On 18 August 1999 John Gofman, a physicist on the team that developed the atomic bomb for the US during World War II, said, in response to that day’s Cassini-Earth flyby (with a record load of highly radioactive plutonium on board and at record speeds), "I'm very much in favor of the space program, but I think the use of plutonium in space is a manifestation of organized insanity."
