If you were watching television on September 11, 2001, this is what your subconscious heard...
I've long been interested in the techniques demonstrated by Derren Brown on his "Mind Control" programs in the US (SciFi Channel) and the UK (BBC), especially when he demonstrates that by repeating words over and over again in such a way that people don't even notice you're doing it, you can put ideas into their heads that they think are their own. (I think the science-y sounding name for it is "neuro linguistic programming")
I'm sure this was behind the choice of "United" and "American" airlines (instead of TWA, Delta, Southwest, Northwest, Sun Country, Air Alaska, etc etc etc) for the 9/11 attacks. I threw together a little video to demonstrate my point, using only a couple hours of NBC footage from that morning:
No wonder everybody felt like such "united" "americans" in the days following 9/11, obediently waiting for our heroic commander-in-chief to give us our marching orders.

Very interesting . . . Good point. Delta or US Air wouldn't have cut it semantically . . . . Makes me think about (that) there are no coincidences like the ones that happened on 9/11 . . . including how most of us thought it was so ironic at first that 9/11 happened on 9/11 (911, as in "help") . . . . It's all very subliminal, or not even that subliminal!

...your insight (that they chose "United" "American" on purpose for the subliminal message) is entirely plausible, now that you mention it,....it is another "coincidence" that, when pointed out, doesn't appear to be one.....

And Derren Brown's work is Amazing. Scary how easily we are manipulated. We need tactics that can neutralize or overpower their stuff. We must win. They are smart and good at what they do. We can either try to use their own tactics against them or hit them with the opposite and try to cancel them out. I go for returning violence and lies.. with Truth and non-violence. Gandhi and King. Man.

I believe that once people are made aware of tactics like this, it no longer works. It only has power over you if you don't consciously notice it's happening. Once you realize that the whole thing is just an excuse to say the words "terror" and "freedom", your mind is tuned to it and you notice it in all of Bush's speeches and it doesn't work anymore. Instead of feeling the emotions they want you to feel, you feel something more like intellectual curiosity or possibly resentment.

I've also thought that "UNITED Airlines" and "AMERICAN Airlines" were chosen for the reason you mention, and that September 11th (rather than, say, September 12th) was chosen because it would be abbreviated as 9/11.
