PALM BEACH GARDENS — The 36-foot-long steel beam is bent, but city officials say they are proud that the remnant from the World Trade Center soon will be displayed at the planned Sept. 11 Memorial Park.

Steel beam number C-89, which was on the south tower between the 12th-15th floors, is expected to be in place by the ninth anniversary of the attacks. The brick-red beam, weighing 10 tons, will be placed reaching toward the sky in front of Fire Station 3 on the north side of Northlake Boulevard, just west of Military Trail.

"We are putting it straight up because we want to show Americans are still standing strong," said artist Mark Fuller, a West Palm Beach resident who was in New York City the day before the attacks.

Fuller, along with several other local landscape artists, engineers and land planners, have donated their time to build the memorial. The city has approved spending up to $60,000 out of the expected $140,000 cost, which includes time and labor from donors. The $60,000 is from a fund paid by developers that can only be used for public art. The site plan was approved Thursday night.

"Our goal is to do it all from donations and not use any of that $60,000," Fuller said.

The design will be simple, with lights, brick walkways, landscaping and 8-foot-tall glass panels etched with the names of the nearly 3,000 victims in half-inch letters. A police and firefighter symbol will be placed next to the names of all firefighters and police officers killed, said Fuller.

Donations are needed to pay for the glass and etchings of the names. Supporters hope someone will donate a truck to bring the beam from New York City to Palm Beach Gardens.

The plan calls for sending four city police officers and four firefighters to New York City. They will escort the flag-draped beam, bent from the searing heat on Sept. 11, 2001, to Palm Beach Gardens. A Memorial Day groundbreaking is planned.

"The truck will stop in Stuart. Motorcycles will gather and give us a big escort into the city," said Palm Beach Gardens Deputy Fire Chief C.R. Brown.

It Has A Little S-Curve Bend

Not being a structural engineer I don't know what that exactly means.

Steel Held Up Well Under Debris

penguin,

It means that after being buried under in excess of hundreds of tons of debris, that was the only damage done to the steel section!

Embarrassing for America

These memorials throughout the country need to be taken down, unless one is okay with memorials to Americans killing Americans!

Memorials to Americans killing Americs could prevent another 911

bonjour ,
I am not so sure as you that they need to be taken down because when the truth comes out these monuments will be a bare reminder what a small handfull of evil men can do. Be it the Bush daddy, Dick Cheney, Bin Laden or an other Dick or Harry we have to be reminded daily what we must not let happen again Hundreds of thousands ( if not millions ) of innocent lives were lost with 911 : Iraqi, Afghan, ... American and this we can prevent happening again is we can bring out the truth and keep the monuments showing this evil. The standing straight up for truth is what Daniel Ellsberg did and he was part of the first lies !

Yours John

Damn Embarrassing

mouv4x8,

I have no problem with other nations who lost citizens here in America on 9/11 putting up such memorials, but here in America it's like putting up a memorial to Slavery or to the American Indians for the lands they lost; it's just damn embarrassing. But you're probably right, though I'm still squirming at 9/11 memorials.

In the fifth pic in this sequence are these angle cuts from a torch, post collapse or is it the result of angled cutting charges? Any feedback would be appreciated.

I can see people

sitting down & discussing what really happened. Great place to have a real conversation.

This is GREAT!

Every permanent memorial about teh events of 9/11 give us a location to establish an ongoing 9/11 Truth for World Peace vigil.

Soon, the phrase "Remember 9/11" will become a reminder of an empire gone bad,..and citizens not doing proper diligence in the oversight of their governement.

Its like the KSM trial in NYC...NO WAY do the PTB want to provide us an opportunity to spread the truth about the HI PERPS' lies and cover-ups of 9/11.

Its too bad that Shanksville is so far away from anything as it will be poorly attended...or poorly vigiled by PA Truthers etc.

TOUCHE!

"Soon, the phrase "Remember 9/11" will become a reminder of an empire gone bad,..and citizens not doing proper diligence in the oversight of their government."

S Curve

If this is the exact shape that they want to use it must be manipulated steel to make it more graceful and sculptural. Of course the cut marks will be hacked off. I agree with Robin, any site like this will be a focal point for protests and will attract attention.

Destruction of Evidence

In my view, this constitutes destruction of criminal evidence. All physical remains from the WTC site should be kept consolidated and protected from tampering; at least until a legitimate investigation has taken place, and preferably longer. Any action which compromises the integrity of the evidence should be prohibited, and if violated, treated as a criminal matter.
