The Ombudsman2

What follows is more of a grab bag rather than an ombudsman's mailbag.

Included are a couple of unusual but not widely known episodes that unfolded last week that I thought might be of interest more broadly to PBS viewers. They can be seen to have at least some association with PBS in the way they were presented or appeared to the public. Yet PBS, as an enterprise, didn't have anything to do with them.

A sudden outbreak of domestic terror threats

Fri Sep 25, 2:35 pm ET

An extended period of relatively little news about domestic terrorist threats was shattered this week. A spate of arrests and reports of fearsome plots have Americans back on edge and struggling to make sense of the suspects and continuous headlines. Below, the recent developments:

Top 10 Americans for monetary reform: #8: W.J. Bryan: 3-time Dem. Presidential candidate

The financial crisis in America today could be over almost instantaneously through monetary reform. Monetary reform is a fundamental shift in how America creates money. The shift is from a Robber Baron-era design of banks creating credit to lend to us at interest and ever-increasing debt, to our community (government) creating it for the direct payment of public goods and services. The benefits of monetary reform are conservatively $1 TRILLION every year, the end of the national debt, and full employment.

NEW YORK — A city task force on medical problems linked to the collapse of the World Trade Center says tens of thousands of New Yorkers have sought treatment or enrolled in a health monitoring program.

The annual report by the World Trade Center Medical Working Group was released Thursday. The report says nearly 16,000 people have sought out care at publicly funded programs for people with illnesses potentially related to the attacks.

Another 42,000 rescue, recovery and clean up workers were in monitoring programs.

But the report also found that there are people who aren't taking advantage of available medical services, including thousands of people suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.

Yet another 9/11 widow calls for new investigation

Interview with 9/11 family member Jane Pollicino, who lost her husband Steve Pollicino.

Jane courageously speaks out in favor of a proper investigation into her husband's murder, spurred by the NYC CAN petition drive. She was one of the 50+ volunteers who helped prove that enough voters legally signed the historic petition.

On the 27th of September, join NYC CAN and thousands of New Yorkers as they converge on the streets of the City to demand an impartial investigation into the events of Sept. 11, 2001. Jane is the reason why so many of us actively pursue Justice and Accountability.
