Letters to Left Gatekeepers
We should send letters to news outlets’ op-ed writers.
We should especially contact the so-called Left Gatekeepers, who have fallen into the lazy trap of not looking at evidence.
Below I provide a copy of a letter that I sent to Matt Taibbi who writes for Rolling Stone. Remember? He has written two pieces ridiculing the 9-11 Truth movement. But otherwise he seems like a nice and clear-thinking fellow.
I suggest that we start sending letters like this very regularly, to all news outlets and to any and all journalists who might read and respond. Repeat letters saying the same thing would be fine, in my opinion. The more the better, I say.
Notice that my goal in this email below is to help the fellow do his job. Such people want leads to good stories. Notice too the complete lack of thrusting accusation. I think that makes it more likely he will see the message and consider it.
If you too decide to follow suit, copy this verbatim if you like, or write your own -- or alter mine in any way you’d care to. I plan to send similar messages to Jarrett Murphy of Village Voice, Terry Allen of the Independent Media Institute, and Matthew Rothschild of the Progressive.
__________________________________________
Dear Matt Taibbi,
I like your writing, and follow it regularly. I am sending this in the long aftermath since your piece entitled The Idiocy Behind the '9/11 Truth' Movement.
Have you had occasion to revisit your thoughts about 9/11 conspiracies? There are so many interesting leads out there now. In my opinion the ‘idiots’ and their ‘idiocy’ are passé at this point, with new leads appearing from several directions.
For one thing, it is no longer just about the towers. Lots of other facts are popping up in news stories.
For example, look at this one tidbit, regarding Daniel Pearl: The man who is on trial for allegedly killing him is the same person who wired $100,000 to Mohamed Atta, on orders of the Pakistani ISI chief Lt. General Mahmoud Ahmad.
His name is Omar Saeed Sheikh. He has strong links to the Pakistani ISI. When he was exposed as the "money man" behind 9-11 by the FBI, the head of Pakistani intelligence resigned immediately, on October 9 of 2001.
The CIA and the ISI have worked together at least since the Mujahadeen operation in the 1980s, reportedly the largest and most expensive operation in CIA history.
General Mahmoud Ahmad was in Washington, D.C. on the morning of 9-11-01, having breakfast with top government officials, including the then chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, Bob Graham.
All of these facts have appeared in ordinary news outlets, submitted by beat writers and not by 9-11 conspiracy buffs. No one even disputes these facts. Shouldn’t you and/or others in similar positions follow these leads?
Many more leads keep popping up in related areas, involving NORAD, war games on 9/11, what Rudi Giuliani did and said on that day and subsequently, obvious cover-ups, the physics of WTC 7’s remarkable collapse, and so much more. Why is no one looking into these?
More generally, where is the Left these days? Where are the watchdogs? What are you folks watching? This is huge. The whole story remains basically untouched, whether in today’s left-leaning media, right-leaning, or center.
P.S.: Each of the following four web addresses provides abundant untapped leads for investigative journalists. For simplicity I am selecting only a few out of many possible:

Letter Writing Works
I agree with this Student's blog and think we should also take the easy step of getting on our local high school's, or the high school we graduated from's, website and spread some information around to the math, science, etc departments and any teachers there that have email addresses available.
I did this to my local high school and found that many teachers provide their email address under their department website. All easily accessible.
This makes sense.
Many people in our movement seem to be educators like Dr. David Ray Griffin and Barrett and Steven Jones etc, so I figure go with what works and try to get these people talking in our local high schools.
Hope this excites you and provides you with a cool way to spend a half hour or so. I send a short letter with quotes, images, and links to videos.

Talk to you later.

