Denver Post Covers 9/11

The Denver Post gave a fair shake to Steve Jones' recent talk. Instead of calling him a "conspiracy theorist", the Post called him a "9/11 Theorist". The Post also covered both sides of the controlled demolition question.

"The standing ovation has finally died down, and Steven E. Jones, a soft-spoken physics professor, finds himself pinned against the stage by some of the enthusiastic fans who packed a University of Denver auditorium over the weekend to see him.

A man with a "Got truth?" T-shirt offers Jones a careful explanation for why the planes that crashed into the World Trade Center were operated by remote control. Another quizzes him about the size of the footprint of the Pentagon crash - too small, he says, for the Boeing 757 that "officially" smashed into it on Sept. 11, 2001.

"Can I just shake your hand?" a woman in a baggy red sweater asks Jones. "You're doing such important work."

If anything, Jones appears embarrassed by all the attention. Quiet and self-effacing, he's an unlikely hero for 9/11 conspiracy theorists of every stripe, but that's exactly what he's become.

A physicist whose background includes work on nuclear fusion, Jones was put on leave by Brigham Young University in September after publishing a paper saying that the twin towers couldn't have collapsed solely as a result of the planes that rammed the upper floors on Sept. 11. The paper theorizes that explosives planted inside the building must have been involved and that the buildings' collapse was essentially a controlled demolition.

Though Jones doesn't specify who he believes planted the charges, he concedes it would have had to be "an inside job" and likely would have included either very powerful figures on the American scene or entities inside the government.

"It's a thought that I admit has made me lose some sleep," Jones said.

Neither the 9/11 commission nor other extensive government reports have found any evidence of a secondary cause of the towers' collapse.

But Jones and his work reflect the mainstreaming of a movement that has defied the Bush administration's efforts to put it to rest and mystified people who have studied the events of that day closely: A startlingly large percentage of the population simply doesn't believe the official explanation for the towers' fall.

A national poll by the Scripps Survey Center at Ohio University conducted in the summer found that more than a third of people questioned believed the government either planned the attacks or could have stopped them but didn't.

That has worried government officials enough that the State Department recently published a report titled "The Top Sept. 11 Conspiracy Theories," an effort to debunk many of them. Separately, the National Institute of Standards and Technology - the government arm that investigated why the towers collapsed - published a seven-page document in September that attempted to answer some of the skeptics.

"We've watched it gain momentum," said Brent Blanchard, director of field operations for New Jersey-based Protec Documentation Services, which studies and monitors building demolitions.

"It's really been fascinating in a way," he said. "We've been able to watch the birth of the completely out-of-control allegations that could not be true for so many reasons."

Among the most basic of those, Blanchard said, is that there's a consensus that the collapse of the towers began at or near the point where the planes entered the buildings, rather than at the base, where traditional demolition occurs. That means that the explosives would have had to survive the initial crash and superheated fires until they were detonated - for nearly an hour in the case of one tower, 102 minutes in the case of the other.

"That's absolutely impossible," Blanchard said.

Beyond that, he said, planting the explosives in secret would have been an incredible logistical undertaking.

But to the growing Sept. 11 conspiracy movement, Jones provides what even advocates concede they had been lacking: a scientific approach backed up with meticulous data analysis and carefully devised experimental testing.

Jones - who has agreed to retire from BYU at the end of 2006 - said in an interview that his first doubts emerged when he saw a video of the collapse of World Trade Center 7, the 47- story office building that collapsed seven hours after the twin towers.

The collapse took just 6.5 seconds, only a half-second more than the free-fall time a ball bearing would take when dropped from that height. That simply couldn't take account of the normal resistance of steel columns and concrete that should have slowed the collapse by at least a few seconds, he said, but it did fit the model of a controlled demolition.

The physicist said that in more than a year of investigation, he found thermite residue in samples of dust found near ground zero and on one of the steel beams used in a Sept. 11 memorial. Thermite is a compound that, when ignited, produces incredibly high temperatures and is used by the military in incendiary grenades and to cut through steel.

