control:

1. Military-Industrial Complex; means of sustenance and control: propogation and perpeutation among the populace of war.
2. Medical-Industrial Complex; means of sustenance and control: propogation and perpeuation among the populace of sickness.
3. Financial-Industrial Complex; means of sustenance and control: propagation and perpetuation among the populace of debt.

Is 9/11 written between the lines in "The Mist"?

Those of us who have a genuine appreciation for art in all forms, including motion pictures, know that the relevance of an artwork is not measured by how many awards are bestowed upon it, but by what it communicates to us as individuals, and to society as a whole. That being said, if The Mist is not already considered a classic American film, it soon will be. It is a horror movie on the same level as The Exorcist, Jaws, The Shining, etc. The writing, the acting, and the direction are all flawless.

It does not have what most films have (including most classics), and that is a happy ending. This film was created to communicate a message. What that message is varies with the interpretation of each viewer. The message I got was this: We're in the shit, what are you (meaning me) going to do about it?

Martin King's Letter From Birmingham Jail

This letter is dedicated to those of you in the 9/11 Truth Movement who mistakenly believe we can achieve more success more quickly - by cooling our heels.

April 16, 1963

MY DEAR FELLOW CLERGYMEN:

While confined here in the Birmingham city jail, I came across your recent statement calling my present activities "unwise and untimely." Seldom do I pause to answer criticism of my work and ideas. If I sought to answer all the criticisms that cross my desk, my secretaries would have little time for anything other than such correspondence in the course of the day, and I would have no time for constructive work. But since I feel that you are men of genuine good will and that your criticisms are sincerely set forth, I want to try to answer your statements in what I hope will be patient and reasonable terms.

I think I should indicate why I am here In Birmingham, since you have been influenced by the view which argues against "outsiders coming in." I have the honor of serving as president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, an organization operating in every southern state, with headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia. We have some eighty-five affiliated organizations across the South, and one of them is the Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights. Frequently we share staff, educational and financial resources with our affiliates. Several months ago the affiliate here in Birmingham asked us to be on call to engage in a nonviolent direct-action program if such were deemed necessary. We readily consented, and when the hour came we lived up to our promise. So I, along with several members of my staff, am here because I was invited here I am here because I have organizational ties here.

Never Forget?...no, we won't ever forget.

If there was a contest for the most ironic 9/11-related photograph ever shot, this one might well win. It is of a woman jubilantly christening the USS New York, which was partially constructed from the steel remains of WTC. Nice, huh?

I'm sorry I put the link instead of the actual photo, because I tried to copy and paste the photo (there was no embed code), but was unable to. If someone could please tell me how they upload a photograph to a blog entry, I would appreciate it. Thanks.