I think we are getting too caught up with "leftist gatekeepers"
Anyone is entitled to think and say what they want to think. Some of the people in these comments sound like crazed ideologues - they are one step away from suggesting we "kill all the scum bag leftist gatekeepers". Why? Because some of these writers give the 9/11 truth Movement FREE PUBLICITY? (all publicity is good publicity...especially when it comes to investigating 9/11). Just relax about it. The people who should be targeted with letters and complaints are the mainstream sources who say NOTHING about 9/11. ALL PUBLICITY IS GOOD PUBLICITY. Stop freaking out about LGs. My God.
PS: this comment was not
PS: this comment was not directed to orangutan or anyone in particular. I just noticed a lot of time being put into discussing LGs recently and want to say something about it.
These are good ideas, Orangutan...
The more letters, the better. Schools are a great idea. How about college newspapers? But I still say, do also write to op--ed writers. They want material. Letters help them see what people want to read.
sorry, but I disagree strenuously
Writing to Matt Taibbi is akin to writing to Bush about this. Do you really think he doesn't know the score? It is his JOB to ridicule the truth movement and to prevent people who already dislike Bush from disliking him 100 times more. Let me repeat--this is his JOB. He is not honestly mistaken--he makes comments that he must know to be false. For heaven's sake, his last column compared 9/11 to OK City saying that the official version of THAT was also true. Oh my GOD. Anyone who has seen the news reports from that day knows that he was lying when he said that the reports could be dismissed as inaccurate because the events were unfolding. No, Matt Taibbi is not worth writing to. He IS worth writing about, especially in comments on his various gatekeeping pieces.

Contacting People.
Whoever we should and shouldn't contact is besides the main point. We should be contacting whoever we want to as often as we want until our hankering for a new investigation gets resolved. True?
If some want to contact Matt Taibbi, teachers, or MSM contacts or Michael Moore. The more power to them. We just need to keep the focus on contacting the people who have not yet heard of or seen the evidence in this disaster.
Religous Leaders should be contacted.
Representatives in the House and Senate.
Investigative print and other journalists
High School Professors
Friends and Family
Childhood Friends
Neighbors.
ETc ETc.
No need to get all critical on who we contact, but helpful support on leading us to the most influential is a good idea in my opinion. I think the best motive would be to concentrate on one person en masse to contact like Wolf Blitzer, Anderson Cooper, Henry Waxman, or Patrick Leahy. Concentrated efforts although harder to achieve make a good difference too.
Regardless...
Peace and good blog Student!!

Some just take the easy road
I disagree. I think you're investing too much intention in their actions. Saying it's Taibbi's "job" to reject our understanding of 9/11 is denying too many other, more reasonable possibilities. It's like suggesting there's a massive conspiracy involving everyone in the mainstream media. In reality, rejecting 9/11 truth is just the easy position to take, especially if you're someone like Taibbi and probably eager to establish your "place" in the progressive community. You look around and see Chomsky and his ilk rejecting 9/11 skepticism, and so you figure that's the agreeable posture if you want to fit in with these people.
It doesn't help that there are so many fringe ideas surrounding 9/11. Some gatekeepers just don't want to be associated in any way with anti-Semites or space beam enthusiasts. If the gatekeepers had more integrity as scholars and activists, they would try to position themselves in such a way that they could demand another investigation of 9/11 while simultaneously distancing themselves from the lunatic fringe.
I don't think Taibbi is "owned". I think he's either misinformed, or just afraid to stand alone among his peers. Either way, yes, he should be opposed, but let's not ascribe more structure to leftist denial than we can prove.
Thanks for your thoughts.
Thanks for your thoughts.
Just looking at Taibbi's photos at the Rolling Stone website, and reading some of his other pieces, I get the feeling he is an ordinary person. And Rolling Stone? Are they on the Bush payroll?
Taibbi's might just be an OK sort, but just not informed on this topic. Anyway, demonizing people doesn't seem to get anywhere. I thought, why not try a more positive route?
The other point is, we have been subjected to terrorism -- by our own government, evidently. Some of these op-ed folks might well be frightened. Wouldn't you be?
For that matter, maybe I should not have mentioned Daniel Pearl. You get my point? Let's try to help them out. Demonizing them won't do that.
I don't want to make excuses
I don't want to make excuses for people who are indirectly complicit with a fascist government, but I do think some of these people are just afraid to speak out because they know, being in the public eye, that there are lunatics out there who are willing to hurt public figures. Maybe we need to create an atmosphere in which the lunatic fringe has less power, and as a result more progressives will see the light on 9/11.
no one has any reason to believe that anyone in the truth...
movement is likely to harm them quite the opposite. Where do you get this about the lunatic fringe having too much power or influence? Who do you mean exactly? The lunatic fringe in this country are the neocons and they have been given breathing space by the complicit corporate media. As truthers we have no need to make excuses for ourselves to so-called progressives. They if anything owe us big time for carrying the torch of real p0rogressivism while they wallow in fake reality thinking they are not actually part of the problem.

