Research team receive threats after releasing 9/11 simulation

The research team behind a scientifically rendered 3-D animation of the Sept. 11 attack on the World Trade Center is beginning to experience the effects of its 2 1/2 year project – not all of which is positive.

The animation, which depicts the crash of American Airlines Flight 11 into the North Tower, was placed on Purdue's Department of Computer Science Web site in early April and has since garnered nationwide media attention from CNN.com and NBC news.

"It is not easy to see the tragedy in such vivid detail," said Christoph Hoffmann, a computer science professor and a lead researcher for the project. "But (the animation) has generated a lot of debate, which is positive."

But, as the team has since found, there is a darker side to success.

The animation drew the attention of conspiracy theorists across the Internet who have taken it upon themselves to target not only the animation but the team behind it. By seeking to prove links between the researchers and the United States government, the theorists hope to find a slant of bias in what was promoted as independent research.

Mete Sozen, professor of structural engineering, said this was not the reaction he was expecting.

"Most of the feedback was negative and threatening," Sozen said.

Sozen said this may be due to a misconception on the part of the viewer.

"They think the animation explains the collapse," Sozen said. "Actually it explains how the structure withstood the impact. The fire brought the building down. But that happened after our coverage."

Despite some hostile feedback, the animation's popularity continues to grow.

The video proved so popular that the team had to upload the video onto YouTube to prevent it from hindering the speed of the department's Web site. On YouTube, the video received more than 2,000 views in only the first hour of its June 1 posting.

"We put the video on YouTube because the great number of downloads that slowed down the computer science Internet servers," Hoffmann said. "The YouTube servers have the adequate capacity."

With more than one million views, the video shows that people are still hungry for answers and, for that reason, the team's research will continue.

"The next step is to understand what happens when dense fluids impact solids," Sozen said. "It will help us to understand the response of structures to such elements."

Until then, Hoffmann is unfazed by the media attention.

"I am just happy to help people understand our work," Hoffmann said.

"The fire brought the building down."

Really? Fire? Is Christoph Hoffmann going to simulate that too?

That Purdue simulation is CIA/NSA-funded propaganda! That's

why people are upset with them.

Mete Sozen

"Mete Sozen, professor of structural engineering, said this was not the reaction he was expecting."

I find this incredibly hard to believe considering that the simulation of the Pentagon crash created by Mete Sozen's team received the same type of criticism back in 2002. Watch "9/11: The Conspiracy Files" to actually hear Mete Sozen himself (I assume it was him) talking about the problem his team had over this issue.

Received threats?

"Most of the feedback was negative and threatening," Sozen said.

That's all Sozen said. Without further basis, the headline is a lie.

I imagine he received some messages saying he should be arrested and tried for complicity in crimes against humanity, and saw that as threatening. The headline implies physical threats, but that seems unlikely and is not what he said.

Yeah, then there's freefall.

lets assume...

-NORAD didnt exist : OK
-Each Impact erradicated 6 floors, including 6 floors worth of core, like magic, so now theres an empty space: OK
-Top sections of towers began to fall immediately thru empty 6 floor space: OK...

And the collapse proceeded, increasing in speed (@ 32.2 ft/sec/sec), all the way to the ground, at freefall speed, resistence free, how exactly?

Please simulate this, so I can understand how the laws of physics were violated. If we can harness these powers that defy physics we could make a lot of money, and probably rule the world.

I eagerly await their simulation and/or response!!

Physics/Science/Mathematics do not lie, only people do.
9/11 was an INSIDE JOB

The video is a cartoon. It

The video is a cartoon. It has zero argumentative value as it just rehashes old falsehoods. It was a waste of money and has little to do with real science, but if it gets people thinking seriously about 9/11, that's good.

JFK on secrecy and the press

He doesn't sound too confident

"They think the animation explains the collapse," Sozen said. "Actually it explains how the structure withstood the impact. The fire brought the building down. But that happened after our coverage."

I'd say that comment is one for our side. Sozen is distancing himself from the collapse mechanism.

If they were threatened, all

If they were threatened, all I have to say is that it's a disgrace. Threatening and abusing people does absolutely nothing to help the 9/11 Truth Movement - on the contrary, it only serves to hurt us, even if the simulation is rubbish.

C'mon...it's bullsh*t intended to damage 911T!!

It really sounds like a preemptive effort designed to defuse the inevitable right wing violent response to the 911 Truth movement, when we start getting too close.

"Tricks and treachery are the practice of fools, that don't have brains enough to be honest." - Benjamin Franklin

Or, they really were

Or, they really were threatened. Maybe they are lying about it, but I wouldn't be surprised if they did receive threats by some of the dunces who are nothing more than parasites on the Movement.

I agree

We are better than them. In fact, 9/11 truth has made me practically abhor lying as it is clear that it has contributed to horrible situation the country is in right now. Thus, making threats is even worse.

The following suggests that the Purdue crew did indeed create the simulation from data that was GIVEN to them:

I am friends and colleagues with many of the people who worked on this project. I can tell you that the simulation was not doctored or altered from the original data to show anything contrary. However, I cannot say anything about the integrity of the original data that they were given...
As for conspiracy theories, I would like to see simulations run on many of the popular theories out there (actually a missile, cargo plane full of explosives, rigged building) and see how they compare with the Purdue simulation results.
It should also be noted that the "most likely" scenario has no bearing on this, because even the most improbable scenario has to be true given the information we have gathered. Of course, multiple scenarios can have the same result...we might never know the way it really happened from a structural standpoint.

FYI...

I've been accused of slander for posting that Mete Sozen is a liar, that the results of the simulation are biased, and that other members of the simulation team have lied to media about the design intent of the World Trade Center. Geographicaly, I'm very close to Purdue so they might take deeper offense since my comments appeared in the state's largest newspaper website under every column on the subject.

I doubt that the claims will be pursued, but if so, I'd love to see them take legal action. It'd be an opportunity to place much of the research by 9/11 Scholars and others on the public record in a court of law.
