BBC Newsnight: Yahoo caught providing information against Bloggers in China

Imagine a knock on the door after you have been on the internet, blogging, and the next moment you are under arrest. Not the latest BBC drama - but a real life one. Amnesty International today (27th October 2006) launched a campaign in defence of internet bloggers in many countries - including China, Tunisia and Iran who have been arrested for expressing views which have upset their governments.

But how have they been tracked down? It turns out that they have been turned in by major internet providers such as Yahoo and Microsoft, who have supplied foreign governments with the information they need to pursue them. We'll be asking these companies whether they believe in free speech.

when you embed a video throw

when you embed a video throw a [div align="center"] before it and a [/div] behind it (replace the square brackets with less/greater than signs).. this will align it to the center.. just be sure to preview it to make sure it works.

Ok man cool, I honestly

Ok man cool, I honestly didn’t know about that, so you mean like;

/div align="center"/ (embed code) /div

?

Anyway I was actually about to ask if we can bang this on the front page? I grabbed it off the Newsnight site after watching the report yesterday, I did some quick editing on it to get the clip and upped it to youtube. This is so relevant to everything we're doing right now because it shows just how little integrity those fat cat corporate service providers really have, and how if we don't make our voices heard on the censorship issue now eventually sites like this one will be just totally phased out by "internet 2" and all the other bullsh!it their trying to pull.

Stop corporations from helping governments persecute people!

"...But how have they been tracked down? It turns out that they have been turned in by major internet providers such as Yahoo and Microsoft, who have supplied foreign governments with the information they need to pursue them. We'll be asking these companies whether they believe in free speech..."

While asking said companies whether they believe in free speech, tell them that they are aiding & abetting the Chinese gov't in persecuting people!!! Yahoo, Microsoft, and any other corporations that engage in espionage for dictatorships, need to be boycotted & have other more severe taken against them!

AAAGH -- what are the alternatives?

Seriously. I'd like to know what people are doing in practical terms in order to boycott Yahoo and Google. Microsoft I have more of a handle on, although not a very satisfactory one.

What can you (one) do?

Well, I am done with Yahoo and Google. But.... does anybody know of suitable non-CIA-Government-Fascist-Neocon related search engines that are trustworthy?

"There are none so hoplessly enslaved as those who falsely believe they are free" (Goethe)..... a paraphrase from V: Cast aside the illusions. Only when you are finally hopeless can you truly be free.