I agree that the neocons are
I agree that the neocons are part of the lunatic fringe. My point was not make excuses for progressives who do not agree with us, but rather to suggest that there are reasons other than "gatekeeper" complicity that might explain why these people do not endorse our cause. At the level of individual psychology, there are a host of reasons why someone might not agree with us, and not all of them have to do with an assessment of the facts or being bought off.
agreed 100%
I think you're absolutely right Sim. I just think that Taibbi falls neatly into the consciously deceptive category of gatekeeper. I think you're right to point out that different people operate under different rationales. However vitriolic I may seem on this site at times, I know very well that everyone is different and that one on one or even when speaking to groups one must use a different approach based on what can be reasonably assumed about one's audience. Heck, with some people I even just leave it at planting a LIHOP seed because that may be the only way to nudge them down the otherwise slippery slope of truth awakening, whereas if we push some people too hard they will dig in their heels and be determined to believe even harder in the "safe" manufactured reality.
My point with the gatekeepers is that in many cases they are as blatant a conspirator as any, and that one's time is wasted on some of them for obvious reasons. Since I presume that most people reading and posting here are hardcore truthers who are not going to be affected by another truther's approach I don't always use the softest language--I should perhaps work on that. In any case, your replies have been very helpful for clearing up our meaning and for that you'll get a point from me!

I think what many of us are expressing is simply the recognition that time is short. Loose Change, however flawed, has done the work of rallying from below; but without mainstream leadership from above (and soon), this movement cannot produce the result it desires.
glad to stimulate discussion...
We can certainly agree to disagree on this point. I don't know how long you've been truthing or where you lie on the "spectrum of truth", so without assuming anything about what you believe or don't, let me just say how I see it. Rolling Stone may not be on the Bush payroll, but it's not like 9/11 was Bush's baby. The magazine seems to be owned by an individual as to whose politics and personal connections one can only guess. Taibbi's father, though, is a TV journalist for NBC, owned by General Electric, a military contractor and propaganda outlet.
None of that means as much as the fact that Taibbi is on the attack. He is not frightened into doing that, nor is Chomsky frightened into discouraging people from taking the 9/11 issue seriously. People who are frightened are usually silent on issues, not eager attack dogs (unless of course they are being blackmailed into writing invective against something they don't actually disagree with--no I seriously doubt that is the case.)
The reason we focus on left-gatekeepers, or why I do anyway, is because they play a crucial role in social control. they take those who are most likely to agitate for change and they make sure that they channel their energies into dead ends. I've seen this happen firsthand in the anti-war movement that has been more than a failure, and more than influenced by the likes of Chomsky and Taibbi.
A man like Taibbi who is labelled an investigative reporter, who took over HUNTER THOMPSON's RS column after his death, is not simply uninformed on a topic like 9/11. That makes no sense to me. Why would he write what he does, complete with insults, if he knew he didn't really understand the issue? And if he does feel that he understands the issue, he is either the worst "liberal" investigative journalist in history or he simply finds it more lucrative to write what he does knowing full well he is not doing it honestly.
See his bio on Wikipedia and tell me this guy does not have AGENT written all over him. Look at where he's lived and what he has supposed to have been doing there. Put that together with his pervasive and blatantly deceitful 9/11 denial and you have yourself a very obvious case of intentional skullduggery. You don't have to agree, but that's the way I see it and people like that deserve no breaks and will not be "discovering their error" ever.

