History Commons Project, Update for Week Ending December 1, 2007

Several new entries have been added to the History Commons, in particular the Decision to Invade Iraq and 9/11 projects.

New entries to the 9/11 Timeline focus on a number of topics. On the Day of 9/11, air defense staff were absent from the command center because they were meeting visiting business leaders, and the two planes that hit the WTC almost crashed into each other at one point. Other entries follow on from last week's claim by al-Qaeda Luai Sakra that Nawaf Alhazmi flew one of the hijacked planes by looking more closely at his pilot-related activities. Finally, Saudi Arabian security advisor Prince Bandar Bandar Bush recently said Saudi authorities were following most of the 9/11 hijackers with precision before the attacks.

Recent additions to the Decision to Invade Iraq Timeline focus on the story of the Prague Connection“ an alleged meeting between 9/11 hijacker Mohamed Atta and an Iraqi agent in Prague and how it turned out to be false. Other additions look at a militant camp that, even though it was said to be producing poisons, was not bombed by the US before the 2003 invasion it appears it was needed as a justification for the war, even though it was in an area not controlled by Saddam Hussein's forces.

One of the new entries in the Confrontation with Iran Timeline shows that in August 2003 Donald Rumsfeld issued guidelines saying all contacts with Iranian dissidents, including Manucher Ghorbanifar, should go through Douglas Feith.

The Loss of Civil Liberties timeline has new material on NSA wiretapping, including another indication that the NSA's warrantless wiretapping program began before 2001.
