The BBC Won't Play This Gaza Aid Appeal

The BBC has been joined by Sky News in their boycott of this aid appeal for the children of Gaza. But you can watch it on YouTube, as the Disasters Emergency Committee has posted the ad;

Please post it around the web, we'll just go around the Beeb.

The Arab League has put forward a request to the United Nations, calling for an investigation into Israeli war crimes in the Gaza Strip.

Permanent representatives of the Cairo-based Arab League (AL) made an appeal to the UN General Assembly on Monday to "form an international committee to investigate Israeli crimes in the Gaza Strip and to set up a criminal court to try Israeli war criminals."

On the Wrong Side by Uri Avnery

Of all the beautiful phrases in Barack Obama's inauguration speech, these are the words that stuck in my mind: "You are on the wrong side of history."

He was talking about the tyrannical regimes of the world. But we, too, should ponder these words

In the last few days I have heard a lot of declarations from Ehud Barak, Tzipi Livni, Binyamin Netanyahu, and Ehud Olmert. And every time, these eight words came back to haunt me: "You are on the wrong side of history!"

Obama was speaking as a man of the 21st century. Our leaders speak the language of the 19th century. They resemble the dinosaurs that once terrorized their neighborhood and were quite unaware of the fact that their time had already passed.

During the rousing celebrations, again and again the multicolored patchwork of the new president's family was mentioned.

All the preceding 43 presidents were white Protestants, except John Kennedy, who was a white Catholic. Thirty-eight of them were the descendants of immigrants from the British isles. Of the other five, three were of Dutch ancestry (Theodore and Franklin D. Roosevelt, as well as Martin van Buren) and two of German descent (Herbert Hoover and Dwight Eisenhower).

The face of Obama's family is quite different. The extended family includes whites and the descendants of black slaves, Africans from Kenya, Indonesians, Chinese from Canada, Christians, Muslims, and even one Jew (a converted African-American). The two first names of the president himself, Barack Hussein, are Arabic.

This is the face of the new American nation – a mixture of races, religions, countries of origin, and skin colors, an open and diverse society, all of whose members are supposed to be equal and to identify themselves with the "founding fathers." The American Barack Hussein Obama, whose father was born in a Kenyan village, can speak with pride of "George Washington, the father of our nation," of the "American Revolution" (the war of independence against the British), and hold up the example of "our ancestors," who include both the white pioneers and the black slaves who "endured the lash of the whip." That is the perception of a modern nation, multicultural and multiracial: a person joins it by acquiring citizenship, and from this moment on is the heir to all its history.

Israel is the product of the narrow nationalism of the 19th century, a nationalism that was closed and exclusive, based on race and ethnic origin, blood and earth. Israel is a "Jewish State," and a Jew is a person born Jewish or converted according to Jewish religious law (Halakha). Like Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, it is a state whose mental world is to a large extent conditioned by religion, race, and ethnic origin.

When Ehud Barak speaks about the future, he speaks the language of past centuries, in terms of brute force and brutal threats, with armies providing the solution to all problems. That was also the language of George W. Bush who last week slinked out of Washington, a language that already sounds to the Western ear like an echo from the distant past......

Lifeline for Gaza aid convoy leaving London on Saturday 14 February 2009
"Send a Valentine to Palestine"

A message from George Galloway:

Thousands of people have contacted me to say that they have marched, cried at the television pictures and feel helpless in the face of the suffering.

That’s why I have launched a major initiative in response to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. I will be leading an aid convoy from London to Gaza leaving on 14 February and travelling through France, Spain, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt and through Rafah and into Gaza. It will bring material aid and raise the banner of Palestine in all the countries that we visit.

President Obama has pledged to improve ties with the Muslim world
Obama said the U.S. will go after terrorist organizations that kill innocent civilians
President says the America will start by listening, not dictating

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- President Obama said his administration will offer a hand of friendship to the Muslim world, but will hunt down terrorist organizations that kill innocent civilians.

President Obama said the United States will go after terrorist organizations that kill innocent civilians.

"My job to the Muslim world is to communicate that the Americans are not your enemy," Obama said in an interview with the Al-Arabiya satellite television network. "We sometimes make mistakes. We have not been perfect."

In his run for the White House, Obama pledged to improve ties with the Muslim world, draw down U.S. troops in Iraq and close the Guantanamo Bay detention camp. The president has also pledged to address the Muslim world from a Muslim capital in the first 100 days of his administration. No location has been announced.

Obama said the United States will go after terrorist organizations that kill innocent civilians, but will do so while respecting the rule of law. The president said that difference makes America great.

The Obama administration has also taken an early interest in the Middle East peace process between the Israelis and the Palestinians, with the president naming former Sen. George Mitchell as his special envoy to the region.

"I think the most important thing is for the United States to get engaged right away," Obama told Al-Arabiya's Washington Bureau Chief Hisham Melhem. "I do believe that the moment is ripe for both sides to realize that the path that they are on is one that is not going to result in prosperity and security for their people."

A tentative cease-fire between Israel and Hamas-ruled Gaza began January 21 after a three-week military operation by Israeli troops in the Palestinian territory.

"Ultimately, we cannot tell either the Israelis or the Palestinians what's best for them. They're going to have to make some decisions," Obama said. "But I do believe that the moment is ripe for both sides to realize that the path that they are on is one that is not going to result in prosperity and security for their people. And that, instead, it's time to return to the negotiating table."

Obama said the United States will start by listening, not dictating, and then a response will be formulated after consultations with all the major parties involved.

The BBC’s pact with Israel

Money and ideology behind BBC’s decision not to broadcast Gaza humanitarian appeal

27 January 2009

The BBC’s refusal to broadcast a humanitarian appeal for Gaza on behalf of a group of charities is motivated by a desire to appease US advertisers for its commercial TV channel and website, and by Mark Thompson’s own political proclivities.

Many people have been shocked and bewildered by the BBC’s refusal to broadcast a national humanitarian appeal for Gaza on behalf of the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC), an umbrella organization for 13 humanitarian aid agencies.

However, the decision by the BBC’s director-general, Mark Thompson, not to broadcast the appeal should have come as no surprise. In fact, media observers have been witnessing a steady tilt by the corporation towards Israel since the turn of the millennium.

According to our sources, there are two fundamental reasons for this. The first is the need to boost advertising revenue for the debt-ridden BBC World News television channel, which cannot be seen in the UK. This channel relies heavily on advertisers from the United States who we understand have told the BBC in no uncertain terms that they would advertise with it only if the corporation changed its editorial line on the Arab-Israeli conflict in favour of Israel.

Related to this is the decision by the BBC to introduce advertising on its news website for users outside the UK, Although this had been in the planning since at least 2000, it was introduced only in November 2007. However, we understand that throughout this period BBC executives argued that the corporation must make further changes to its coverage of the Arab-Israeli conflict in order to insure that it is on the right side of US advertisers when goes commercial.

Stop paying license fee.

If we had people like Tony Benn in our governments, what more would we really need..... he an amazing human being.

You know all Brits should ring up the BBC and tell them that they wont be paying their license fee as a protest. If the BBC wants act as a mouthpiece for Israeli propaganda, then they should get their license fees from the Israelis.
