The Raw Story covers Roberts' appearance on the Hartmann show

Old-line Republican warns 'something's in the works' to trigger a police state

Thom Hartmann began his program on Thursday by reading from a new Executive Order which allows the government to seize the assets of anyone who interferes with its Iraq policies.

He then introduced old-line conservative Paul Craig Roberts -- a former Assistant Secretary of the Treasury under Reagan who has recently become known for his strong opposition to the Bush administration and the Iraq War -- by quoting the "strong words" which open Roberts' latest column: "Unless Congress immediately impeaches Bush and Cheney, a year from now the US could be a dictatorial police state at war with Iran."

"I don't actually think they're very strong," said Roberts of his words. "I get a lot of flak that they're understated and the situation is worse than I say. ... When Bush exercises this authority [under the new Executive Order] ... there's no check to it. It doesn't have to be ratified by Congress. The people who bear the brunt of these dictatorial police state actions have no recourse to the judiciary. So it really is a form of total, absolute, one-man rule. ... The American people don't really understand the danger that they face."

Roberts said that because of Bush's unpopularity, the Republicans face a total wipeout in 2008, and this may be why "the Democrats have not brought a halt to Bush's follies or the war, because they expect his unpopular policies to provide them with a landslide victory in next year's election."

However, Roberts emphasized, "the problem with this reasoning is that it assumes that Cheney and Rove and the Republicans are ignorant of these facts, or it assumes that they are content for the Republican Party to be destroyed after Bush has his fling." Roberts believes instead that Cheney and Rove intend to use a renewal of the War on Terror to rally the American people around the Republican Party. "Something's in the works," he said, adding that the Executive Orders need to create a police state are already in place.

"The administration figures themselves and prominent Republican propagandists ... are preparing us for another 9/11 event or series of events," Roberts continued. "Chertoff has predicted them. ... The National Intelligence Estimate is saying that al Qaeda has regrouped. ... You have to count on the fact that if al Qaeda's not going to do it, it's going to be orchestrated. ... The Republicans are praying for another 9/11."

Hartmann asked what we as the people can do if impeachment isn't about to happen. "If enough people were suspicious and alert, it would be harder for the administration to get away with it," Roberts replied. However, he added, "I don't think these wake-up calls are likely to be effective," pointing out the dominance of the mainstream media.

"Americans think their danger is terrorists," said Roberts. "They don't understand the terrorists cannot take away habeas corpus, the Bill of Rights, the Constitution. ... The terrorists are not anything like the threat that we face to the Bill of Rights and the Constitution from our own government in the name of fighting terrorism. Americans just aren't able to perceive that."

Roberts pointed out that it's old-line Republicans like himself, former Reagan associate deputy attorney general Bruce Fein, and Pat Buchanan who are the diehards in warning of the danger. "It's so obvious to people like us who have long been associated in the corridors of power," he said. "There's no belief in the people or anything like that. They have agendas. The people are in the way. The Constitution is in the way. ... Americans need to comprehend and look at how ruthless Cheney is. ... A person like that would do anything."

Roberts final suggestion was that, in the absence of a massive popular outcry, "the only constraints on what's going to happen will come from the federal bureaucracy and perhaps the military. They may have had enough. They may not go along with it."

Would someone have the time to post this PCR follow-up to DailyKos?

KOS banned me for

KOS banned me for respectfully posting about 911.
And I had paid a lifetime subscription. So I told them I thought they should give it back. They gave me part of it back. Said it was "pro rated."

Beside our "9/11 was an

Beside our "9/11 was an inside job", "Investigate 9/11" and others banners, we need a massive warning banners. Something along the line "Don't believe the next terror attacks" ..........

This is a really good idea. The whole point in exposing 9/11 is to make sure the public doesn't fall for it again. We need a meme that gets right to the point.

Sorry for the double post... was the new system, not me ;-) !! (poor W impression)

Heard Roberts on Hartmann Thurs. morn---

this is a cross-post from Raw Story, where it got no response in the middle of the night~~

Heard Roberts on Hartmann this morn, and tried to get through to inquire about possible context for a False Flag incident. I am in Portland, Thom's hometown, and we are facing 2 terrorism drills in August and October.

The NORAD and FAA stand-downs facilitated the self-inflicted terrorism of 911, orchestrated by Dick Cheney, so I see these drills as good cover for BushCo to put into effect exactly the scenario that P. Craig Roberts discussed and later wrote about today.

I wrote Roberts to ask the question I wanted to ask on air, but time ran out. Below are a few paragraphs (more because I split some up) about how Portland hopes to gird against Bush Terrorism.

It is a long story, but I eventually talked with the Mayor's spokesman, who used the term "terrorism drill", vs. the "emergency preparedness" that I had heard from the City Council staffer, and he confirmed that Portland is being paid $2 million for its participation in Top Off, which is a 10-day drill in October.

We have seen the militarization of the local police in the past year, and also that they seem just chomping at the bit for the ultimate Cowboys and Indians routine, with their kevlar vests, tasers, mace, bean bag shotguns, etc. Will $2 million buy Portland real security, perhaps, ala Blackwater?! Will it pay for the test-run of Bush's police-state, compensating those in-the-know, the "players" for suppressing dissent among Portlanders who realize that the drill is a pretext for martial law?!

