I'm reposting this in light of George Monbiot's attack on the 9/11 truth movement based claims that Bush is too incompetent to have carried out 9/11.

Remember how TV character Detective Columbo pretended he was bumbling and dumb, so that people would underestimate him?

In his recent article, well-known liberal writer William Pitt says "the 'incompetence' thing is nonsense . . . Can anyone still think this was all by accident?" In this article, Pitt recognizes that Bush and his administration are not as incompetent as they seem; that in fact, they have gotten exactly what they wanted all along.

Indeed, the neocons have openly advocated civil war in Iraq and other Middle Eastern countries as a strategic plan.

Pitt, and the neocons, are speaking about Iraq. But their reasoning applies equally well to 9/11.

When faced with evidence that elements of our own government orchestrated the 9/11 attacks, millions of Democrats smugly respond that the Bush administration was too incompetent to have done it. A common statement is "They're too incompetent to even win a war against a bunch of poorly-armed people; how could they have pulled off 9/11?"

Bush certainly acts like a bumbler and a good old boy. Cheney accidentally shot his hunting buddy. And Rumsfeld apparently mangled the planning of the war in Iraq. Right?

Not so fast. Are Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld really that incompetent?

Let's take a look at their history. After Bush lost his bid for congress because he was perceived as an over-educated, "spoiled rich kid from back East", he cultivated a bumbling, "good old boy" image, and then started winning his political elections. Bush actually cultivated a bumbling, misspeaking mannerism.

Moreover, President Bush proposed painting a U.S. surveillance plane in the colors of the United Nations in hopes of drawing fire from Iraqi military, as a way to justify war against Iraq. Is this the kind of proposal that someone who is incompetent would make, or is it the kind of thing a conscious deceiver would suggest?

Rumsfeld and Cheney are also experienced experts at deception to justify their military and political goals; see also this article. These guys, like other neocons, are students of Machiavelli.

The problem is that Democrats, when faced with destructive policy decisions by Republicans, grasp for an easy explanation; and incompetence fits the bill. Indeed, I would argue that most Democrats -- when faced with the inconceivable harm which the neocons and their allies are doing to America and the world -- react with the comforting thought "at least I'm alot smarter than those bozos". Its human nature: putting the other guy down makes us feel better.

But this very human reaction causes us to ignore the actual situation: these folks are evil. I don't mean evil in a religious sense, necessarily. Instead, in this essay, I'm referring to evil in the secular sense that the neocons are so calculating and so set on empire, consolidation of power, oil and bucket loads of cash, that the killing of 3,000 Americans is "justified" in their minds.

I haven't read any psychological studies from Nazi Germany, but I would imagine that Hitler's opponents reacted in a similar way: "boy is HE a moron -- I'll be glad when he loses the next election!", thus failing to realize what a bad guy Hitler really was and the fact that Hitler wasn't about to stand for any challenge to his power.

All one has to do is review the real history of terror to understand what high-ranking government officials are capable of.

Once you've read that, come back and tell me why you still think 9/11 occurred because of Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld's "incompetence".

See this article and this letter also. Still think the neocons are just a bunch of incompetent bafoons?

Yes, Bush is an idiot

Yes, Bush is an idiot.

Not even Oscar Wilde could feign, on the spot, so many malapropisms. Yet Bush's handlers are far from stupid. Cheney, Wolfowitz, Perle. Evil yes. Dumb no. Ted Bundy had an iQ of 150 -- not too shabby, indeed far above average. But intelligence has nothing to do with morality.

Bush is shrewd like a sewer rat -- a characteristic he inherited from his father, no doubt. Poppy was fairly bright, still is I imagine (despite his increasing dementia) but the inbreeding took its toll with Dubya. Junior is spoiled, sociopathic and yes, imbecilic, but his intelligence or lack thereof has nothing to do with 911.

