NYC CAN Files Petition

Photobucket

On Wednesday, June 24, 2009, the New York City Coalition for Accountability Now filed a petition containing 52,000 signatures calling for a referendum on the creation of a New York City independent commission to investigate the events of September 11, 2001.

9/11 Family Members Maureen Hunt and Manny Badillo, and First Responders Charlie Giles of the Feal Good Foundation and Bill Gleason of the World Trade Center Rescuers Foundation, arrived at the City Clerk’s office to deliver the petition and speak in behalf of all the proud and concerned citizens who deserve an unbiased, nonpolitical investigation of the tragedy that has affected us so deeply.

Thank you for getting us this far! City Council now has until August 24 to approve the placement of the referendum on the November 3 ballot. As hundreds more 9/11 family members, first responders and survivors join NYC CAN’s campaign for a new investigation, lobbying their council members to support the petition, our chances grow.

In the unlikely event City Council does not approve the placement of the referendum on the ballot, NYC CAN is prepared to deliver an additional 30,000 signatures on August 24 to guarantee it gets on the ballot. We already have 8,000 of the additional 30,000!

Now more than ever is the moment to stand with the families, first responders and survivors of September 11 and stand up for what we have worked so long for. This is how you can help:

DONATE. We need money to pay our amazing petitioners. We need money to pay a legal team. We need money to launch a full-scale PR campaign once the referendum is on the ballot.

TELL FAMILY MEMBERS, FIRST RESPONDERS and SURVIVORS. We have a Statement of Support on NYCCAN.ORG that every family member, first responder, and survivor is welcome to sign. We have already accumulated over 60 signatories in the last week. If you know someone who was directly affected and wants accountability, send them to NYCCAN.ORG. The more New York-based family members, first responders and survivors who sign on, the more City Council will hear from the constituents it simply can’t ignore.

TELL YOUR FRIENDS. Nothing works like word of mouth.

There is no better place than New York City and no better time than NOW to make a real investigation happen. Stand with us now.

All hell will break loose if

All hell will break loose if they don't approve this

They Will Get 22,000 More!

It will happen. It will also get the votes to pass...but I suspect there are criminals scheming on how to stop, undermine or derail it. I will hope for the best.

What I don't understand

What I don't understand is that their FAQ indicated that with 45,000 signatures it would go on the ballot no matter what. And now they have filed 52,000 signatures but would need an additional 30K more to enforce it...

from their FAQ:

QUOTE
Q: How many signatures are required for the referendum to be placed on the ballot?

The minimum requirement is 30,000 signatures. With this amount the petition can be filed with the City Clerk, who certifies its validity and submits it to City Council, which then votes on whether or not to place the referendum on the ballot. If an excess of 45,000 signatures is collected, the referendum will automatically be placed on the ballot, overruling City Council’s vote. NYCCAN aims to collect well above 45,000 signatures to ensure the referendum is placed on the ballot in the event of City Council rejecting the referendum or failing to vote on it within the required 60-day period.

I sent a question to Ted...

Edit:

Hi Jon,

In total we need at least 75,000 signatures because the City Clerk will challenge as many signatures as possible. It also works in two stages. The first 52,000 we submitted should suffice for the 30,000 needed to put it before City Council. We need an extra 15,000 then to override City Council, and we anticipate the City Clerk will be even more ruthless with the second batch, so we want at least double the required number of 15,000.

Now that we have filed the first 52,000 I will update the FAQs. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

Best Regards,

Ted

Do these people deserve to know how and why their loved ones were murdered? Do we deserve to know how and why 9/11 happened?

Valid signatures needed

52,000 submitted signatures should easily ensure that 30,000 are valid. It's unlikely that 45,000 of the 52,000 would be valid however, to be veto-proof, so if necessary more can be submitted later to clinch the access. That's my understanding.

This is good

I hope someone with solid diplomatic skills is working a person or two on the city council board.
