KUCINICH CALLS FOR INDEPENDENT UNITED NATIONS INQUIRY ON GAZA

Israeli government attacks civilians in violation of international law

Washington, Dec 29 -

U.S. Congressman Dennis Kucinich today released the following statement as Israeli attacks on Gaza have gone into a third day with a pending ground invasion of Gaza by Israel:

“Today I sent a letter to Secretary General Ban ki-Moon urging the United Nations to establish an independent inquiry of Israel's war against Gaza. The attacks on civilians represent collective punishment, which is a violation of Article 33 of the Fourth Geneva Convention (http://www.unhchr.ch/html/menu3/b/92.htm). The perpetrators of attacks against Israel must also be brought to justice, but Israel cannot create a war against an entire people in order to attempt to bring to justice the few who are responsible. The Israeli leaders know better. The world community, which has been very supportive of Israel's right to security and its right to survive, also has a right to expect Israel to conduct itself in adherence to the very laws which support the survival of Israel and every other nation,” Kucinich said.

“Israel is leveling Gaza to strike at Hamas, just as they pulverized south Lebanon to strike at Hezbollah. Yet in both cases civilian populations were attacked, countless innocents killed or injured, infrastructure targeted and destroyed, and civil law enforcement negated. All this was, and is, disproportionate, indiscriminate mass violence in violation of international law. Israel is not exempt from international law and must be held accountable. It is time for the UN to not just call for a cease-fire, but for an inquiry as to Israel's actions.”

According to published news reports, since the commencement of aerial strikes, over 300 Palestinians have been killed and approximately 1,400 have been wounded. The dead include 20 children under the age of 16--nearly half of them killed while on a school bus, according to the United Nations--and 9 women. The attack aggravated a humanitarian crisis wrought by the Israeli-imposed blockade of food, fuel, and medical supplies. With a population of 1.5 million people, the Gaza Strip is among the most densely populated territories in the world.

Thanks for this post Rep.

Israel has a right to exist peacefully with secure borders like any other nation.

That includes the Palestinian People.

"But the truly sad thing is see how Obama has opted out. He left the commenting to David Axelrod, his political strategist, who said, mouse-like: "I think he (Obama) wants to get a handle on the situation so that when he becomes president on January 20 he has the advantage of all the facts and information leading up to that point." To that gobbledygook he added that now all-too-familiar nostrum that America has "one president at a time."

Unfortunately, the Christian

Unfortunately, the Christian Zionists see this kind of global response against Israel as further proof of the end times. Somewhere, there's a scriptural verse that says that all nations of the world will be against Israel. I guess what the scripture didn't mention is that the whole world is against Israel because Israel is acting like a giant, flaming a$$hole.

I am Christian

and I agree with you.

There is a difference between Chri$tian Zioni$t$ and those that understand that the Bible is meant primarily as a guide to building and molding Character.

Not an excuse for holier than thou wars of genocide or false flag events to justify wars for profit / genocide.

The Bible DOES have interesting critical points on Israel. Here is one from the Old Testament

Isaiah 1:1 The vision of Isaiah the son of Amoz, which he saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah. (KJV)

Isaiah 1:2 Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth: for the LORD hath spoken, I have nourished and brought up children, and they have rebelled against me.

Isaiah 1:3 The ox knoweth his owner, and the ass his master's crib: but Israel doth not know, my people doth not consider.

Isaiah 1:4 Ah sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, a seed of evildoers, children that are corrupters: they have forsaken the LORD, they have provoked the Holy One of Israel unto anger, they are gone away backward.

Isaiah 1:5 Why should ye be stricken any more? ye will revolt more and more: the whole head is sick, and the whole heart faint.

Isaiah 1:6 From the sole of the foot even unto the head there is no soundness in it; but wounds, and bruises, and putrifying sores: they have not been closed, neither bound up, neither mollified with ointment. ...

This is something to consider.

Also something from the New Testament.

Mat 3:1 In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea,

Mat 3:2 And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

Mat 3:3 For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.

Mat 3:4 And the same John had his raiment of camel's hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his meat was locusts and wild honey.

Mat 3:5 Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and all the region round about Jordan,

Mat 3:6 And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins.

Mat 3:7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

Mat 3:8 Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance:

Mat 3:9 And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.

