....But what if the sacrificial era has not gone by? Suppose the impulse to sacrifice, even to yield up the lives of children to gain supernatural favor, is still with us. If you consider, not what we say about ourselves, but what we do in relation to one another, you would observe that the twentieth century saw more children sacrificed to one cause or another than any previous century saw offered to its gods. The shift from religious belief to secular cause has not changed the fact that the increase of violence against innocents appears unrelenting.

With brutal precision, Wilfred Owen, writing during World War I in "The Parable of the Old Man and the Young," encapsulated the experience of the twentieth century. In his poem, even divine intervention cannot control Abraham's impulse to kill his child:

So Abram rose, and clave the wood, and went,
And took the fire with with him, and a knife.
And as they sojourned both of them together,
Isaac the first-born spake and said, My Father,
Behold the preparations, fire and iron,
But where the lamb, for this burnt-offering?
Then Abram bound the youth with belts and straps,
and builded parapets and trenches there,
And stretched forth the knife to slay his son.
When lo! an Angel called him out of heaven,
Saying, Lay not thy hand upon the lad,
Neither do anything to him, thy son.
Behold! Caught in a thicket by its horns,
A Ram. Offer the Ram of Pride instead.
But the old man would not so, but slew his son,
And half the seed of Europe, one by one.

....Abraham's curse remains our inheritance, because we live during a period of renewed sacrificial intensity, often without any awareness that violence since the First World War is unparalleled in its scale and in its choice of young victims. By untangling our actions from the atavistic impulse that kills children in the name of virtue, we can at last free Isaac from the cords that, had they remained tied, would have denied Abraham his progeny. Unless we do, unless Abraham's impulse and the means to transform that impulse are discovered, then Wilfred Owen will prove to be a prophet of this century as well as a principal poet of the last....

A licensed structural engineer trained in buildings’ responses to stress, Lomba saw more on the screen than you or I. He puzzled, “How did the structures collapse in near-symmetrical fashion when the damage was clearly not symmetrical?”

Lomba was hardly alone in his discomfort. Most structural engineers were surprised when the towers fell. Under the 11th Circuit's ruling in "The Siegelman Case," President Obama and contributors who accept appointments could be indicted and convicted of bribery and extortion if President Obama knew at the time they made a contribution that the donor wanted the post to which the President later appointed them.

54 former Attorneys General, both Democrats and Republicans, said the 11th Circuit's ruling in the Siegelman case means "a prosecutor has the power to indict and convict any politician and any donor whenever a donation was made and the politician took action consistent with the donor's desire, while aware of said desire."

Your Congressional representatives need to know about this. Send them a message today!

Here is why it is important to Members of the House and Senate:

What's at stake is whether an elected official can be prosecuted for doing something for a contributor. Sound crazy? It is! The U.S. Supreme Court made it clear in McCormick v. U.S. that it takes an actual explicit quid pro quo agreement before the line between politics and crime is crossed. However, in my case, the court said that juries may infer an agreement from the minds and actions of the elected official and the contributor, the opposite of explicit.

The 54 former State Attorneys General told the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals in the Siegelman case: "Such an interpretation puts at risk every politician who accepts a campaign contribution." "...criminalizing activities that fall short of an explicit quid pro quo agreement, can only lead to an impermissible chilling effect on the First Amendment right to contribute to political campaigns."

It is important not only to my freedom but also to every elected official, including the President Obama, to get this First Amendment issue clarified.

As I raise money to pay for my $150,000 appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court I am asking you to continue the fight in Congress.
