Today Outlook marks the anniversary of the attacks in the United States on September 11 2001. Seven years on, the gruesome task of identifying the human remains is still going on. Following the collapse of the World Trade Centre, the medical examiner's office in New York collected twenty three thousand pieces of human remains. We hear from Shiya Ribowsky, the medical examiner who led the operation.

It just occurred to me that this is a potential source of forensic evidence from the scene of the crime. I just wondered how much forensic work was done on these victims remains. If some of these people were blown up there would be some trace either in the physical evidence or in a chemical analysis.
