Patrick Leahy – 9.11 Truth’s Best Chance for Justice?

Is there any hope that Congress will reopen 9.11 for investigation? Many of us have been wondering this since the historic election results of early November handing Democrats a majority in both houses of Congress.

Many of us are rightfully jaded. The democrats in many respects have been complicit in the cover-up of many of the most important facts and questions associated with that day.

But, we should not entirely give up hope. The political tides are changing, and there is perhaps one glimmer of hope that we should all consider actionable.

In October of 2001 Senator Patrick Leahy was one of two democrats targeted in the Anthrax attacks (which was later verified to have originated in US military bio-weapons labs). These attacks helped to usher in the Patriot Act which Leahy had opposed.

According to Paul Thompson’s timeline:

"On October 4, Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman and future anthrax target Patrick Leahy (D) accuses the Bush administration of reneging on an agreement on the anti-terrorist bill. Leahy is in a key position to block or slow the bill."

And then in late September 2006 Senator Patrick Leahy posed the following questions:

“The two questions that the congress will not ask, because republicans wont allow it, is why did 9/11 happen on George Bush's watch when he had clear warnings that it was going to happen? Why did they allow it to happen? And secondly, when they had Osama Bin Laden cornered why didnt they get him?”

And then most recently, the following was reported here:

He related a conversation where he was recently asked if President Bush should be "worried" that he (Leahy) was now to be Chair of the powerful Senate Judiciary Committee. The crowd started cheering.

"No, no" he said, calming the crowd, as if to be prepared for a softening of his rhetoric.

"No, he shouldn't be worried. He should be terrified."

Could this be more than mere rhetoric?

I would invite each of you to contact Patrick Leahy and voice your demands that the Senate Judiciary Committee reopen 9/11 for Congressional criminal investigation.

I would like to start this letter by congratulating you on the resounding victory the democrats enjoyed in the midterm elections of 2006. The American public has presented the Democrats with a mandate for change, and it is my sincere hope that this opportunity will not be squandered.

It is for this reason that I would like to petition your office, as Chair of the powerful Senate Judiciary Committee, to follow up on a verbal pledge you made to ask the difficult questions associated with the events of September 11, 2001.

Specifically, you stated in September of 2006:

“The two questions that the congress will not ask, because republicans wont allow it, is why did 9/11 happen on George Bush's watch when he had clear warnings that it was going to happen? Why did they allow it to happen? And secondly, when they had Osama Bin Laden cornered why didn’t they get him?”

But, the questions do not stop there. On August 12, 2006 the Washington Post reported that the 9/11 Commissioners themselves considered filing criminal charges with the Justice Department against NORAD, for knowingly providing them with false information regarding our failed air defenses on that day.

Yet, the 9/11 Commission Report was allowed to go forward, under the leadership of Executive Director Phillip Zelikow, with these known inaccuracies included. Zelikow, as you know, headed up George W. Bush’s presidential transition team in 2000-2001, and co-authored a book with Condoleeza Rice. Hardly an unbiased and independent Executive Director.

According to a New York Times/CBS News poll,

Polls clearly indicate that the American public is unwilling to accept or believe only partial answers to these questions. The implications of this are staggering.

It is for this reason that I would like to petition your office to reopen 9/11 for congressional criminal investigations under your leadership. I believe it is of vital interest to the people of Vermont, and the Republic itself, that the American public be provided with full accountability and transparency on the issue of 9/11.
