As Hillary Talks About Tolerating Free Expression, Police in Front of Her Brutalize Ray McGovern for Turning His Back

From Partnership for Civil Justice

As Secretary of State Hillary Clinton gave her speech at George Washington University yesterday condemning governments that arrest protestors and do not allow free expression, 71-year-old Ray McGovern was grabbed from the audience in plain view of her by police and an unidentified official in plain clothes, brutalized and left bleeding in jail. She never paused speaking. When Secretary Clinton began her speech, Mr. McGovern remained standing silently in the audience and turned his back. Mr. McGovern, a veteran Army officer who also worked as a C.I.A. analyst for 27 years, was wearing a Veterans for Peace t-shirt.

Blind-sided by security officers who pounced upon him, Mr. McGovern remarked, as he was hauled out the door, "So this is America?" Mr. McGovern is covered with bruises, lacerations and contusions inflicted in the assault.

Mr. McGovern is being represented by the Partnership for Civil Justice Fund (PCJF). "It is the ultimate definition of lip service that Secretary of State Clinton would be trumpeting the U.S. government's supposed concerns for free speech rights and this man would be simultaneously brutalized and arrested for engaging in a peaceful act of dissent at her speech," stated attorney Mara Verheyden-Hilliard of the PCJF.

Mr. McGovern now works for Tell the Word, a publishing arm of the ecumenical Church of the Saviour in the Adams Morgan neighborhood of Washington, D.C.

"Hillary is the driving force, together with a few others, behind the wars in Afghanistan. She's one of the big hawks in Iran. When I look at her and her husband that they don't know the first thing about war. I do and so do my fellow Veterans for Peace. I have to make clear that we Veterans for Peace think that her policies are an abomination to the nation, that they are at cross purposes to the country and not everybody should applaud and give her the idea that she's doing the right thing."

"I knew that Hillary knew, at the beginning of the war, that Hillary knew how things would go. There was a young lady who was working as Hillary Clinton's personal staff chief, when she was a senator in 2002 and 2003, was in a class I taught in DC and I'd ask her to give her boss articles I wrote. And she did give them to her. So I know that. She made a political calculation that she needed to be strong because she was a woman even though she knew from us that the unintended consequences would be catastrophic. She knew all that and made that calculation."

"The height of irony, of course, is that was her tragic flaw that let Obama beat her. She supported the war and Obama didn't. She is the height of hypocrisy. When people die because we have hypocrites at the top of our government, that compels me to make a statement in whatever way I can. It was not the theme of her speech that I was protesting. It was her war policies and support of Mubarak."

When Secretary Clinton walked into the room, the audience rose and applauded before sitting back down. All but Ray McGovern, just as he had done hundreds of times before in the Catholic church without incident. McGovern described what happened next.

"It was my symbolic way of saying not everybody agrees with her. I turned my back to her and stood [silently]. When she came in I not only remained standing but I turned my back to her."

This time things were very different. Ray commented, "I didn't think that would get me roughed up and arrested for disorderly conduct."

Ray explained that when he would stand in silent witness at the church, his daughter would be with him keeping an eye on things. This time there was no one to warn him that two large men were approaching him. Nor was there any warning issued by the men, according to McGovern, as they grabbed him and dragged him out of the room.

"They grabbed me and the shock wore off. There was a real struggle. I shouted, 'This is America.' Then I said, 'Who are you?' This is a mystery to me. Who were they? The guy in the suit was the one who did the damage. He was brutal."

"They took me outside, put two sets of iron handcuffs that pierced my wrists. The bleeding went all over my pants. One guy said, "I pricked my finger" like it was his blood."

"I was bleeding in the car so I said 'I think you need to put some gauze on me.' They handed me to the DC police and they told I was being charged with disorderly conduct. I was booked, fingerprinted, mug shot taken. They put me in a little cell -- must be the same size as Bradley Manning's-- about six by four feet."

"It was about three hours that they held me until they let me out. I had to take a cab to the hospital where they x-rayed me, treated me and dressed my wounds. Then the doctors told me that since this was an assault on me, I had to inform the police about who had assaulted me. A little humor helped then."

