History Commons Project, Update on February 14, 2008

Contributors to the History Commons have launched a new project that will focus on A. Q. Khan’s nuclear network. The investigation will look at the network’s links to the Valerie Plame case, Sibel Edmonds' allegations, al-Qaeda, and much more. Contributors intend to document more than just how the network operated and what it bought and sold. Rather their intent is to develop a clear understanding of how this network was able to carry out its clandestine activities in the US. This project will be producing a lot of new material in the coming weeks.

Otherwise, the two most active timelines this week were the 9/11 and Loss of Civil Liberties projects.

The 9/11 project has continued to add more details about nuclear proliferation and Pakistan, in particular the case of a Pakistani charity front that said it would help al-Qaeda get nuclear weapons, but was close to Pakistan’s ISI.

Says She Has Been Following Recent Blockbuster Series in British Paper Concerning U.S. Nuclear Secrets Espionage, Allegations That Her Cover Company, Brewster Jennings, Was Exposed by a Former High-Ranking State Department Official as Far Back as 2001...

Former CIA operative Valerie Plame Wilson says the recent disclosures in the UK's Sunday Times concerning the sale of U.S. nuclear secrets to the foreign black market, as aided by high-ranking government officials, are "stunning."

The previously covert agent, who had worked in the agency's counter-proliferation division for years monitoring traffic in the nuclear black market under the guise of a cover company named Brewster Jennings until being outed by Bush Administration officials, was asked about the recent series of explosive stories in the British paper during an interview this morning with Florida radio host Henry Raines of American AM.

Dear Friends in the Dharma/Dhamma,

As the secretary of a new interfaith body I am writing to religious organizations of all kinds to invite them to mentally re-open the question of what really happened on that tragic day of September 11th, from which such a lot of suffering has flowed. Our founding Declaration and Appeal literature is attached.

As I am also a practicing Buddhist, I thought it might be helpful to add some reflections of a more Buddhist derivation, albeit in doing so I am aware that many of my readers will be much more expert than I in what the Buddha said.

I should also add that I am aware that whatever the truth behind 911 we still need to treat people of other backgrounds as individuals, regardless of their faith or nationality. And we do also need to understand and not hate the perpetrators of 911, whoever they really were.

One preliminary hurdle I may need to surmount can be expressed in the following objection:

The paper's Baghdad correspondent, Dexter Filkins, reported that US officials had obtained a 17-page letter, believed to have been written by the notorious terrorist Abu Musab al Zarqawi to the "inner circle" of al-Qa'ida's leadership, urging them to accept that the best way to beat US forces in Iraq was effectively to start a civil war.

The letter argued that al-Qa'ida, which is a Sunni network, should attack the Shia population of Iraq: "It is the only way to prolong the duration of the fight between the infidels and us. If we succeed in dragging them into a sectarian war, this will awaken the sleepy Sunnis."

Military prosecutors are in the final phases of preparing the first sweeping case against suspected conspirators in the plot that led to the deaths of nearly 3,000 Americans on Sept. 11, 2001, and drew the United States into war, people who have been briefed on the case said.

The charges, to be filed in the military commission system at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, would involve as many as six detainees held at the detention camp, including Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, the former senior aide to Osama bin Laden, who has said he was the principal planner of the plot.

The Air Force Academy was criticized by Muslim and religious freedom organizations for playing host on Wednesday to three speakers who critics say are evangelical Christians falsely claiming to be former Muslim terrorists.

The three men were invited as part of a weeklong conference on terrorism organized by cadets at the academy’s Colorado Springs campus under the auspices of the political science department.

The three will be paid a total of $13,000 for their appearance, some of it from private donors, said Maj. Brett Ashworth, a spokesman for the academy.

The three were invited because “they offered a unique perspective from inside terrorism,” Major Ashworth said. The conference is to result in a report on methods to combat terrorism that will be sent to the Pentagon, members of Congress and other influential officials, he added.

Despite funding problems, the History Commons continues to operate, and significant new material has been added to the 9/11 and Loss of Civil Liberties Timelines.
The main event in the 9/11 Timeline is the addition of a category to deal with A. Q. Khanâ's nuclear smuggling network, which was partially inspired by a series of recent articles in the Sunday Times. The category will be expanded rapidly to take in the various shenanigans during the Soviet-Afghan War, Sibel Edmonds, and Khanâs links to bin Laden, and will probably become an independent timeline soon. We will also attempt to stand our understanding of the Plame affair on its head.

Skeptic Michael Shermer has fallen for the most outlandish conspiracy theory of them all: the official conspiracy theory for which there is not a shred of evidence.

Shermer has bought into an official lie. Fallaciously, Shermer simply discounts as untrue anything that contradicts his pre-conceived notion, an elementary breach of logic. Shermer should know better. If he knows better and persists in spite of it, he is dishonest. Jean-Paul Sartre termed this behavior -- "bad faith". Bertolt Brecht was more blunt: "A man who does not know the truth is just an idiot but a man who knows the truth and calls it a lie is a crook!" Shermer, which one are you?
