Who’s Afraid of 9/11 Conspiracy Theories?
By Maidhc O’Cathail for Veterans Today

“The lady doth protest too much, methinks.” —Queen Gertrude, Hamlet.

Whenever someone insists too strongly about something not being true, we tend to suspect that maybe it is. In their denials of involvement in 9/11, do Israel’s apologists “protest too much”?

While it would take a small book to adequately document the Israeli connection to 9/11—as editor Justin Raimondo has attempted in The Terror Enigma—let us briefly recall some of the more intriguing facts as reported in the mainstream media, involving dancing Israelis, Odigo warnings, and Zim’s timely move.

The story of the five Israelis who were seen celebrating and filming as the Twin Towers burned and collapsed was investigated by Neil Mackay in Scotland’s Sunday Herald. The so-called “dancing Israelis” worked for Urban Moving Systems, later deemed to be a Mossad front by the FBI. Despite failing numerous polygraph tests, the young men were deported to Israel two months later. Back home, several of the men appeared on a TV chat show, in which one of them amazingly said, “Our purpose was to document the event.”

Two employees of Odigo, an Israeli instant messaging service, received messages two hours before the World Trade Center attack on September 11 predicting the attack would happen, Ha’aretz reported.

Zim-American Israeli Shipping Co., part-owned by the Israeli government, moved their North American headquarters from the 16th floor of the WTC to Norfolk, Virginia one week before the 9/11 attacks, incurring a $50,000 fine for breaking its lease, according to the Jerusalem Post.

Despite being in the public domain, none of these relevant facts are mentioned in the 9/11 Commission’s 567-page report.

Moreover, Philip Zelikow, the executive director of the 9/11 Commission, is concerned about the spread of such inconvenient facts to the wider public. “Our worry,” he says, “is when things become infectious…. [then] this stuff can be deeply corrosive to public understanding. You can get where the bacteria can sicken the larger body.”

But was Zelikow speaking here as an American government official or as a pro-Israeli insider?

In the same month that he authored the so-called “Bush Doctrine” of preemptive war, which provided the justification for the 2003 invasion of Iraq, Zelikow made this candid admission: “Why would Iraq attack America or use nuclear weapons against us? I’ll tell you what I think the real threat (is) and actually has been since 1990—it’s the threat against Israel.”

Yet, instead of investigating the Israeli connection, Zelikow used the 9/11 Commission to sell the Israeli-inspired Iraq war to the American people.

Zelikow’s “bacteria” quote is cited in a 2008 paper entitled “Conspiracy Theories.” Co-authored by Cass Sunstein, who currently heads President Obama’s White House Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs, the main focus of the paper “involves conspiracy theories relating to terrorism, especially theories that arise from and post-date the 9/11 attacks.”

Rather than attempting to debunk such theories, Sunstein and Vermeule claim that those who suspect Israeli involvement in 9/11 suffer from a “crippled epistemology.” This, the authors argue, is due to “a sharply limited number of (relevant) informational sources.” In other words, “they know very few things, and what they know is wrong.”

To counter these suspicions, Sunstein recommends “cognitive infiltration of extremist groups, whereby government agents, or their allies (acting either virtually or in real space, and either openly or anonymously) will undermine the crippled epistemology of those who subscribe to such theories. They do so by planting doubts about the theories and stylized facts that circulate within such groups, thereby introducing beneficial cognitive diversity.”

It could, of course, be argued that Sunstein’s work also suffers from a crippled epistemology—his research relies heavily on pro-Israeli sources, most notably the notorious Islamophobe Daniel Pipes.

Pipes is a bit of an expert on conspiracy theories, having written two books on the subject. “Conspiracism provides a key to understanding the political culture of the Middle East,” Pipes opines in The Hidden Hand: Middle East Fears of Conspiracy. “It helps explain much of what would otherwise seem illogical or implausible, including the region’s record of political extremism and volatility, its culture of violence, and its poor record of modernization.”

Like Sunstein, Pipes is concerned that many in the region suspect Israeli involvement in 9/11. “The implications in the Middle East are quite profound,” Pipes told the LA-based Jewish Journal. “It’s one more brick in the edifice of fear and loathing of Israel and the Jews.”

In the absence of a proper 9/11 investigation, there remains a broad range of opinion about the precise nature of Israeli complicity. In The Terror Enigma, Justin Raimondo tentatively concludes that the Israeli connection to 9/11 amounts to “foreknowledge and passive collaboration with Bin Laden’s jihad.” Other experts, such as Alan Sabrosky, are less circumspect. Dr. Sabrosky, former director of studies of the Strategic Studies Institute at the US Army War College, has recently stated that “it is 100 percent certain that 9/11 was a Mossad operation. Period.”

Either way, it’s hardly surprising that some of the most obsessive critics of 9/11 “conspiracy theories” have ties to Israel. If Americans ever find out that their “staunchest ally” had anything to do with the mass murder of their fellow citizens on September 11, 2001, the would-be conspiracy debunkers have good reason to be afraid.

Doubt is not a pleasant condition...

“it is 100 percent certain that 9/11 was a Mossad operation. Period.”

Not for me or most others I know why repeat such things as if they were conclusive?

On Zionism

Sabrosky seems, like most people, ignorant of the fact that the bedrock for Jewish nationalism was not laid by by Jews, but rather robber barons and Domnionist Christians; the former lusting for the profits inherent to colonial conquest, and the latter expecting to bring Jesus back (this essay provides more detail). Granted, many Jews have come on board Zionism since it's inception, but they are still only a fraction of the movement, the visible face on a much larger beast made up of all the corporations and social groups which support Israel's ongoing colonization of what little is left of Palestine, and our expanded conquest of the Middle East.