Mat 3:10 And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.

My point here is not to preach to anyone but to make it clear that the Bible DOES NOT give an OPEN LICENSE for Israel to do whatever she wants and get away with it.

There are consequences for our actions. One and all. Call it Karma, Call it Reaping and Sowing....

The Scriptures are clear, and for People of the Faith, God is FAIR to everyone.

There ARE $ell out Chri$tian Zioni$ts$.

Isaiah 1 & Matthew 3 deals with that.

Gaza Boat Attacked By Israel -- McKinney Video

Watch the amazing video of McKinney on CNN here --
http://edition.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/meast/12/30/gaza.aid.boat/?iref=hpmost...

"I would call it ramming. Let's just call it as it is," McKinney said. "Our boat was rammed three times, twice in the front and one on the side. "Our mission was a peaceful mission to deliver medical supplies and our mission was thwarted by the Israelis -- the aggressiveness of the Israeli military," she said.

The incident occurred in international waters about 90 miles off Gaza. Israel controls the waters off Gaza's coast and routinely blocks ships from coming into the Palestinian territory as part of an ongoing blockade that also applies to the Israel-Gaza border. Human rights groups have expressed concern about the blockade on Gaza, which has restricted the delivery of emergency aid and fuel supplies.

Israel's Gaza assault wastes lives without changing anything
By The Daily Star

Editorial

http://www.dailystar.com.lb/article.asp?edition_id=1&article_id=98726&ca...

It is highly unlikely that anything positive will emerge from the violent rampage Israel's military launched against the Gaza Strip over the weekend. The only hope - a slim one indeed, based on past experience - is that some of the players on both sides of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict will finally learn some lessons that should have been absorbed long ago.

For the Palestinians, the crux of the matter is that the bitter feud between Hamas and Fatah has made the dream of statehood more elusive than ever. So long as Palestine's two largest parties cannot set aside their differences for the sake of its people's national aspirations, the outside world will remain largely indifferent, even when Israel comports itself with wanton disregard for innocent lives and international law. If Fatah and Hamas cannot so much as keep the peace with each other, let alone agree on compromise visions for independence and how to get there, how can they expect the outside world to entrust to either of them the myriad responsibilities of statehood? The crucial support of democratic polities in the Western world cannot be gained by organizations that display so little political maturity and probity.

For the Israelis, once they have exercised this latest spasm of gratuitous bloodletting, there will be yet another opportunity to accept the oft-proved impossibility of a military solution. The Palestinian people will not be battered into submission, no amount of air strikes will make the core issues in the moribund peace process go away, and all of the same difficult decisions will still be waiting when the dust settles. All of the broad outlines and even some of the nitty-gritty details of a durable peace have been known for years, and a very generous offer - unanimously endorsed by the Arab League and the Organization of the Islamic Conference - has been on the table since 2002.........

URGENT! Israeli Navy Attacking Civilian Mercy Ship! TAKE ACTION IMMEDIATELY!

Date : 12-30-2008

The Dignity, a Free Gaza boat on a mission of mercy to besieged Gaza, is being attacked by the Israeli Navy in international waters. The Dignity has been surrounded by at least half-a-dozen Israeli warships. They are firing live ammunition around the Dignity, and one of the warships has rammed the civilian craft causing an unknown amount of damage. Contrary to international maritime law, the Israelis are actively preventing the Dignity from approaching Gaza or finding safe haven in either Egypt or Lebanon. Instead, the Israeli navy is demanding that the Dignity return to Cyprus - despite the fact that the ship does not carry enough fuel to do so. Fortunately, no one aboard the ship has yet been seriously injured.

There are 15 civilian passengers representing 11 different countries (see below for a complete list). At approximately 5am (UST), well out in international waters, Israeli warships began surrounding the Dignity, threatening the ship. At 6:45am (UST) we were able to establish brief contact with the crew and were told that the ship had been rammed by the Israeli Navy in international waters, and that the Israelis were preventing the ship from finding safe harbor. We heard heavy gunfire in the background before all contact was lost with the Dignity.

It is urgent that you TAKE IMMEDIATE ACTION!

Free Gaza activists say they will defy Israeli blockade

Former Georgia congresswoman Cynthia McKinney is a high-profile member of a boatload of activists that set sail Monday from Cyprus to deliver medicine to war-torn Gaza.

