David Griffin has a great treatment of the historical Jesus in the context of the Roman imperial rule in Palestine (in 9/11 and Christian Faith). Those who turn Jesus into somekind of magical superhero just don't understand his message, in part because of the 2000 years of distortion introduced by organized churches that he never sanctioned or called for.