So, while I've seen plenty of evidence which suggests Israeli involvement, I have little reason to suspect such Israelis would have been acting in their capacity as agents of Israel, let alone that the attacks were masterminded by Israel. I figure the real masterminds behind 9/11 were some small subset of the various corporate barons who stood to benefit most from the attacks. Granted, I do consider it rather likely that Zionists were behind 9/11, but I rather doubt the bulk of them were Jewish by any stretch.

More about Sabrosky

I would expect that Sabrosky, who has a Jewish grandmother and Jewish relatives, would be quite familiar with the questions regarding Jewish nationalism, and not ignorant of some of the concerns expressed by you with regard to non-Jewish Zionists. Opinions differ on these issues quite substantially among informed commentators.

I would be very surprised if Sabrosky is not familiar with the Dominionist Christians, given his high level connections to the military. I am under the impression that there is a strong Dominionist movement in the U.S. military.

Sabrosky did an interesting interview with Kevin Barret this week (yes, the much maligned Kevin Barret). The interview is available on line, and is well worth listening to. Barret actually challenged Sabrosky to provide evidence, perhaps as devils advocate. I came away thinking that he has made a strong case - not airtight, but much stronger than I thought it might be. Sabrosky is working on a more detailed article outlining his thinking.

Christians Smishtians

I don't doubt that Sabrosky is familiar with the Dominionist Christians, but I've yet to find many people aware of the fact that they got corporate fat cats like J. D, Rockefeller and J. P. Morgan to sign on to the Zionist project years before even Herzl came aboard, let alone any notable number of Jews. Again, such corporate interests have always comprised the bulk of the power behind our Middle East policy, and the vast majority of those corporate leaders aren't Jewish by any stretch. From what I've seen of Sabrosky, it appears he is like most people, Jewish or otherwise, completely oblivious to this, and his conclusions seem derived from such ignorance. Regardless, his making claims of fact without anything even resembling proof exposes him as a sloppy thinker, and that along with his ignoring my attempt to open dialogue with him leave me with no reason to to take him seriously.

Never heard of Moses Hess?

You might try Theodore Herzl as well.

Don't give Justin too much credit.

He has been a HUGE disappointment to the 9/11 truth movement.................
Really, to the seeking of truth by anyone.
Very soon after 9/11 Justin began questioning the actions of many Israelis. He came out with that book, and I bought it, and read it. What ground breaking information. Something was really wrong with the official story. We needed more evidence, though. But this was a great breakthrough.
Then I waited. So much more information was coming out from so many other investigators..................but nothing from Justin.
Months went by, and then years.
And the only articles from Justin were, surprisingly, mocking of the 9/11 truth movement.
What happened? What in the world happened?

I have never figured it out. Maybe somebody here will.
At about the same time, I began reading articles in Alternet and Common Dreams and Counterpunch that were insulting of truthers.
And then I realized that Democracy Now, which goes after anything seditious, was completely censoring the 9/11 truth story.

Justin was being joined by Amy Goodman, Joshua Holland, and Cockburn..........all of them deciding truth be damned................something else apparently was more important than truth. What could it be?

Was it threats against them? I thought so for awhile, but really, if that was the case, somewhere we would find out about it.
No, I think it is money. Filthy lucre. Root of all evil and censorship.

I soon realized that these sites rely on funding............and some of it comes from foundational support. I followed some of the links and connections of the foundations that support Alternet and found the huge international corporations and ties to Israel among them.

Well, I don't know anything for sure, but somebody must have some kind of information about why somebody like Justin Raimondo, who seemed brave in digging into many areas dangerous for a journalist, would completely walk away from the truth.

Justin, can you tell us? Can anybody?

Forgot one piece of information against Israel

I've always felt strongly that the attack on 9/11/2001 was a precision military attack on the United States by a foreign country. It was then blamed on another people (Arabs / Muslims).

It seems that Israel is that country. The information below was not mentioned in the article. What if a Pakistani spy was arrested in India and had a cousin who was a 9/11 Hijacker. Would that not be pushed up to the top of the 9/11 Evidence totem pole? It's obvious that Israel is afforded some sort of taboo based protection when it comes to questioning violent acts it commits against other peoples. It's about time we accept the likely possibility that Israel planned and executed the 9/11 attacks and blamed them on Muslim / Arab peoples. Considering the USS Liberty attacks and others, we have a historical precedent where Israel attacks a US ship and attempts to kill all on board and sink the ship. It would seem the goal was to sink the ship and blame it on Egypt.

Sound familiar?

Israeli Spy Brothers Arrested In Lebanon - 2/18/2009

"Mr. Jarrah’s arrest has shed a rare light onto a world of spying and subversion that usually persists in secret."

"To friends and neighbors, he was an earnest supporter of the Palestinian cause, an affable, white-haired family man who worked as an administrator at a nearby school."

"To Israel, he appears to have been a valued spy, sending reports and taking clandestine photographs of Palestinian groups and Hezbollah since 1983"

"...along with his brother Yusuf, who is accused of helping him spy — and he awaits trial by a military court"

"Mr. Jarrah has said he was recruited in 1983 — a year after Israel began a major invasion of Lebanon — by Israeli officers who had imprisoned him, according to investigators."

"It is not the family’s first brush with notoriety. One of Mr. Jarrah’s cousins, Ziad al-Jarrah, was among the 19 hijackers who carried out the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, though the men were 20 years apart in age and do not appear to have known each other well."
