Letters: Bush failed to act on pre-9/11 warnings - The Sheboygan Press

The latest assertion by the Bush administration is that if they had had the wire-tap capabilities before 9/11 that they've recently been exposed of using (i.e. illegal), they could very well have prevented the terrorist attacks. As one recent writer to The Sheboygan Press expressed, thousands of our fellow Americans would have been spared.

This current lie manufactured by Bush and Co. would be hilarious if not so tragic. The non-partisan 9/11 Commission published the facts surrounding the weeks and months leading up to the attacks on 9/11.

Those of you who still cling to the belief that George Bush is a great leader should really invest some time reading the facts.

Fact: On Aug. 6, 2001, George Bush received his daily presidential brief with the heading "Bin Laden determined to strike inside U.S." It went on to warn that members of al-Qaida, some living in the U.S., were planning possible attacks within the country. It also included a report by the FBI of suspicious activity including preparations for hijackings and surveillance of federal buildings in New York City.

During the summer of 2001, FBI field offices in Phoenix and Minneapolis alerted the government of suspected terrorists attending flight schools in the U.S. A Minneapolis agent tried to warn the White House that Zacarias Moussaoui might "take control of a plane and fly it into the World Trade Center." How specific is that?

Why did the president ignore these warnings? Did he simply choose not to read the information that he was handed? That would be hard to believe.

Did he read the information and not understand it? Did he read and comprehend this information, and then choose to ignore it? That would be criminal.

We'll never really know, because the truth will never come from him.

One thing is certain, however. The president of the United States, George W. Bush, had the information, the power and the resources to prevent 9/11, and he failed miserably.

Thousands of our fellow Americans would have been spared if he had done his job.