Four years ago, McGovern attended another speech and made national news. The speaker was Donald Rumsfeld and the talk was being broadcast live on CNN. During the Q&A, McGovern took his turn at the mic and asked the former Secretary of Defense why he had lied about weapons of mass destruction.

Security immediately approached McGovern, but Rumsfeld stopped them choosing instead to attempt to outwit the seasoned analyst. The exchange that ensued led to what Keith Olbermann would later call the "vivisection of Defense Secretary Rumsfeld."

Comparing the two experiences, Ray remarked:

"When Clinton started talking about how people beat up and arrested people in Iran, it gave some poetic justice, a great irony, to my standing there and what happened to me then, when she's talking about what happened in other countries and there I am being handled in a vicious way...God knows what would happen next. Maybe some senior would ask her questions [she doesn't take questions]. As bad as Donald Rumsfeld was, he let me speak. He let me speak and engaged me in dialog."

"At the same [Rumsfeld] speech, there was a courageous guy who stood with his back to Rumsfeld the entire speech. They left him completely alone and he walked out at the end, unbothered. Four years later, things have changed.

In response to the charges of disorderly conduct filed against him, he said, "There was a lot of disorderly conduct, but I wasn't responsible for it."

McGovern says he is not worried about the charges, commenting that "With all those cameras and photos there has to be someone who will come forward with pictures of me and what happened to me to prove I was attacked, I wasn't warned."

He concluded, "I'm sore, but I'm glad I did it."

The words...

...escape me.

God bless you, Ray Mcgovern.

A goddamned disgrace

Standing in solidarity with Mr McGovern who was brutalized at the hands of the emerging police state. Hillary is a war monger and a hypocrite of the worst kind. She was in clear view of this despicable act by reactionary thugs while she was giving lip service to free expression. I hope these "men" are brought to justice.

Damn right

and well put.

Hellary is a war monger.

Well said "zombie bill hicks". Hellary is a big part of the NWO gang of thugs. Don't worry, they will be brought to justice soon. It's just a matter of time.

Ray could not have picked a better moment the stand in silent protest.

I watched the video early this morning and it had around 300 hits. Then I immediately watched it again. Then I refreshed my screen and it jumped to over 6000.

Love live Ray McGovern. We need him.

Breaking News: Ray McGovern Brutalized & Left Bleeding by Hillary Clinton Police, “So this is America!”

Wednesday, 16. February 2011

To Those Who Second-Guess Our Police State Status: Shame on You!

I just received the following news and I am way too upset to write a coherent piece on this. Ray McGovern is a good friend of mine. We live less than 10 miles apart. Together we have participated in many events and protests. He is one of the most informed, articulate, gentle, peace-loving and peace-seeking human beings I’ve ever known…For me, this hits too close to home: My father was similarly brutalized by dictator regimes, and that was only the beginning, before it escalated to being tortured and having his toenails pulled out by the state police. Why? He was a doctor, a surgeon with an inquiring mind, and he spoke out whenever he could against dictatorships and for liberties. Participating in peaceful demonstrations, encouraging others to rise up for their rights, and reading authors such as Steinbeck (the American author black-listed there as ‘communist and anarchist’) landed him on the list of to-be-punished and pacified…

Right now, at this point, all I have to say to those who second-guess our nation’s police state status is this: “Shame on you!” As for my irate minority friends over here at Boiling Frogs, please help disseminate this news, because the scum bag media won’t;’ thank you.

At Clinton Speech: Veteran Bloodied, Bruised & Arrested for Standing Silently

As Secretary of State Hillary Clinton gave her speech at George Washington University yesterday, condemning governments that arrest protestors and do not allow free expression, 71-year-old Ray McGovern was grabbed from the audience in plain view of her by police and an unidentified official in plain clothes, brutalized and left bleeding in jail. Blind-sided by security officers who pounced upon him, Mr. McGovern remarked, as he was hauled out the door, “So this is America?” As you see, Mr. McGovern is covered with bruises, lacerations and contusions inflicted in the assault.