Some government reports have also identified a significant presence of odd substances - including sulfur and zinc - and have noted that there is no obvious explanation for their presence. Jones said sulfur and zinc are part of a typical thermite fingerprint.

"I'm not willing to say yet that this is conclusive, but it does deserve explanation. What we're asking for is more study and a major investigation," said Jones, who has helped organize a group called Scholars for 9/11 Truth.

For many observers, Jones' work says less about a hidden conspiracy behind Sept. 11 than it does an unease with the event and what has followed.

"First of all, there is the event itself," said Christopher Farrell of the conservative think tank Judicial Watch. "It shocked, upset and offended people. Then after the fact, there were a number of contradictions or holes in the information available."

Blanchard is more blunt: "The government's done a lot of things in the last couple of years that has caused people to doubt their integrity about anything, including this stuff about WMD and other problems."

After Jones' lecture Saturday, a distinguished man with graying hair said he came because he had heard the physicist on the radio and thought it was remarkable that a scientist from so conservative a state as Utah would be a doubter.

"As you study this whole thing more, it seems to me there are a lot of valid questions," he said.

The man said he was a businessman and didn't want his name in the paper.

"I'm still in the business world," he said, "and I'd be ridiculed just for being here." "

It becomes more & more amazing to me. That the evil doers knew they could destroy. The WTC in front of our very eyes.
And knowing they could spin the story. So the vast majority of people would feel like this gentleman.

“it is possible to fool all the people all the time—when government and press cooperate.” George Seldes - "legendary investigative reporter"

BBC updates article about 9/11 hijackers!
We recently asked the FBI for a statement, and this is, as things stand, the closest thing we have to a definitive view: The FBI is confident that it has positively identified the nineteen hijackers responsible for the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Also, the 9/11 investigation was thoroughly reviewed by the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States and the House and Senate Joint Inquiry. Neither of these reviews ever raised the issue of doubt about the identity of the nineteen hijackers.

This is significant

because, contrary to what it's alleged to show, it actually is a reminder that the identities of the hijackers is a huge problem with the official story. Several of the identified men were also identified by photographs, so that saying "A man called Waleed Al Shehri" is a bit misleading! not only is he called that name, he has that face, and he lives!
If the US agencies responsible for investigating the attacks have found no reason to doubt the identities of the hijackers, this is further evidence that those agencies are complicit in the attacks and their cover-up.

"It's really been

"It's really been fascinating in a way," he said. "We've been able to watch the birth of the completely out-of-control allegations that could not be true for so many reasons."

OR... We've watched the awakening of Americans that don't believe everything they've been spoon fed from the media and the government, that are constantly caught in lies.

"Among the most basic of those, Blanchard said, is that there's a consensus that the collapse of the towers began at or near the point where the planes entered the buildings, rather than at the base, where traditional demolition occurs. That means that the explosives would have had to survive the initial crash and superheated fires until they were detonated - for nearly an hour in the case of one tower, 102 minutes in the case of the other.

"That's absolutely impossible," Blanchard said.

Beyond that, he said, planting the explosives in secret would have been an incredible logistical undertaking."

Since you weren't there, you don't know, do you, Mr. Blanchard? So that's why we need scientific experiments, not conjecture. The "explosives" in this case, occured BEFORE the planes hit. Thermate was working it's way through the 47 steel box columns. The Kerosene is not superheated... but it's interesting that he uses this term.

Blanchards, "that's absolutely impossible," is totally correct, because that's not what happened, was it??

Mr. Blanchard needs to say that the explosives planted in secret is more than his mind can handle. Just because something seems to be an incredible logistical undertaking, doesn't mean it can't be done.

It's hard for me to believe A LOT of things! For instance, why did some people in the WTC go BACK into thier offices after a FREAKING PLANE HITS THIER BUILDING, after being told to do so?? Answer? Whether i believe it or not is of no consequence. People told them to go back up, and they believed them.

