GOP Disses 9/11 Responders

WASHINGTON — First responders from 9/11 can accept if Republicans don’t vote for a bill to help ailing Ground Zero workers, but they say rudeness is another matter.

Several victims of the terror attacks who have become advocates on behalf of other ill responders say they were treated poorly when they called some Capitol Hill Republicans in hopes of getting them to back a measure coming up for a committee vote Wednesday.

“One office said, ‘Why do you people keep calling us? Leave us alone,’” said Charlie Giles, 41, from Barnegat, N.J. “‘You people?’ That is a disgrace from a congressman’s office.”

Giles, a Republican, said his rounds of calls — and GOP opposition to a bill to reopen the Sept. 11 Victims’ Compensation Fund — left him so angry he’s ready to denounce his party when he and other responders take a bus to the Capitol Wednesday.

“I’ll bring my Republican card, and show it to them,” he said. “If I have to tear it into a million pieces in front of them, I will.”

Giles, who was an EMT on Sept. 11, 2001, singled out the offices of Reps. Randy Forbes (R-Va.) and Thomas Rooney (R-Fla.), as did other angry responders. They said their reactions from other members of the GOP was better.

Spokespeople for both congressmen said they were not aware of any problems with callers, and insisted they provide unfailingly polite and helpful service.

In one instance, a spokesperson for Forbes thought an intern may have annoyed someone by offering to take their name and see if an appointment could be arranged.

“If someone felt they were mistreated, we apologize,” said Rooney spokesman Jeff Ostermayer. “Our office treats everyone who calls with courtesy and respect.”

Daily News calls to their offices were answered politely, but a worker in Rooney’s office said she couldn’t answer a question about the bill, and transferred the call to a Democratic committee office without saying that’s what she was doing.

“They were just cold,” said Glen Klein, 50, a retired city detective, “like you’re interrupting their lunch or something like that.”

Klein, of Centereach, L.I., spent nine months working at Ground Zero and is collecting Social Security disability.

James O’Connell, 50, an ex-Army man who recently survived a suicide attempt he blames on his 9/11 suffering, said he couldn’t understand the reception he got.

“They were at the very least, conduct unprofessional,” he said. “I don’t get politicians. I thought 9/11 was something that affected all Americans. I thought it was nonpartisan.

“I’m just baffled by the conduct of all these people,” he said, adding that it wasn’t just about his treatment on the phone that bothers him.

“There was such great unity in the country after 9/11 and I don’t understand why in 2009 people are dying and nobody cares,” he said.

‘Why do you people keep calling us? Leave us alone,’”

Unreal.

Wasn't it...

A Republican White House that changed the EPA reports so as to lie to the people of New York about the conditions in NYC? At least they're being consistent. Consistently criminal.

Do these people deserve to know how and why their loved ones were murdered? Do we deserve to know how and why 9/11 happened?

Malice

I have a really hard time understanding why the US government hasn't provided decent care for the first responders.

Even if we put aside the obvious moral obligation, you would think that both Repugs and Demorats would be eager to capitalize on their suffering for PR purposes.

It doesn't make any sense to me. Are they worried about setting a precedent? Do they think it might snowball into universal health care? Does it violate free market ethics? Or does their venality run so deep that they can't even be bothered to spare a tiny fraction of their monstrous budget to alleviate some of the suffering they caused?

At the end of the day it amounts to a final fuck you to the people of New York and the nation as a whole.

Yep.

These people are so selfish and inhuman that it boggles the mind. But too many of our fellow human beings are the same way, and it is sad to see them running the show and getting away with their crimes. Wish things would change.

Very Fishy

Very Fishy that the US government hasn't provided decent care for the first responders.... It was incredibly difficult to get them on the The View that time in 2007 to even air their story.... VERY fishy. If these are the heroes of 9/11 why should they be ignored? Why weren't they interviewed by the Commissioners since they were in the buildings? How can you have a serious investigation into a crime scene which ignores the eyewitness testimony of professionals who were there? VERY fishy. How can you have a serious investigation which ignores the forensic evidence of the crime scene?

Why does even the "alternative press" ignore the first responders? They ignore the lies of 9/11.... and the lies about the air being safe to breathe, which caused the health care crisis in the first place..... AND they ignore the plight of the first responders now??? Beyond fishy.

I think it's pretty obvious that they want them to die,

and sooner rather than later.

Many are direct witnesses to what happened on 9/11 itself and all are direct evidence and victims of the criminal negligence committed by the White House when they rewrote the EPA reports and told Christie Todd Whitman to lie through her teeth to everyone.

If they die, the problems mostly go away. I know that sounds horrible, but we are dealing with sociopaths here.

Plus, there are now so many questions about the events of 9/11 and the issue is becoming more public every day, that anything that touches of the event of 9/11 itself is best avoided in the minds of the corrupt elites and their minions.

Finally, there is the cost factor. To give all these folks the care and compensation they and their families deserve will be expensive and there's really no easy way for Congress to get a cut or a kickback on this and no huge lobby bribing them to do it. This is how we know how corrupt a system we actually have.

My advice is for as many sick first responders who can, to just go and sit in their Congressperson's office, either the one in D.C. or their closest local office. Just sit there with a sign and cough, all day every day. And we should get Willie Nelson, Jesse Ventura and anyone we can to have a series of fund raisers to support their camp out for care.

These people deserve better and it is totally disgraceful how they are being ignored and pushed aside.

The truth shall set us free. Love is the only way forward.

Some good points you raise there LW. Your analysis makes a lot of sense.

Mesothelioma?

I think the illnesses these first responders are suffering from points directly to Larry Silverstein's complicity/involvement in the 9/11 attacks. He certainly would have known about the asbestos in the twin towers, and that it would have to be removed, when he bought the property from the Port Authority. I find it plausable that he faced the decision of spending billions on asbestos removal and renovation or receiving billions in insurance claims from the (seperate) attacks. That's motive to me.

Anyone know which insurance company paid-out on the claim? AIG perhaps?

No

"He certainly would have known about the asbestos in the twin towers, and that it would have to be removed, when he bought the property from the Port Authority."

I think that's wrong. Vornado gave a better bid than Silverstein/Westfield, and only dropped out of the bid because other issues.
If there was a word about abestos in the lease action, surely the due dilligence check would have prevented them from placing a market price bid.
Asbestos liabilities are just unpredictable. But who knows exactly, since we don't know the words of the lease contract.

The PA or better rogue elements in it have a far better motive: They lost all their suits against their insurers and the asbestos industry just prior to the lease action, and have created another profiteer, even a jewish one, that's far better than a organisation like the PA, if you wan't to discredit hot removal claims by mixing them with antisemitism-accusations.

Even the asbestos industry had better motives: There was not only asbestos in the Blazeshield, but also in Monokote and Vermiculite. Google Libby vermiculite mine in Montana. Vermiculite was used in 40 million US-homes for insulation, and till now it is not widely known. That's a can of worms. And with Dresser/Halliburton there may be some links to the highest US admin.

Never Forget ...

... Get Over It, Already.

That's...

A contradiction.

Do these people deserve to know how and why their loved ones were murdered? Do we deserve to know how and why 9/11 happened?

That's ...

... the point, Jon.

I know.

Sometimes it's fun to point out the obvious.

Blackrock Private Hedge Fund, got $1 Billion from FEMA

when the towers collapsed. This set up the WTC Captive Insurance fund, which has spent over $200 million, to SUE WTC First Responders.

No Main Stream Media outlet, has EVER reported this fact.

& I bet 1% off the millions & millions & millions of 9.11 truthers, know this.