I wanted to inquire of your thoughts on the likelihood that a FF event would be guised in this manner, like the NORAD/FAA blinders of war games/exercises, on 9-11.

I also wanted to ask for your input about the best way for us to respond - to hopefully demand a postponement or cancellation of the exercise, or at least complete transparency in the negotiations and preparations, in the form of a citizens' oversight committee, with some sort of veto power if things seems amiss.

I am an activist in town on issues like impeachment, the anti-war movement, 911 Truth, election protection, ...just to firm up the credentials. I certainly hope that I am overreacting and that the drills are innocuous, but DHS is a fraudulent construct, designed by a fraudulent Administration, to commit fraud on America! I don't think now is the time to allow this sort of experimentation on the people of "Little Beirut", especially given that we know how vengeful Bush is, and he got a pretty chilly greeting here in 2002/3, as I have been told.

Any thoughts people?

Have other cities repelled DHS in situations like this?

I will monitor responses, and perhaps there is a way we can communicate off-board, if you are willing to share strategic advice.

Thanks, S

Breaking through on Daily Kos

Right now there is a front page diary on the recommend list at Daily Kos that puts this issue front and center. It is not getting banned, and it has over 300 responses, most of them positive. Granted, the author seems more concerned with a 9/11-type attack triggered by a Tonkin-Gulf type incident with Iran, but he does mention the term false-flag terrorism.

Just posted 2 hrs ago asking how the DKos rubes were reacting~~

I wonder what the rubes at DailyKos are saying now re the 911 conspiracy theorists...ya Brzezinski, Buchanan, Paul C. Roberts?!?!

Just perused, and they are talking about anything but Roberts' prognostication!! Very sad, and I was amused that some posts that I have put up mocking their 911 Truth Denial mindset stayed up...

Here is a fun one...

Your conformism is pitiful... (0 / 0)

..."violates the rules of the community"...I should "know better"..."risk my 'membership' here"?!?!?! You sound like a scared little kid!! I took a gander at your user history, and what did I see, but someone who spends hours on this site, rather than fighting the good fight.

It is not a conspiracy theory, is a bunch of facts that outline a conspiracy. Why would you believe anything, especially of the magnitude of the Official Lie, the Bushitti Crime Family says?

Answer me that, and I don't give a hoot about the rules of this site...there are plenty of others where such groupthink conformism doesn't compel denial of consideration of fact-based analyses.

REVOLUTION is in the air!!

I think you are mistaken

This post has received over 630 comments, and has remained on the recommended list for hours.

Note that my remark is pre-new Kos posting...

...I was saying that I was just wondering how the DKos crowd was dealing with the PCR and other pieces on false flag incidents.

I am intrigued that Kos is tolerating such "CT" discussion...had to happen sometime.

[new] what a mirror (0 / 0)
Even as I write these words I feel like a wild-eyed nutcase.
A year and a half ago when we concluded certain (ahem, clears throat) things about what was going on in government, particularly with black ops, we felt so alone.

I am one of those people who bites the tongue about the FAQ. I knocked off a lot of diaries at Markos' orders, not because I had penned any theories but because I asked verbotten questions. I anguished about choosing between the rotten perils of abandoning DKos due to purist issues vs. keeping mouth shut in order to be a part of developing community consciousness and voice. We chose the latter (my husband is a big part of this writing process although he "lurks" instead of writing), because I felt if DKos never caught on to what is happening, I couldn't see another informed and journalistically responsible body of thought developing in the US which could match it. I took it on the chops a lot with tinfoil epithets, although got a lot of support too.

We grieved, prayed.

We sat back, reasoning through all we saw, all we were learning, all that was exhumed, tracing the dark, bloody threads back to Iran/Contra and before... saying well, if they would do this, then why would they not do that? And if they want that, why would they not also want this? Those kind of tormented sequences of realizations.

And we dug, and dug, and dug. I would read the most far-out conspiracy websites, then google around to see if any credible sources verified claims (there are a lot of absurd claims). And I think a year ago I sounded unstable as water in a hurricane. I sounded just like your fear:

I feel like a wild-eyed nutcase.
Now I am seeing myself in you. Yes it is terra incognita, to even think these things about a government we once trusted, let alone finding oneself unable to brush credence aside in such things as the hair-raising Roberts article. This is a grieving process.

Just for the record (and I sound like a broken record) we still have an Iran/Contra insider who worked financial fraud for the FAM, who had to testify before Kerry's committee, who survived to write a memoir and write a weekly column on the premise of financial advice... who was saying all this about the Patriot Act two years ago. The man is familiar with finance law, with the history of Stalin (from whose laws he says some of the Patriot Act comes verbatim, only translated from Russian to English). His health is failing him at times, and the writing from one week to the next is sometimes inconsistent. But so many of the witnesses to Iran/Contra "died" or "committed suicide" and so forth that we should be glad one of the original people is around to give tips. Infallible, no, and yes Martin is kind of a dark persona at times but who would be among those involved in criminal government activities? There is a backlog of two years' worth of articles on the website available to subscribers, which chronicles the development of the Patriot Act(s) through Martin's eyes. Dismiss this source if you will, but at your peril imo.

I don't envy you at this stage of the process. You are in shock. It's only that we've been grieving about loss of government integrity for so long now that at least we don't lie around like the sick. But you have my condolences.

Pretty heavy coming from a Kossack.
