The best teaching tool I've come across in my 25 years of teaching is the following 10-minute video: The US Constitution was born from war against tyranny - the word of choice for unconstrained government that acted harmfully toward the public's political and economic interests. The Founding Fathers had much to say in defense of citizen vigilence for liberty, for only we can protect our freedom:

“A mere demarcation on parchment of the constitutional limits (of government) is not a sufficient guard against those encroachments which lead to a tyrannical concentration of all the powers of government in the same hands.” - James Madison, Federalist Paper #48, 1788.

I teach US Government. Every curriculum of what America means (America is a political distinction) includes these principles: limited government and rule under the law. Unlimited government is a dictatorship, literally whatever the government dictates (says) at any particular time. The idea of everyone playing by the rules is also critical. Without it, we have an elitist oligarchy.

As I've documented in previous articles, the US is now under key policies that are unlimited by the US Constitution; meaning the dictate of a collusion of our two political parties' "leadership."

Something

seems to have gone wrong with the blog post..

...

Madison's scheme doesn't seem to have worked out very well. Perhaps there's a flaw in the design.

the problem is us

The structure gave ample opportunity; we've dropped the ball. The founders were adament about personal responsibility: http://www.examiner.com/x-18425-LA-County-Nonpartisan-Examiner~y2009m8d1...

What the structure permitted (alas)

The founders fashioned a structure which--regardless of their intention--had led by the 1880s to a Supreme Court which ruled that the constitutional protections of individual rights also apply to corporations. From this disastrous ruling has ensued the enormous amassing of wealth and power by corporations which has brought the republic to its current state, and which is utterly incompatible with democracy.

Appeals for 'personal responsibilty' don't mean much unless the social and economic context are at least taken into consideration.

..

Did the Founding Mason-Fathers include women, coloured people and the poor in " We, The People " ??
Your Constitution means exactly what the people in power want it to mean, that's what Dubya meant when he allegedly
called it a "Goddamn piece of paper" .