Reply to Real Truther
Real Truther mentions that "Taibbi's father, though, is a TV journalist for NBC..."
I hadn't known that. Thanks for the tidbit and it does look relevant.
If I had time I would try to get into each of these people's mind-set before writing them. Every one of them has a point of view and a reason for writing what they write. In this fellow's case I would bet that he follows his dad's views. Plus, he has to write pieces that his boss likes, and will avoid writing anything that his boss disapproves of.
I still say it is worth it to send our stuff around, even to people like Taibbi -- and as you said, you and I can agree to disagree on that point.
Regarding these "left gatekeepers,' I just suspect that one or two at least, and maybe more, will take a new look at it all. Some of them have just been lazy, or timid, or both. Or maybe they've just been naive, rather than intentionally trying to dampen or block continued investigation.
diversity of tactics versus unified front
With the exception of my feelings on this target in particular (Taibbi) I agree wholeheartedly with your approach. In this I am supportive of a diversity of tactics--good cop bad cop if you will, where some of us write very encouraging and supportive suggestions, and others, as we are more naturally prone to perhaps, write warnings of what awaits people who conspire, wittingly or not, with this treason and crimes against humanity.
See, it's perfectly natural given what we know to be angry and not to hide that. It is also important that we maintain a civil discourse in the forefront. And that we make absolutely clear that we are the proponents of TRUE law and order with real freedom, and that those who have made a mockery of those most important American principles are the perpetrators of 9/11 and their defenders, apologists, and yes, co-conspirators.
It is not disruptive to point out that there will be consequences for treason or acts of war (overt or covert) against the American people and the world. I am at once an American AND a human being--I represent both in my work to expose the corruption and crimes of the ruling elite. We have much good in AMerica to protect and defend, and much bad that we MUST be unwavering in opposing, since it does not reflect the ideals that we aspire to and have not always, as Americans, lived up to. Until the media monopoly is busted and we have a real and free system of communication and information in this country (for once, or again if in fact we ever did) we cannot afford to be too sympathetic to the agents of that corrupt monopoly.

Daniel Pearl
I've been interested in Danny Pearl for quite some time now and haven't found much good information about him. The only thing I know is that he probably died because he was tracking and finding the links between the 9/11 "highjackers" and the Pakistani ISI. Could someone, maybe you Student, email me directly or post on this thread where I could find more information about the death and surrounding events of Daniel Pearl. Otherwise I've just been waiting for the Angelina Jolie movie about him to come out :) Thanks.

Staged just like Nick Berg's beheading. Think Hollywood special effects. The whole story of how he went looking for an interview with some mad terrorist and OOPS! was double-crossed and lost his head is pure baloney, in my opinion.

More on that
Orangutan, sorry to take so long to reply...
This link discusses 9-11 and Daniel Pearl:
http://www.globalresearch.ca/articles/KUP312B.html
It also convinces me, for my part, to stop looking at the intricacies of this mess. Focus on the obvious.
Exactly! People like Matt Taibbi, O'Reilly, Hannity & Colmes,
Glenn Beck, etc., clearly have an agenda of promoting disinformation. IMO, the are CIA agents or assets, as Operation Mockingbird revealed: http://www.whatreallyhappened.com/RANCHO/POLITICS/MOCK/mockingbird.html
Emailing media, legislators, etc. IS NOT SPAM
ps: (Excellent suggestions from Student et al. I hadn't thought of getting high school email addresses. I did recently harvest about one hundred faculty addresses from a small college in my state (the entire faculty practically); and another hundred from the social studies dept. of Univ. of Washington: political science, sociology and law/criminal justice, etc. )
{{{{ Below is a current sample of a compilation I send to media and legislators and other "opinion makers" etc. I'm placing it here and at other forums, comment places, etc. in the hope that some who have the time
and inclination will do something similar. (Hopefully a lot of people are ALREADY doing something like this.)
I recommend people consider sending their own unique compilations, on a regular, updated basis, to as many legislators (state and/or federal), and media as they can handle.
I am able to send to a list of around 1500 approximately once a week. One of the easiest ways to accumulate such a list is by using congress.org . Their government lists are easy to find and use. Their media lists are also extensive, and can be found far down the left side index. One can concentrate on one's own state, or go nationwide.
Once one gets one's list(s) into one's address book and one's message in draft, the mailing, while time-consuming (especially with dial-up), is "automatic pilot," allowing one to keep up on Air America or
whatever.}}}}

