Noam, I care! And I care because the very document that created the United States --the US Constitution --tells us in precise and legal language that the American people are 'sovereign'. If the US government --the 'hired hands' whom we, the people, have tasked with the day to day job of governance --is in any way complicit in the attacks of 911, then the crimes of mass murder and high treason have been perpetrated against us! If 911 was an inside job, then we have no legitimate government! I call that 'significance'!

September 11 suspects seek guilty pleas at Guantanamo

GUANTANAMO BAY U.S. NAVAL BASE, Cuba (Reuters) - The self-styled mastermind of the September 11 attacks and four co-defendants told a military judge at Guantanamo on Monday that they wanted to confess and plead guilty.

But the defendants, some of whom have previously said they welcomed martyrdom, decided not to enter any pleas until after the judge decides whether guilty pleas would prevent their execution.

That means the death penalty case against the highest-ranking al Qaeda suspects in U.S. custody will not be resolved until after President-elect Barack Obama takes office on January 20.

Obama has said he will shut down the widely condemned Guantanamo prison camp and try detainees in the regular U.S. civilian or military courts rather than the special Guantanamo tribunals created by the Bush administration.

Barack Obama is on record as advocating a military escalation in Afghanistan. Before sinking any deeper into that quagmire, we might do well to learn something about recent Afghan history and the role played by the United States.

Less than a month after the 11 September 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, US leaders began an all-out aerial assault upon Afghanistan, the country purportedly harboring Osama bin Laden and his al Qaeda terrorist organization. More than twenty years earlier, in 1980, the United States intervened to stop a Soviet “invasion” of that country. Even some leading progressive writers, who normally take a more critical view of US policy abroad, treated the US intervention against the Soviet-supported government as “a good thing.” The actual story is not such a good thing.

"There is no right to due process for an alien who is not here," insisted the 44th Solicitor General of the United States, Gregory G. Garre, proudly representing the President of the United States. Garre is a teacher of the law, you see, and was attempting to show a three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit why one of their colleagues had overreached.

Garre claimed that U.S. District Judge Ricardo Urbina had exceeded his authority on Oct. 7, 2008 in ordering that 17 men held in Guantanamo for almost seven years be brought to his court for a fair hearing on the modalities of their release. Urbina wanted government lawyers to face the 17 prisoners and present the government’s argument as to why they should remain in detention.

"Aliens have no rights," Garre kept repeating. And they REALLY have no rights, he seemed to be saying, if they are "not physically in the United States."
