A 9/11 Gov’t Conspiracy? ‘I Wouldn’t Be Surprised,’ Says Tikkun Editor

The Jewish Daily Forward has an article on Rabbi Michael Lerner and his contribution to David Ray Griffin's recent collection:

A 9/11 Gov’t Conspiracy? ‘I Wouldn’t Be Surprised,’ Says Tikkun Editor

Rabbi Michael Lerner, the longtime activist and editor of Tikkun magazine, has published an essay saying he is open to the possibility that the American government may have been behind the September 11 terrorist attacks.

“I would not be surprised to learn that some branch of our government conspired either actively to promote or passively to allow the attack on 9/11,” Lerner wrote in an essay published in the new book, “9/11 and American Empire: Christians, Jews, and Muslims Speak Out.” Lerner added that he would also not be surprised if it turned out that the attacks were not the result of a government conspiracy.

“I am agnostic on the question of what happened on 9/11,” he wrote in his essay for the book, which includes articles by other contributors arguing that a government conspiracy was behind the September 11 attacks. “As other authors in this collection have shown, there are huge holes in the official story and contradictions that suggest that we do not know the whole story.”

The article mentions that Griffin has a piece in the March issue of Tikkun, which I would say is a positive step toward fuller left-wing engagement with 9/11 Truth. Along with Griffin's forthcoming book, Debunking 9/11 Debunking, these efforts should begin to chip away at the knee-jerk disbelief of many progressives.

Let me pre-empt the inevitable troll-a-thon over Lerner's comments at the end of the article, where he disavows the possibility of any Israeli involvement in 9/11. I'm NOT posting this article for the purpose of more speculation over Israeli involvement in 9/11, or anti-semitism and 9/11. You may disagree with Lerner: That's fine. Don't pollute this post with your rants.

The point I want to make is that Lerner's article, and DRG's in Tikkun, are positive steps toward breaking down the resistance of Left Gatekeepers.

Very positive steps...

and I am enheartened to hear about this. Obviously, I have to buy another two books.

Just a view: And I most especially do not want there to be any rants. I do, however, want to say that considering Mossad may have been involved is no different from saying MI6 may have been involved. Saying the latter is no attack on the British people (many of whom feel similarly to us). Saying the former, unfortunately, is either expressed in an anti-semitic tone (note the pragmatics of language) or is automatically taken as anti-semitic by the reader.... or, at the least, is viewed as potentially undermining the 9/11 truth message. Because others will use anti-semitism as a weapon - regardless of what might have been said - to attack the 9/11 truth movement. It is used quite consistently in that fashion. This doesn't answer the question of how and whether to broach these issues. But it does quite clearly imply that those who rant about Israel, the Jews or express any other bigoted epithet against any people are quite clearly disinfo shills, meaning to derail a discussion or to smear a movement. This process is no surprise to most posters here; knowing well the history of Op. Mockingbird, most assume disinfo folks are prevalent across the movement and web as a whole. and willing to derail the movement in any way they can. Balanced and thoughtful discussion is critical.

I edited to add, that upon reading the article I still say this is a positive step. While he expresses, and almost overemphasizes his ambivalence, he also endorses the movement with various statements and more essentially by endorsing the publication (he's in it). This cannot but help to encourage others to investigate. At least, this is my first thought.
