30,000 signatures are required to submit the petition to City Council for its approval. 45,000 signatures overrides City Council's vote, placing it on the ballot automatically. The Initiative is aiming to obtain 45,000 signatures by the end of 2008 and to obtain 100,000 signatures by the summer in 2009, placing the referendum on the ballot in the November 2009 mayoral election. Because thousands of signatures will be thrown out, it is necessary to have enormous cushion. With 100,000 the referendum is sure to get on the ballot. And one year from now every NYC voter will be aware of the referendum.