I'll never forget Jon Stewart claiming -- during the initial bombing of Iraq -- that Dubya had a "good heart". There's liberalism for ya. A good heart that executed women and the mentally ill while guv. Yep, that's what passes for character nowadays.

The "master in chief" is no such thing. He's a puppet and we all know it. As such, this debate is largely irrelevant -- at least, it should be.

Partisans democrats, like their republican brethren, will grasp at anything to discredit their political opponents -- so long as is stays within the realm of "respectable" discourse. War games and WTC7 are anything but respectable.

What people fail to realize about the neocons is that they have achieved just about everything they wanted -- up to this point. Will we let them continue?

An excellent issue is raised in this piece, one which I have raised myself many, many times, to little or no avail: Iraq is not a "failure".

There's a reason those two SAS agents were caught dressed up as Muslims with a trunk full o' bombs. "Strategy of Tension". Divide and Conquer. Warlords have done it throughout history. It's so obvious I'm amazed people still find it surprising. When the natives get restless, turn them against one another.

Why does Cheney keep insisting that the war is going not only well but in fact swimmingly?

Because from his vantage point -- IT IS.

Rummy was token; he's still lurking around MT. Weather as he has been since the late 1970's.

The goal of the Neocons is not "democracy in the middle east", sweethearts; rather it is to divide the entire, big, fat, oil-spilling swell into murderous, warring tribes: all the better to swallow you, my dear.

See those teeth?

I mean really: "Al-Qaeda in iraq"? Lord give me strength.

Here's Oded Yinon:

"Iraq, rich in oil on the one hand and internally torn on the other, is guaranteed as a candidate for Israel's targets. Its dissolution is even more important for us than that of Syria. Iraq is stronger than Syria. In the short run it is Iraqi power which constitutes the greatest threat to Israel. An Iraqi-Iranian war will tear Iraq apart and cause its downfall at home even before it is able to organize a struggle on a wide front against us. Every kind of inter-Arab confrontation will assist us in the short run and will shorten the way to the more important aim of breaking up Iraq into denominations as in Syria and in Lebanon. In Iraq, a division into provinces along ethnic/religious lines as in Syria during Ottoman times is possible. So, three (or more) states will exist around the three major cities: Basra, Baghdad and Mosul, and Shi'ite areas in the south will separate from the Sunni and Kurdish north. It is possible that the present Iranian-Iraqi confrontation will deepen this polarization.15

The entire Arabian peninsula is a natural candidate for dissolution due to internal and external pressures, and the matter is inevitable especially in Saudi Arabia. Regardless of whether its economic might based on oil remains intact or whether it is diminished in the long run, the internal rifts and breakdowns are a clear and natural development in light of the present political structure."16

That was written decades ago. The Rand corporation has repeatedly argued along similar lines, as indeed any ruling class think tank would.

It's long past time we stopped pretending the neocons are "incompetent". Bush yes, neocons no. 911 was apparently blundered in many ways, otherwise we wouldn't be here, but these bastards have done their homework.

As Kissinger once said of Rummy, "he's the most ruthless man I've ever know". High praise indeed.

Wolfowitz, during his stay at the White House, had a picture on his wall of the bloodiest day of the civil war.

They were willing to make a "sacrifice", so long as it wasn't themselves, and they've had nothing but success ever since.

The 911 truth movement is here to put a stop to all this bullshit. There will be no "hundred year war". The truth will out, and these men will find themselves under a noose. Mark my words.

The Eleventh Day of Every Month

YES, incompetence theory is as bad as coincidence theory!

I remember getting the incompetence theory before getting banned from Traitor Kos' site. They loved it because they could have it every which way they wanted it. Bush's incompetence was to blame for 9/11--and to prove it they would point to the "failures" in Iraq and New Orleans.

Yes, the plan all along has been to create a new reality by f*cking things up so badly for the people in the middle east that they would flock to the madrasses to join the western directed "terrorist" movements.