A National Disgrace

Yet also a beautiful act of civil disobedience. I literally cannot think of another action that has so brazenly showcased the hypocrisy of the modern American state. Hillary was literally talking about human rights and freedom of speech while Ray was being dragged away!

People in Wisconsin are also rising up against the fascist governor's attempt to crush labor unions.

Interesting times!

"Yet also a beautiful act of civil disobedience."

Also that it is getting a lot of exposure which will help some of the blind to see.

Sibel Edmunds refering to the McGovern/Clinton incident: "To Those Who Second-Guess Our Police State Status: Shame on You!"

Absolutely!

And thanks for the update re Ray's condition. Veterans for Peace are showing us the way. Along with the people of Tunisia, Egypt, and countless other "third world" and "second world" countries where "ordinary" citizens are overcoming their fear. The People's revolution is coming...

They violated Ray

It's hard to top that in terms of hitting rock bottom.

This...

is outrageous!

Ray McGovern is

what it means to be an American. A thousand thanks, Ray.

Hillary kept her composure and didn't flinch while he was beaten. Who in hell does she think she is?

Q: "Who in hell does she think she is?"

She thinks she is Queen.

We all know she is a HARPY!

VETERAN’S GROUP DEMANDS APOLOGY FROM SEC. OF STATE CLINTON
Claims vet was manhandled for silent protest

(NATIONAL) -- Could it be the U.S. government thinks peaceful, civilian protest against government is fine on the streets of Cairo, Egypt but not on U.S. soil?

As Secretary of State Hillary Clinton gave a speech at George Washington University yesterday condemning governments that arrest protestors and do not allow free expression - and lauding freedom of speech on the Internet - 71-year-old military veteran Ray McGovern was grabbed from the audience in plain view of her by police and an unidentified official in plain clothes and hustled out of the building and, according to McGovern and his supporters, was “brutalized and left bleeding in jail.”

What McGovern did was simply remain standing silently in the audience and turned his back on her as Secretary Clinton began her speech.

That was it.

McGovern, a veteran Army officer who also worked as a C.I.A. analyst for 27 years, was wearing Veterans for Peace t-shirt.

Blind-sided by security officers who pounced upon him, McGovern remarked, as he was hauled out the door, "So this is America?"

According to Mara Verheyden-Hilliard, attorney with the Partnership for Civil Justice Fund, “For this peaceful expression of dissent, he ended up bruised, bloodied, arrested, and jailed. Secretary Clinton never paused, continuing her speech lecturing other countries about the need to allow freedom of expression and dissent, while Mr. McGovern was hauled out in front of her.”

McGovern was later found to have his arm covered with bruises. The metal handcuffs were fastened so tightly that his wrists were cut and some blood flowed from the cuts.

After being held by local police, McGovern was told he was being charged with disorderly conduct.

.

It could be a another signal

a warning that if u're gonna protest, no matter which way, force will be used against you. That is a sign of fear of course, and also a sign that the mnessage of such a protest is feared. Maybe the PTB think it's time to make us think a bit, letting us (the people who know and sense what's going on) know that if they're going to be removed, it won't be without lots of violence. I think we'd better make damn well sure we have a strategy to deal with this highly likely scenario. I for one, am having a hard time figuring out what the best way would be to go about this.

Outstanding move by Ray, keeping his head up high, something to be proud of.

Thanks Ray McGovern for Taking A Stand

When I heard about this I was mad as hell at how you were treated. I'm very proud of you for taking a stand. A few years ago, I interrupted Bill Clinton during a speech he made in Milwaukee to help Hillary win the presidential election. I left immediately after I was finished interupting Bill's speech. The police stopped me outside the building, but I refused to talk with them except to say, " I used my right of free speech and I left the building immediately after". I sure wasn't handled the way you were. They let me walk away. Thanks again Ray for taking a stand and for standing up to this hypocrite. Good luck with beating this charge.
Take Care Matt