TO: media persons, political organizations, prison reform movement, freelance journalists, churches, etc.
In 1971 Angela Davis wrote the following from her jail cell in Marin County, California:
"It should be self-evident that the frame-up becomes a powerful weapon within the spectrum of prison repression, particularly because of the availability of informers, the broken prisoners who will do anything for a price."
Thirty-five years later there is still a vast gulf between what "should be self-evident," and what citizens ACTUALLY KNOW about the frame-ups against litigators, journalists, whistle-blowers, political and social activists, etc., which continue unabated and uninvestigated.
What is the cause of this gulf? How can those who are concerned with upholding the rule of law and improving prison conditions build a bridge across this gulf of ignorance?
Only the light of knowledge and understanding can drive out the darkness of ignorance.
This case presents a perfect opportunity to focus the cleansing light of public exposure on the RAMPANT LAWLESSNESS within too many Departments of Corrections bureaucracies....

[The writer of this review focuses on the lethal CAREERISM of the Neo-cons and Neo-liberals; but the craven careerist hacks embeded in some of the most influential "progressive" media are at least as dangerous to our democracy:
David Corn of The Nation magazine, for instance, is currently RUNNING AN AD on Air America Radio frantically urging us to leave off questioning the Bush regime's account of 9/11 (even though scientific polls clearly show that only SIXTEEN PERCENT of Americans accept that account!), and to banish impeachment from our thoughts!
Some of the others who are advancing their careers by helping the Neo-cons and the Neo-libs to squelch questioning and investigation of their crimes:
Alexander Cockburn of counterpunch@counterpunch.com , Ed Schultz of ed@edschultzshow.com , The Young Turks of theyounturk@yahoo.com .
Then there is the new "democratic" site http://www.buzzflash.net which with great fanfare advertises that its readers can vote on its articles for importance and relevance -- but anything having to do with 9/11 or anything the least bit critical of the Israeli government is instantly deleted from the site! Karl Rove could learn from these people.
And we must not forget to include in this list of treachery the grand old man of Manufacturing Consent himself: Noam Chomsky, diligently manufacturing cover-up for the most dangerous regime in US history!]
From: LONDON REVIEW OF BOOKS
Vol. 29 No. 1 dated 4 January 2007
Dragon-Slayers
by Corey Robin
"....Many people believe that great crimes come from terrible ideas: Marxism, racism and Islamic fundamentalism gave us the Gulag, Auschwitz and 9/11. It was the singular achievement of [Hannah Arendt's book] EICHMANN IN JERUSALEM, however, to remind us that the worst atrocities often arise from the simplest of vices. And few vices, in Arendt's mind, were more vicious than careerism. 'The East is a career,' Disraeli wrote. And so was the Holocaust, according to Arendt. 'What for Eichmann was a job, with its daily routine, its ups and downs, was for the Jews quite literally the end of the world.' Genocide, she insisted, is work. If it is to be done, people must be hired and paid; if it is to be done well, they must be supervised and promoted.
"Eichmann was a careerist of the first order. He had 'no motives at all', Arendt insisted, 'except for an extraordinary diligence in looking out for his personal advancement'. He joined the Nazis because he saw in them an opportunity to 'start from scratch and still make a career', and 'what he fervently believed in up to the end was success.' Late in the war, as Nazi leaders brooded in Berlin over their impending fate and that of Germany, Eichmann was fretting over superiors' refusing to invite him to lunch. Years later, he had no memory of the Wannsee ['final solution'] Conference, but clearly remembered bowling with senior officials in Slovakia.
"....Most modern theorists, from Montesquieu to the American Framers to Hayek, have considered ambition and careerism to be checks against, rather than conduits of, oppression and tyranny....
"The main reason for the contemporary evasion of Arendt's critique of careerism, however, is that addressing it would force a confrontation with the dominant ethos of our time. In an era when capitalism is assumed to be not only efficient but also a source of freedom, the careerist seems like the agent of an easy-going tolerance and pluralism. Unlike the ideologue, whose great sin is to think too much and want too much from politics, the careerist is a genial caretaker of himself. He prefers the marketplace to the corridors of state power. He is realistic and pragmatic, not utopian or fanatic. That careerism may be as lethal as idealism, that ambition is an adjunct of barbarism, that some of the worst crimes are the result of ordinary vices rather than extraordinary ideas: these are the implications of EICHMANN IN JERUSALEM that neo-cons and neoliberals alike find too troubling to acknowledge."

