Clerk shoots down 9/11 initiative

By Will Glovinsky

The petition for a ballot initiative that would create a second subpoena-powered 9/11 Commission was rejected by the City Clerk on July 24. Out of the more than 50,000 signatures submitted on June 24 by New York City Coalition for Accountability Now, the Clerk’s Office certified only 26,003 signatures — almost 4,000 signatures shy of the 30,000 necessary to compel the City Council to vote on whether the measure should be put before voters this November.

Last week the New York Supreme Court ordered an independent referee to review the 24,664 signatures invalidated by the City Clerk, and NYC CAN now has until Aug. 21 to compile a list of disputed signatures that will be presented to the referee. All signatories of the petition must be listed as registered voters in the April 2009 New York City Board of Elections database.

Ted Walter, executive director of NYC CAN, said that the coalition’s reviewers were finding errors — or legitimate signatures — among the Clerk’s rejected names.

“We’re getting to be optimistic that we can reach the 30,000 mark,” he said.

If the 30,000-signature threshold is reached, the Council will vote on the measure, although a thumbs-down vote can be overridden by the certification of an additional 15,000 signatures. NYC CAN also expects a challenge from the city over the legality of the petition, which would create an independent commission with the mandate to seek indictments where appropriate.

NYC CAN spokesperson Kyle Hence said that the city’s legal qualms with the petition included protocols for the appointment of commission officers, the funding of the commission and the broader question of whether New York City has the authority to investigate aspects of the attack that fall beyond its municipal jurisdiction.

Hence explained that there was little legal precedent to point to in defense of the proposed commission’s broad scope.

“What we’re proposing is unprecedented,” Hence said. “We’re looking to create a quasi-public commission with subpoena power.”

The original bipartisan 9/11 Commission, chaired by former Governors Thomas Kean and Lee Hamilton, closed in August 2004 after publishing a best-selling report that gave recommendations for protecting the nation from further acts of terrorism, and criticized the C.I.A. and F.B.I. for not serving Presidents Clinton and Bush as ably as possible. The report did not hold any person or agency responsible for allowing the attacks to occur.

Thank you...

To the "Villager" for covering this.

Edit: Just so everyone knows, Cindy Sheehan is really pushing 9/11 on facebook.

Edit: Just made this...

Edit: Got an update tonight from's grassroot call. According to Janice Matthews, who was told by Ted Walter, there is an 80% chance they will get enough signatures for the petition to go to council. If that happens, I imagine the legitimacy of the petition will be argued over in court.

Do these people deserve to know how and why their loved ones were murdered? Do we deserve to know how and why 9/11 happened?

I don't know how to do that.

Two things she just posted...

my son was killed because of the lies before, during, and after 9-11...people are still dying from responders to our troops and innocent's not so easy for some of us to just forget about it...truth and justice would be sweet...

I have a very simple, un-scientific reason to not believe the official 9-11 came out of the Bush Administration. We can all agree that they are a bunch of lying mother-effers, except when it comes to 9-11...all of a sudden everything makes... sense and is totally above board and to everyone: our government lies! and it especially lied about everything when Bush was prez...duh!

Cindy is getting a lot of flack for supporting the 9/11 Truth cause... getting called a lot of names, etc... She's learning that questioning 9/11 is a no no.

Do these people deserve to know how and why their loved ones were murdered? Do we deserve to know how and why 9/11 happened?

If you have no legs to stand on

then your best bet is to call someone a name and hope its enough of a distraction from the facts.

Any Connection to The Village Voice?

Is the Villager a printed publication or online only? Any connection to the Village Voice? If not maybe we could razz V.V. a little bit about this.

Regardless, thanks for covering.

If I'm not mistaken...

The Villager is, I think, a printed publication also. At least it used to be. It is NOT connected, so far as I know, to the Village Voice, but is a small, independent newspaper focusing on lower Manhattan, including Tribeca and the WTC area.... It has covered 9/11 truth-related issues fairly and competently before.

The Village Voice...

Has covered our efforts in the past. I hope they cover this.

Do these people deserve to know how and why their loved ones were murdered? Do we deserve to know how and why 9/11 happened?

The level of conditioning of any intelligent person past the age of reason on September 11th 2001 can be determined by their interpretation of the events of that day.

80% chance?

It looked like they were fishing out a lot of legitimate signatures from the the rejected ones. And then given the thousands of new ones yet to be be checked, I'd have thought the chances would be much better.

By the way, a comment in this blog just reminded me of one of my favorite movie lines which I find particularly appropriate. It's from Heaven Can Wait.

"The likelihood of one individual being right increases in direct proportion to the intensity with which others are trying to prove him wrong."