Put a whole bunch of our kids in a snake pit surrounded by hornets nests, then let the dobermans out and watch the fun. Oh yeah, make sure they go in without proper equipment or a plan. From this scenario pick a few heroes like Jessica Lynch and Pat Tillman, except change their stories so that tragedy becomes heroism.

As you sexually humiliate your muslim captives and spread the photos online throughout the muslim world, keep using the weapons of mass destruction, depleted uranium and white phosphorus, that you falsely claimed your enemy had. All the while turn a blind eye to the relentless settlement of Palestinian land by Israelis, because if all else fails at riling muslims to suicide bomb themselves in the foot it is a long and slow wet kiss in public between Israel and the US. We are not your problem, your problem is our problem. The Palestinians are your problem.

As Americans grow sickened and divided by the atrocities, by the hopeless situation, and by the lies they are fed when they can stomach no more trash entertainment, scare them with false bomb threats that you orchestrate by arming witless thugs. Remind them that we are at war for noble purposes and fighting an enemy that drinks the blood of little American and Israeli children. Accuse any who downplay the evil of our enemies as wishing the extinction of all Jews and freedom loving Americans.

With us or against us. David Duke or Alan Dershowitz--it's a free country after all. Pick one.

Yes this is an evil plan quite competently carried out since 9/11/01. That was the day that changed everything, that made this all possible. A point of no return--who in theri right mind would argue against the troops in favor of proving the innocence of violent extremists? As someone aksed me once--why demand the truth? They WANT to take credit! Yes, it's so easy! The story is adequate, the swarthy brown people are clearly and unambiguously evil, the good guys are rich white men who land on aircraft carriers. AND you get to vote for your favorite Idol!! All for the low low price of a gallon of gas!

The neocons are not Israeli, nor are they Americans. Yet they straddle the two countries, with Britain a royal jackass hauling supplies, as they test the patience of their own masters, the global elite, who have themselves become so corrupt and decadent that they are now no less than a glorified mafia, far from the nobility they fancy for themselves but that no amount of gold or monopoly money or oil or drugs has been able to secure for them.

And now, thanks to the insane schemes of the lunatic fringe of the elite, these relatively young neocon turks, these wild-eyed fanatics who thought 9/11 would be their coup, they are caught between a fire and a frying pan. The longer they wait before accepting the inevitable, the harder their fall will be.

Do you hear that rumbling in the distance, steadily gaining strength? If it sounds unfamiliar, it's because what's coming down is like nothing you've ever seen. No amount of trash TV or infotainment or sanitized high school history can do justice to the reality finally, mercifully descending like a cleansing flood on our collective consciousness.

Be proud, truthers, and be relentless!

We can't be stopped.

sad state of the left

Bush's retardation has served the neocons in ways even the most insanely brilliant politicos could not have predicted or guided. I think the Left's initial obsession with Bush's idiocy was a way of coping with the Left's own impotence in the face of the Bush administration's manipulations.

To think of the hundreds of thousands of government employees as all just extensions of their dry-drunk figurehead is the definition of absurd. There are malignant forces working within the broader exoskeleton of the US government, and one must never conflate the full scope and power of these forces with the banal stupidity of their mascot.

Bush = Most Skilled Politician Ever

It all depends on your perspective. If you see his goal as helping the country, then yes he is incompetent. But if his goal is to reap the profits for him and his cronies by running the US into the ground, then I argue that no single administration has done it better in the history of America.

Clinton couldn't get away with a blowjob! Nixon couldn't get away with wiretaps! But Bush&co get away with unjustified wars, WMD lie, Katrina, wholesale wiretapping, halliburton, torture, stolen elections etc.. etc.. You gotta give it to them. It's an monumental feat.

Bush, the moron figurehead, is the best political act ever. All his 'mistakes' are seen as mere incompetence. I mean who has anything to fear from a retarded kid? Nothing. He didn't mean any of it, right?