In the former Soviet Union, the monopoly media acted as cheerleader for a brutal, repressive government. Dissident academics were silenced, fired, or institutionalized.
For two or three years after 9/11, our media served as a megaphone for Bush administration lies, and academics were intimidated into silence....
....The excuse that my position is marginal no longer holds, given that only 16 percent of the American people believe the government is telling the truth about 9/11 (New York Times poll) and 36 percent of Americans, and half of New Yorkers, believe top US officials conspired to commit mass murder and high treason on 9/11 (Scripps-Howard and Zogby polls).
It is long past time for a rational, evidence-based debate on the facts and meaning of 9/11. Any takers?

Conspiracy
I have been hearing more and more references to Conspiracy lately.... from the Ford eulogy..... to local radio shows....
but last night took the prize.
On Michael Savage national radio show there was an expert from the FBI who has specialized in the politics and society of the Middle East for over 25 years.
He as a FBI agent deals with the disection of conspiracies.... it is his job as is many FBI agents to see conspiracies before they happen... his own words.... he spoke about how if our government were to pull off an attack in order to steal more of our freedoms or try to take more control over us... then they would have obviously done it prior to the last election...
Well I can tell you many reasons why he's wrong..... if there had been an attack prior to the elections it would not have helped the Republicans a bit.... It would have simply highlighted their failures to prevent these attacks... Also the Republicans would rather stage an attack while the Democrats had power... after they do their best to make the President powerless.... then if there were an attack they could thus blame the Dems for not allowing the President to do all he could.
Thie main goal of the Republicans is to get into the White House... and another attack on the Democrats watch could help make that happen while opening the flood gates for the Democrats to do their part.... taking guns and so on...
but back to the "Expert" on Conspiracies....... this is good!
He said..... "The only way for a conspiracy to happen is if the conspiracy is committed by one person because any conspiracy involving more than one person would most likely be compromised by one of the conspirators leaking the whole thing."
I am still shaking my head..... should we define conspiracy for the conspiracy expert?...... ONE PERSON????? LOL
This is their talking point that they are pushing around.... all the people that would have been involved.... and how it would have been leaked by someone.
Expert?????
I want a leak so bad now..... we need to be able to protect these people.... we need to guarantee their safety..... they are not safe now.
if hey come out... who can they tell?.... the police?...the FBI?... The MSM?
WHO?
One Person!
A footnote to your comment
Hey, JJJames, your post makes it seem as though Democrats are far different from Republicans in terms of this 9-11 event, and/or some new event like it later.
If so, why are the Dems so compliant about this? The event reeks of official complicity. But all Democrats in office have, like Republicans, remained silent about it.
Why is this so?
Some letters to Counterpunch & The Nation
I've written to both Counterpunch and The Nation on the subject of their poor coverage of 9/11 Truth.
