Unemployment in the US is at Great Depression levels. When discouraged and part-time workers are included, the real unemployment rate (how it used to be counted in official statistics) is over 20%. This has predictable outcomes for our children: one million homeless students, class sizes of 40-50 while 100,000 laid-off teachers sit at home, and our children's growing disgust with American so-called ingenuity and leadership.

Most people do not know that Abraham Lincoln is a hero for his acts as a freshman member of the House of Representatives in the Congress of 1847-1849. Lincoln demanded that the President of the US provide specific evidence justifying the US invading a foreign country, suspecting that the President’s claims of a defensive war were lies to propagandize an offensive war for territorial control against a weaker nation. He did so despite the lack of support from most of his own political party. He demanded the facts despite his being painted by political opponents and the press as “unpatriotic.” The propaganda defeated Lincoln at his next election; his name slurred as “spotty Lincoln.” We now know that Lincoln was correct that the US President had indeed lied about the cause of war.

If acts against the Constitution cause US troops to be attacked, the meaning of treason has tangible war-like and enemy-like results against the United States.

The wars formerly known as “Terror” were not in response to any documented national security threat from Iraq, Afghanistan, or Iran. One of the arguments for US troops to remain in the two countries we invaded is that even if our wars were mistakes, it’s our duty to stay until those countries can manage their own security. If US troops leave, we’ll subject civilians to escalating violence.

As eminent Princeton philosopher Harry Frankfurt distinguished in his 2005 Bestseller as a strictly academic term, that rhetoric is bullshit.

When political “leadership” makes that argument, it’s a lie of omission. One of the key statistics to determine how well government policy is supportive of labor is unemployment. A government role in employment may be distasteful for some of you, but give me a moment to explain government's rightful role in supporting full employment.
