“If a mandarinate ruled America, the recruiting committee on September 11 would have had to find someone like Cheney.” Washington Post author Barton Gellman in his book “Angler: The Cheney Vice Presidency”
Terrorism. Emergency plans. Political careers. The history of 9/11 can be written from many angles.
But whatever point of view is chosen, Dick Cheney is a central figure. “Principle is okay up to a certain point”, he once said, “but principle doesn´t do any good if you lose the nomination”. He´s surely an elusive character. Not less than Donald Rumsfeld, his close companion. Both of their lifes are inseperably bound with a dark side of recent American history. The core of the following story was originally told by the authors James Mann and Peter Dale Scott whose thorough research is deeply appreciated. Yet a lot of background information was added. Thus a bigger picture slowly took shape, showing a plan and its actors …

"The Defense Policy Board, chaired by Richard Perle played no small role in coordinating the various projects and think tanks, all determined to take us into war against Iraq. It wasn't too long before the dream of empire was brought closer to reality by the election of 2000 with Paul Wolfowitz, Richard Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld playing key roles in this accomplishment. The plan to promote an “American greatness” imperialistic foreign policy was now a distinct possibility. Iraq offered a great opportunity to prove their long-held theories. This opportunity was a consequence of the 9-11 disaster."

Here is the highly redacted intinerary of Pakistani ISI general Mahmud Ahmed, from his visit to Washington D.C. the week of 9/11. It was received last year via FOIA request by the 9/11 Working Group of Bloomington.
Apparently Ahmed's activity that week included meetings with the following people or groups.
Unidentified representative(s) from The State Department
Unidentified representative(s) from The National Security Council
Peter Rodman, PNAC member and former assistant to Henry Kissinger
The Direcor of the DIA (at the time - Vice Admiral Thomas R. Wilson, who was briefed on Able Danger in March 2001)
Senator Bob Graham, who with Porter Goss would lead the Joint Inquiry into 9/11
Rep.Porter Goss, who would lead Joint Inquiry with Graham and then become CIA Director
General Tommy Franks, CENTCOM Commander
Paul Wolfowtiz, PNAC member and Deputy Secretary of Defense
Douglas Feith, decribed by Tommy Franks as "the dumbest fucking guy on the planet" (according to Franks' autobiography)

Those who are interested in issues like widespread corruption of our elected officals by foreigners have no doubt followed the ex-FBI traslator turned whistle blower Sibel Edmonds saga for the past few years. Sibel has finally testified in court under oath about some of the things that she learned while working for the bureau. The testimony was in a court in Ohio about two weeks ago. A full transcription and a useful summary appear at http://www.bradblog.com/?p=7374. In short, she names a number of Congressmen including former Speaker Dennis Hastert who took money from Turkish lobbyists. She also identifies senior State Department and Pentagon officials who apparently did the same, including our friends Marc Grossman, Paul Wolfowitz, and Doug Feith. Interestingly, she claims that Grossman blew the cover of Valerie Plame’s company Brewster Jennings back in 2001, causing CIA to shut it down, so Robert Novak was not guilty of exposing the CIA cover mechanism. In another interview given a few weeks ago, Edmonds claims that CIA was working closely with al-Qaeda in the Balkans and continued to do so until 9/11.
In a blog entry about "International Terrorism", I mentioned the segment that Adam Curtis produced for his documentary film The Power of Nightmares. Here is the specific segment, featuring a familiar cast of characters telling us a familiar tale: "A terrible danger exists outside of our borders that we must confront and destroy because it seeks nothing less than the destruction of the Western way of life!" Remove the "Red Menace" from the Cold War fear paradigm, and insert "Radical Islam" and you have very quickly spanned Western foreign policy over the past 3 decades from the Neoconservative point of view. I might disagree with Ron Paul on some things, but when it comes to the Neocons, Paul nails+it.
So, when the same pack of fabricators are telling us a similar pack of lies about Iran, etc., why should anyone believe them?
I think they call it... recidivism.
In a speech titled "Paul Nitze's Legacy: For a New World", delivered on April 15, 2004 before the Aspen Institute, Paul Wolfowitz revealed that he and Donald Rumsfeld had lunch with members of the 9/11 Commission before the report was complete:
"When Don Rumsfeld and I had lunch with members of the 9/11 commission recently, one member asked what could they do to ensure that their report would make a real difference, that it would be read five or 10 years from now, instead of just filed away on a dusty shelf. I realize now that I gave them a pretty tall order. What I told them, basically, was to write something similar to George Kennan's long telegram or Paul Nitze's NSC-68. I told them that, rarely to my knowledge, has anyone other than historians with a specific interest in the subject, gone back to read the report of the Pearl Harbor Commission. NSC-68, on the other hand, is still studied in colleges and universities, including colleges for strategists like the war colleges of our military services or our National Defense University."
