Is War With Iran Inevitable?

If 9/11 was designed to herald in a broader agenda of American hegemony, it stands to reason that Iran remains on a very short list of targets.

I early bloggered here: http://911blogger.com/node/4214 that Debka was reporting a buildup of carrier groups in the region. There was some debate as to whether Debka is a reliable source (which I agree - it is speculative at best) – but there is some circumstantial evidence indicating that the build-up is indeed occurring – including a story I found that ran in the Navy Times – as well as this recent and startling story that Iran took photos of one such carrier group utilizing spy planes:

http://www.iranian.ws/iran_news/publish/article_18867.shtml

And now Debka is reporting this:

USS Boxer Strike Group, entered the Persian Gulf Thursday, Nov. 9, the largest US landing force to reach this water in a decade

The Boxer Expeditionary Strike Group (BOXESG) now in the US Fifth Fleet area headquartered in Bahrain, consists of Boxer (picture), Amphibious Squadron 5, the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit (Seals), the Coast Guard cutter Midgett and
Canadian frigate HMCS Ottawa, as well as the USS Dubuque, USS Comstock, the largest landing craft in the US Navy, USS Bunker Hill and the guided missile destroyers USS Benfold and USS Howard.
The Boxer Group has just come from joint maneuvers with the Indian navy in the Arabian Sea opposite the coast of Goa, including large-scale landing practices. The group’s commander, Capt. David Angood said that if “anything important happens in the real-world environment, the task force will deal with it in the most efficient manner.”
DEBKAfile’s military sources report that the arrival of Boxer in the Persian Gulf coincided with the USS Iwo Jima Expeditionary Strike Group’s passage through the Suez Canal on its way from the Gulf to the Mediterranean. It is the first time that a US naval strike force is accompanied by a coast guard unit. Its vessels are equipped and their crews trained for rapid rescue and aid missions to damaged ships and wounded crewmen. Their presence in the task force indicates that the Boxer strike group is prepared for Iranian attack by sea, air, submarine, sea-to-sea missiles or depth mines.

(end of story)

Could a military strike against Iran be in the works? What would the ramifications of such a strike be for the region and the world?

I agree

with Ruppert's assessment of the ramifications. i am not so sure i agree that the Bush and Israel would not do it.

i wonder if the recent political losses for the neo-cons in congress make an attack more or less likely?

a nice world crisis could be all the neo-cons need to deflect attention away from the coming criminal investigations against them.

I thought...

Criminal investigations against them were "off the table?"

i doubt that very much

look - there is always a honeymoon period where both parties vow to play nice and cooperate (for the good of the nation) in the spirit of bi-partisanship.

it is all bullcrap. i predict that this president will be investigated heavily. there is just no way that the democrats are going to give this president a free pass after the abuse they took over the last 6 years.

we may not get a 9/11 investigation - but there is a virtual smorgasbord of issues that they can (and will) attack.

(in my opinion)

We...

Shall see... now that Rummy is no longer on the payroll, he is open to being sued (as he is, etc...). Maybe that will open up a can o' worms.

I am going to guess

that they will attempt to nail Bush on illegal wiretapping, which i bet will end up revealing that he targeted members of the press and his political opposition - including peaceful anti-war protestors.

or they could nail him on the illegal prison system and the murder by torture that took place in them - in violation of the Geneva conventions and international law.

or they could go after him on the faulty pre-war intelligence showing he knowingly misrepresented the facts to the public.

and the list goes on and on. civil liberties. presidential signing statements. hurricane katrina.

But...

The Democrats are just as guilty in regards to several of the things you mentioned. That's why I think impeachment is "off the table."

i am no apologist for the democrats

definitely not

BUT - i do not think you can compare the crimes of this administration to the general corruption of the democrats.

i just do not see that the democrats are "just as guilty" regarding wiretapping and secret prisons and - geez - 9/11.

the neo-cons took corruption to a whole new level. they made a power grab that is unparalleled in contemporary US history. they attempted to obliterate the opposition while consolidating power under their "unitary executive" theory - which is of course a fancy way of saying "one party dictatorship"

i remember the democrats being forced to hold hearings in the basement of the capital building to explore the "fixed the intelligence around the policy" memo.

so you not think the democrats feel burned over this?

please note that anthrax was sent to democrats who opposed the Patriot Act. Please note that Wellstone died in a very suspicious set of circumstances.

the democrats - with all their flaws and corruption and hypocracy still represent a consortium of different interest groups - gays - minorities - environmentalists - etc etc...... who all have a vested interest in dismantling the republican political steamroller.

i do not blame you for being cynical. i do not have much hope myself that the democrats will save america. but - lets also keep this in perspective and remember what monsters the neo-cons are. they took this country to the very edge - and i think that even corrupt democrats can understand that.

John...

They gave them the 2000 election without making a stink. They gave them the Iraq War. They gave them the Patriot Act, the Patriot Act II, the Military Commissions Act, etc... they have fully endorsed, WITHOUT QUESTION the 9/11 Report... the list goes on and on... I understand where you're coming from... maybe I am just too synical.

well.....

...not totally....

the supreme court gave them the 2000 election.

but i do believe that the democrats in congress rolled over. i agree with you 100%. its kinda like they were forced to line up with the newest mafia boss. its just business.

but - the mafia boss is now seen as bad for business. the mafia boss has lost all his friends. the evangelicals and GOP middle class and military establishment and the intelligence establishments - even the Neo-Cons themselves - are ALL fleeing this president like rats fleeing a sinking ship.

so - just like the mafia - when a "boss" loses favor within his own ranks - he becomes vulnerable. i do not see who is left to protect him from the competing "family" - the competing business interests - the democrats.

and - just like the mafia - they will indeed go after him - simply because they CAN. its just business - and highly predicable.

this president has shamed himself. he is a laughing stock. the republicans may have even LIHOP'd the election -allowed themselves to lose on purpose - just to get away from the stink of this failed presidency and failed congress. those that remain are turning their backs on him.

you expect the democrats to play nice? we may see a meltdown of epic proportions. we may see the first criminal indictments of a sitting president.

or - maybe i should just cut down on caffeine.

Do you know...

How many times I've said, "They've got him now?" If I had a penny for every time I've said that, I'd probably have around $2.30.

Let's say we make that $2.31 right now. The Democrats now have the power to hold the Executive Branch accountable for “high crimes and misdemeanors." Or, to put it a different way, "they've got him now."

I hope I don't get to $2.32. I don't have much confidence in that though.

The bottom line is, this is a good song.

War with Iran must be avoided at all costs, IMO!

How long are we going to allow Bush to rampage accross the Middle East just like Hitler did through Europe???
