US Politics blog "The Politico" covers Ron Paul's terror warning

Ron Paul warns of staged terror attack

By Dan Reilly
July 13, 2007

Republican presidential candidate, Rep. Ron Paul, said the country is in "great danger" of the U.S. government staging a terrorist attack or a Gulf of Tonkin style provocation, as the war in Iraq continues to deteriorate.

The Texas congressman offered no specifics nor mentioned President Bush by name, but he clearly insinuated that the administration would not be above staging an incident to revive flagging support.

"We're in danger in many ways," Paul said on the Alex Jones radio show. "The attack on our civil liberties here at home, the foreign policy that's in shambles and our obligations overseas and commitment which endangers our troops and our national defense."

Paul was asked to respond to comments by anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan that the U.S. is in danger of a staged terror attack or a provocation of an enemy similar to the Gulf of Tonkin incident in 1964 before the Vietnam War.

During the radio interview, Paul said the government was conducting "an orchestrated effort to blame the Iranians for everything that has gone wrong in Iraq."

The comments come as several prominent terrorism experts have warned the U.S. is facing an increased risk of attack this summer. Earlier this week, in an interview with the Chicago Tribune, Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said he had a "gut feeling" the U.S. would be attacked again.

The remark angered some Democrats, who criticized Chertoff for being too vague. And some pundits seized on his remarks, saying the vague warnings were meant only to revive flagging support for the war in Iraq and Bush’s larger war against terrorism.

(Speaking of politics, you know those McCain 2008 ads that pop up on occasion down on the left-hand side? They are randomly generated by the "Ads by Google" block that crawls the blog text for keywords. I wonder which keywords? "False Flag Terror" or is it "9/11 is an inside job"? Is McCain a closet Truther? I doubt it. FYI, 911blogger.com does not endorse McCain. -r.)

yes, ive asked about these

yes, ive asked about these ads numerous times but never really got an answer. you've had Newt Gingrich,McCain and Ann Coulter ads recently. so Google gets to pick what ads show up on this site? somehow that doesnt sound right.....

Ron Paul: Conspiracy Theorist
We've known for quite some time that Ron Paul is a "9/11 Truther" (or at least supported by those who are)--one who believes that 9/11 was done with the knowledge or complicity of the Bush administration. Now he's agreeing that conspiracies that have not yet happened will in fact come to pass:

He believes that a terror attack will be staged to allow the evil Neo-cons of the Bush administration unimpeded access to attack Iran.

OK, I've had serious issues with Ron Paul's campaign. Besides his hypocrisy on earmarks and other issues, he's pretty much been...well, sane. Now, I'm not quite sure.

Here we have a presidential candidate (sure, one who is polling at 0%) who is saying on the record that he believes the current administration is capable of faking a terror attack, which will kill people, simply to advance their ideology. That's not campaigning, that's in the realm of JFK conspiracy theorists and Heavens Gate.

Ron Paul's campaign has attracted a large Internet following, one that is boisterous and vocal (watch the comments to this post), but to think that they could defend this is preposterous and downright scary. The thought of the Ron Paul Brigades in tin hats is, of course, amusing though.

3. I'll give you every cent i have if you can give me one, just one concrete source for Ron Paul saying anything along the lines of the Bush Administration having anything to do with 9/11/01.

Seriously, all these lame attempts at hit pieces are getting really old. Really old. Why not try to argue against anything that he has said. Oh, that's right, cause if you do you'll end up looking foolish because the man speaks more sense than any other candidate in either party.

6. I guess you think is wrong for all of these U.S. Military officials to question the Bush Administration's actions and the 9/11 Commission Report?

I'm glad

I'm glad this is getting some exposure.
Maybe boobus Americans will actually look up the Gulf of Tonkin and learn for the first freaking time what this country is capable of.
How many of our soldiers DIED because of that 'incident'? Yeah, the U.S. would NEVER DO SOMETHING LIKE THAT AGAIN.

I've learned not to worry about Dr. Paul. He can handle himself when this matter gets thrown in his face.

When I saw him discuss the theory of blowback at the debates, I figured he had HAD it and his campaign was over. Boy was I wrong.

This is nothing. And, for Christ's sake, it's 100% likely that we'd either invent a situation or provoke a situation with Iran.
America needs to hear it so when it happens we'll have a statesman that said "I told you so"...

Go Ron Paul...

If anyone's interested, Ron Paul was on the Pat Gorman show back in June where he gave a rather detailed answer regarding 9/11.

Among other things, he questions Bldg 7.

I Hope Ron Paul Is Wrong

Although the US has a history of staging or allowing events to take place in order to rally the citizenry to war, I hope this will not be the Bush solution to military defeat in Iraq and the likely GOP political defeat at home. We all know about what happened at Fort Sumter, the sinking of the battleship Maine prior to the Spanish American War, World War One, Pearl Harbor, Vietnam and the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution and the latest Iraq War miscalulation or intelligence failure.

Still in a real or contrived terrorist attack, the economic damage to the economy, the lives lost and the damge could pale in comparison to the impact of an over reaction by the government to such an attack.

Bush like Hitler, says first

Bush like Hitler, says first Muslim in Congress

America's first Muslim congressman has provoked outrage by apparently comparing President George W Bush to Adolf Hitler and hinting that he might have been responsible for the September 11 attacks.

Addressing a gathering of atheists in his home state of Minnesota, Keith Ellison, a Democrat, compared the 9/11 atrocities to the destruction of the Reichstag, the German parliament, in 1933. This was probably burned down by the Nazis in order to justify Hitler's later seizure of emergency powers.
