The head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention yesterday took a break from head-scratching over the salmonella that has felled people from coast to coast, walloped U.S. agriculture and made Americans worry their next salad might be their last.

Dr. Julie Gerberding had something more important to take care of - to wit, a bureacratic revenge killing.

All the rhetoric about health crises affecting Ground Zero workers post-9/11 has finally been put to a fact test.

And the data tell a different story.

For years, this page has been warning that the no-questions-asked benefits demanded by such as Sen. Hillary Clinton and Reps. Carolyn Maloney and Jerrold Nadler for anyone claiming a 9/11-related illness were an invitation to fraud.

Sure enough, that's the case. And the cost to taxpayers could run into the billions.

Lawyers defending the city against a mass lawsuit say that a detailed review of medical records for nearly 10,000 litigants (of the 40,000 people who worked at Ground Zero) shows that 30 percent only have nominal health issues.

And 306 have admitted openly that they have no past or current health problems.

'Journey for 9/11' supports rescuers

SAN DIEGO – His body is no stranger to punishment and grind. George Martin, after all, spent 14 years playing professional football. But at age 55, he put it to the test again. George Martin - Because people he considers to be true heroes are hurting.

The former New York Giants defensive end began walking across America eight months ago to raise money for rescue workers who rushed to ground zero on Sept. 11, 2001, and are now suffering myriad illnesses – including lung disease and post traumatic stress disorder.

One medical study showed that 70 percent of the 40,000 or so responders have suffered lung disease and other problems because of the dust and debris. One in five has lost lung capacity.

Some don't have adequate health or disability insurance, Martin said. Some were volunteers who took it upon themselves to go through the rubble and pitch in, however they could.

As President Bush's health chief, Tommy Thompson was criticized for not doing enough to help workers exposed to toxic debris from the Sept. 11 attacks at the World Trade Center.

Now, a company he leads has won a $11 million contract to treat some of those workers who responded to New York's ground zero....

Latest Study Of 9/11 Workers' Ills Reinforces Need For Fed $ Aid

A new study by Mount Sinai School of Medicine showing high rates of psychological distress among Ground Zero workers underscores the need for a strong federal response to the health impacts of the 9/11 attacks, several New York area lawmakers declared last week.

They said that of the more than 10,000 workers who participated in the study, 11 percent met criteria for probable Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), 8.8 percent had probable depression, 5 percent had probable panic disorder and 62 percent had substantial stress reaction.

According to Mount Sinai, the rate of PTSD among 9/11 responders is significantly greater than in the general population and is on a par with the rate experienced by Afghanistan war veterans, the lawmakers said.

Our mission is to help provide health care for the surviving rescue and recovery workers who rushed to Ground Zero after the 9-11 attacks, by raising a minimum of $10 Million.

One day an idea came to George Martin, executive, humanitarian and former New York Football Giants star. Many of those who had rushed to aid in the aftermath of 9-11 are sick with respiratory and other diseases that can cause permanent disability. Some have even lost their jobs and had no insurance. Mr. Martin wanted to help.

Mr. Martin will walk from the George Washington Bridge (NY) to the Golden Gate Bridge (CA), stopping along the way to promote various events in support of the mission.

The goal is to raise a minimum of $10 million for medical care for Ground Zero workers. Mr. Martin is looking to raise funds and, in addition, whatever amount he raises, participating Hospitals and Medical Care partners will provide a dollar-for-dollar match in medical services essentially doubling the amount of help care available for The Heroes of Ground Zero.

Court Clears Way for 9/11 Illness Lawsuit

A federal appeals court has refused to give New York City immunity from the lawsuits of thousands of city workers and construction laborers who say they now suffer from respiratory illnesses after they helped clean up ground zero in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

The lawsuits claim that the city failed to ensure that ground zero was a safe work place. High among the claims is the assertion that the city failed to enforce rules requiring workers to wear respirators while working amid the toxins and rubble.

Citing the unprecedented nature of the disaster, New York City and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, both defendants in the suits, have argued that they are entitled to immunity from the claims. The defendants say they cannot be required to pay out to the workers what could amount to billions of dollars in damages.