McKinney, who ran as the Green Party candidate for president, sees the voyage as a humanitarian mission, said her father, former Georgia state Rep. Billy McKinney.

Petros Karadjias/AP

Cynthia McKinney is aboard the yacht Dignity, which set sail from Cyprus on Monday.

“Her mother did not want her to go,” he said, referring to concerns at home for her safety. “But I think that certain people have missions in life and you can’t deter them.”

The activists, organized by the Free Gaza Group, said their 66-foot yacht called “SS Dignity” would defy an Israeli blockade of Gaza and ferry 16 activists and three tons of Cypriot-donated supplies. The supplies are intended to help treat the wounded from Israeli bombings against targets in Gaza, in retaliation for rocket fire aimed at civilians in southern Israeli towns.

Israel’s aerial bombardment of the Gaza Strip continued for a third day on Monday. By Monday, the death toll rose to 364, with some 1,400 reported wounded, according to Palestinian medical officials.

McKinney had sent an e-mail days ago to friends and supporters saying she intended to go to Gaza, said Hugh Esco, a Decatur resident who ran her presidential campaign Web site.

“She has stood with people all over this planet against oppression,” said Esco.

McKinney said she will petition President-elect Barack Obama to speak out against the attacks on Gaza.

The Free Gaza group has made five deliveries of aid by boat to Gaza since August, defying a blockade imposed by Israel when Hamas won control of the territory in June 2007. Organizers say they are aware they may be stopped this time.

“I don’t know if she’ll get off the boat,” her father said. “I hope she gets back safely.”

An Israeli naval vessel has hit a small boat carrying activists trying to break the blockade of the Gaza Strip.

The Dignity was reportedly taking on water as it limped towards Lebanon on Tuesday.

The Free Gaza Movement, which organised the attempt to reach the territory with more than three tonnes of medical aid, said their boat was "rammed" and shots were fired.

The group said the Dignity was in international waters about 115km off the coast of Gaza when the incident occurred late on Monday.

Yigal Palmor, a spokesman for Israel's foreign ministry, denied there had been any shooting but said that the ships had made "physical contact".

He said that the crew of the Dignity had failed to respond to Israeli naval radio contact.

'Rammed'

Elize Ernshire, one of the activists onboard the boat, told Al Jazeera by telephone that the boat was rammed twice from the front and then once from the side.

"It has destroyed the front of the boat and the roof ... and has left the cabin, the wheelhouse quite destroyed," she said.

"We are heading towards Lebanon as the boat is not in a fit state to return to Larnaca [Cyprus] and we were threatened directly by the Israeli navy that if we continued on our course towards Gaza they would attack us again."......

The Price of Oil

Take a look - the price of oil is going up because of the situation with Israel and Hamas. I wouldn't be surprised if this were a coordinated effort. Also, Hamas always hides in the civilian population so that civilians will be hit to root them out, and hey, they do send rockets off all the time. Israel's response is over the top, too, but the bottom line is the war is great for the price of oil...........

How do we know that Hamas

How do we know that Hamas sent the first rockets. We know enough now about how every modern war is started by a false flag. I've heard enough supposed progressives say that Israel will stop if the rockets will stop. BS Who actually started them. Why would David start a war with Goliath knowing what would happen. It doesn't make sense unless it is the fact their supplies have been cut off for more than a month. But the outcome was known. Could the rockets have been sent by the dancing israelis~! The news has reported that 100 trucks were let through today by Israel with aid. Big deal. Why were they stopped in the first place.

One good thing Israel didn't count on is more dialogue is opening up and more light is shining on their fake wars.

Gaza truce broken as Israeli raid kills six Hamas gunmen

Rory McCarthy in Jerusalem
guardian.co.uk, Wednesday 5 November 2008 14.32 GMT

A four-month ceasefire between Israel and Palestinian militants in Gaza was in jeopardy today after Israeli troops killed six Hamas gunmen in a raid into the territory.

Hamas responded by firing a wave of rockets into southern Israel, although no one was injured. The violence represented the most serious break in a ceasefire agreed in mid-June, yet both sides suggested they wanted to return to atmosphere of calm.