You can tell me as many times as you like that it's ludicrous to believe someone blew those 3 buildings up as many times as you like... but sorry... i'm not going back up to the office. I just don't believe you.

they're stopping to think too early

They're always running into some conflict that they themselves have no explanation for, like "what happened to the passengers then?" and that's "it" for them, they throw it all away. But we've all come to the conclusion only later, by combining the whole picture. First you have to acknowledge that No1 was a lie, then No2 was a lie etc. etc., and then later one will wonder whether they didn't also ice the passengers somehow, and it seems more and more plausible. In other words, if WTC7 had not fallen, 90% of us wouldn't be here claiming the WTC twins were blown up - WTC7 was their big mistake, the achilles heel of a trillion dollar deep rabbit hole.

So Mr. Hoffman is forced to take hours away from more constructive pursuits to refute Blanchard's inane arguments. The criminal part is that Blanchard knows better. The smoking section of Hell is reserved for people like him.

Steven Jones

I think it's important to have a person in the truth movement that uses Steven Jones approach for diseminating the facts of 9/11. He presents it as theory that should be put to the test. I think helps some people with relatively open minds to take a look at the issue where they might be turned off by a more heavy handed approach. It also makes it more likely that he will get some press coverage from our timid but honest journalist. They don't want to stick there necks out there too far.

"We won't change what's going on in Washington until we change the people we send there." -- Wendy Wilde

1) Play fair

The American dream is for everyone. Let's stop unfair tax breaks for millionaires and giant industries. We need good jobs here in America. It's time to give our hard working families and small businesses a fair chance at success!

2) Do your homework

No Child Left Behind is taking money out of the classroom. Medicare Part D is costing seniors thousands of dollars. Homeland Security gutted FEMA and look what happened to New Orleans. Now the President wants to privatize our Social Security! It's time to put people in Congress who will do their homework and not support any more bad ideas.

3) Clean up after yourself

Minnesota children should be able to eat the fish they catch in our lakes, so why are we going backwards on environmental standards? We need a Congress with the courage to say "no" to George Bush. Wendy Wilde will consistently vote in favor of cleaning up our water and air, and support developing new, clean, affordable energy!

4) Always do your best

Our war in Iraq is creating more terrorists, not less. Lets reach out to other nations with positive support instead of war and destruction. America should set the highest standards for prisoner treatment, not the lowest. With new leadership in Congress we can win over our enemies and lead the world to peace.

5) Enough is enough

Enough with the partisan fighting and bickering. It's time for new leaders in Congress who will bring Americans together. Let's create a safe, prosperous, and free America for generations to come!

9/11 theorists are either silly or shrewd

They have been meeting in the basement of Hooked on Colfax bookstore for a year, piecing together facts they have learned about what they consider to be the biggest cover-up in American history.

They believe the federal government had a hand in the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

You think they're crazy? Some of their friends think so too....

....Members of include psychologists, lawyers, civil engineers, electrical engineers, an aerospace engineer, physicists and lots of people with doctorates and master's degrees in the sciences.

They're well-read people, and they understand why people want to dismiss them. They say people want to attack them as messengers because it's too disturbing to believe the government that is supposed to protect us would orchestrate the deaths of more than 3,000 Americans....

....The year-old group has an e-mail list of about 350 people. Among them is Earl Staelin, a 66-year-old civil litigator who lives in Littleton.

He started attending the meetings, held at 7 p.m. the third Friday of every month, after watching a film about 9/11 at his church, First Universalist Church of Denver.

He said the movie made convincing arguments why researchers believe the World Trade Center towers fell by controlled demolition. About an hour after the planes hit the towers, a series of explosions was seen and heard in floors below the crash areas, and then both towers came down, each in less than 10 seconds and in a free-fall manner consistent with planned demolitions.

"It's the kind of thing that is very disturbing if it's true," Staelin told me. "The responsible thing for us to do is ask questions, but it takes a long time to get familiar with all the information to understand what happened."

He said many of his friends who are engineers didn't believe the official story, that the towers fell because burning fuel from the planes caused the steel beams of the buildings to buckle. After he showed films, such as "9-11 Mysteries: Demolitions," they came to the same conclusion: demolition experts must have planned this in advance.

Why would the government do it? The explanations are plentiful, as is the evidence that groups such as this one, which exist throughout the nation, pore over and share on such websites as .

And for those who say these groups are wacko fringe groups, think again:....

I think everyone can agree that the campaign to get the information out there to the people has been a resounding success thus far, the results to every poll are a testament to that.

Is it time to take the next step and start wielding some of the power this movement has accumulated?....

....We certainly have the numbers on our side. Just look at any of the many online polls and you see the numbers... remember the Charlie Sheen poll? How about the 0wnage of the United 93 forums? Hell, check some net traffic reports or data on search terms, 9/11 Truth sites are some of the busiest out there. That's some serious numbers.

As important as the numbers is the motivation. I think this speaks for itself. Seriously, untold thousands of people burning and a distrubting tens of thousands of videos, spreading the word, protesting. Has any movement in history spread so far so fast?

There is something else we can bring to the table, something extremely powerful and something they want more than anything. The power to spread information like its never been spread before. The Truth Movement itself, its numbers and its widespread message, is living proof of this power. It is the ultimate grass roots movement and still gaining momentum all the time. This is internet power, and then some. I think it's time we harnessed this power and wielded it creatively and with devastating results...

Comments on this article

This Denver Post article did help to educate the public about the work of Steven E. Jones and we at Colorado 9/11 Visibility appreciated the front page placement as it is certainly the right time for major coverage of the work of the Scholars for 9/11 Truth. However, there were some shortcomings to the piece:

1) This article drew attention to the work of Dr. Jones but it failed to mention the other two speakers at the event, Kevin Barrett and Kevin Ryan. It was particularly unfortunate that the article failed to report on Kevin Ryan's scientific challenges to the NIST report. An article seeking to inform the public about the claims and counterclaims of this vitally important topic should have acknowledged Kevin Ryan's very thorough analysis.

2) The article quoted Brent Blanchard of Protec Documentation Services, a New Jersey firm that documents building demolitions. In his presentation, Kevin Ryan mentioned Brent Blanchard as a spokesman who often lacks substance but speaks with much "bluster", and these statements appear to fit that pattern. In the article, Blanchard gave two reasons why criticisms of the official story are "out-of-control allegations" that "could not be true".

a) The first was that controlled demolitions are initiated at the base of a building, whereas these collapses were initiated at the point of the airplane impacts. He failed to mention that WTC Building 7, which was not hit by a plane, fit the model of a conventional demolition perfectly, imploding neatly and accompanied by the traditional series of visible detonations from bottom to top. Regarding the twin towers, he failed to acknowledge considerable witness testimony of explosions well before the collapses, particularly in subfloor areas where victims were burned and extensive blast evidence was observed. Although the collapses (and the accompanying detonation sequence) did appear to progress in an uncharacteristic way, top to bottom, the previous basement explosions played a key role in the success of the demolition and it clearly merits further study.

b) Blanchard's second point was that pre-planted explosives could not have survived the plane crashes and subsequent fires without detonating prematurely. While this may be true of some explosives, it does not necessarily apply to thermite. Dr. Jones has spoken to this issue directly in his paper at "It is important to note that initiating the thermite reaction requires temperatures well above those achieved by burning jet fuel or office materials -- which is an advantage of using thermite charges over conventional monomolecular explosives such as TNT, RDX and PETN." In his talks in Denver and Boulder, Dr. Jones stated that in his own experiments, he was unsuccessful at igniting thermite with a propane torch.