Israeli troops crossed into the Gaza Strip late last night near the town of Deir al-Balah. The Israeli military said the target of the raid was a tunnel that they said Hamas was planning to use to capture Israeli soldiers positioned on the border fence 250m away. Four Israeli soldiers were injured in the operation, two moderately and two lightly, the military said.

One Hamas gunman was killed and Palestinians launched a volley of mortars at the Israeli military. An Israeli air strike then killed five more Hamas fighters. In response, Hamas launched 35 rockets into southern Israel, one reaching the city of Ashkelon.

"This was a pinpoint operation intended to prevent an immediate threat," the Israeli military said in a statement. "There is no intention to disrupt the ceasefire, rather the purpose of the operation was to remove an immediate and dangerous threat posted by the Hamas terror organisation.

While the Israeli/Palestinian conflict is usually framed in the most highly emotionally charged way possible, if one reads the historical accounts of the European Jewish occupation of Palestine in the 1940's and early 1950's, one will get a very clear picture of the modern roots of this conflict. This is especially true if one reads some of the excellent accounts written by Jews who participated in the ethnic cleansing of that period.

This is yet another case where a fanatical (even sociopathic) minority has seized control of a country and persistently violates international law without consequence.

This extreme corruption will only hasten Israel's demise.

The truth shall set us free. Love is the only way forward.

It was a silent war against

It was a silent war against the Palestinians. They had the right to remain silent while their supplies, fuel, medicine, food were cut off. They had the right to be strangled in silence and just take it. I just heard that on the radio.

911 Truth Ends 911 Wars

Israel has no right to exist--that land was stolen

The rage of the Palestinians must know no bounds. There will be peace in the middle east only when Israel GETS OUT and the Palestinians get their land back. Israel is an evil nation, as is their big fat stupid puppet Amerika, and this is genocide.

My heart aches for the suffering of the Palestinians.

Paul Craig Roberts has an excellent piece at: http://www.vdare.com/roberts/081228_silent.htm

Excerpt:

In 2006 the US insisted that the Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank hold free elections. When free elections were held, Hamas won. This was unacceptable to the Americans and Israelis. In the West Bank, the Americans and Israelis imposed a puppet government, but Hamas held on in Gaza. After unheeded warnings to the Gazans to rid themselves of Hamas and accept a puppet government, Israel has decided to destroy the freely elected government with violence.

Ehud Barak, who is overseeing the latest act of Israeli aggression, said in interviews addressed to the British and American publics that asking Israel to agree to a ceasefire with Hamas would be like asking the US to agree to a ceasefire with al Qaeda. The terrorism that Israel inflicts on Palestinians goes unremarked.

According to the London Times (December 28), "Britain and the United States were on a collision course with their European allies last night after refusing to call for an end to Israeli airstrikes on Hamas targets in Gaza. The wave of attacks marked a violent end to President George W. Bush's sporadic Middle East peace efforts. The White House put the blame squarely on Hamas." The British government also blamed Hamas.

For the US and UK governments, Israel can do no wrong. Israel doesn't have to stop withholding food, medicine, water, and energy, but Hamas must stop protesting by firing off rockets. In violation of international law, Israel can drive West Bank Palestinians off their lands and out of their villages and give the stolen properties to "settlers." Israel can delay Palestinians in need of emergency medical care at checkpoints until their lives ebb away. Israeli snipers can get their jollies murdering Palestinian children.

The Great Moral Anglo-Americans couldn't care less.

Well, of course

Just as there are Americans--such as you and me--who don't agree with the crimes of our evil country. But we judge a nation by its actions, and the actions of Israel are evil.

If this seems like a shocking thing to say, it is only because it has been drummed into us ad infinitum that at all costs we must not say anything against the Jews -- no matter how egregious their actions. The threat of the knee jerk charge of anti-semitism has given Israel the leeway to do great evil that few are willing to condemn in forceful enough terms.

'Both sides... blah, blah, blah"

Thanks for posting this report: "URGENT! Israeli Navy Attacking Civilian Mercy Ship!"

When is this "both sides" deferment regarding what's going on in the Middle East going to finally stop? When are we going to finally call a spade a spade? Israel is the 4th largest military power on the planet, backed up by the 1st largest (the Occupied Territories don't even register on that scale!). As this report and so many show, Israel is clearly the unparallelled criminal here! Why is this subject still "controversial?"
