Bush explains slow reaction to September 11 attacks

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Former President George W. Bush says his apparent lack of reaction to the first news of the September 11 2001 attacks was a conscious decision to project an aura of calm in a crisis.
In a rare interview with the National Geographic Channel, Bush reflects on what was going through his mind at the most dramatic moment of his presidency when he was informed that a second passenger jet had hit New York's World Trade Center.
Bush was visiting a Florida classroom and the incident, which was caught on TV film, and has often been used by critics to ridicule his apparently blank face.
"My first reaction was anger. Who the hell would do that to America? Then I immediately focused on the children, and the contrast between the attack and the innocence of children," Bush says in an excerpt of the interview shown to television writers on Thursday.
Bush said he could see the news media at the back of the classroom getting the news on their own cellphones "and it was like watching a silent movie."
Bush said he quickly realized that a lot of people beyond the classroom would be watching for his reaction.
"So I made the decision not to jump up immediately and leave the classroom. I didn't want to rattle the kids. I wanted to project a sense of calm," he said of his decision to remain seated and silent.
"I had been in enough crises to know that the first thing a leader has to do is to project calm," he added.
The National Geographic Channel will broadcast the hour-long interview on August 28 as part of a week of programs on the cable network called "Remembering 9/11" that mark the 10th anniversary of the attacks
.
The interview was recorded over two days in May, without any questions being submitted in advance, the channel said.
National Geographic said Bush gives "intimate details" of his thoughts and feelings in a way never seen before. Most of the interview is about the first minutes and hours of the day that Islamic militants hijacked four planes and crashed into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.
Executive producer and director Peter Schnall said Bush, who has adopted a low public profile since leaving office in January 2009, brought no notes to the interview.
"What you hear is the personal story of a man who also happened to be our president. Listening to him describe how he grappled with a sense of anger and frustration coupled with his personal mandate to lead our country through this devastating attack was incredibly powerful," Schnall said.
U.S. television networks are planning a slew of specials to mark the 10th anniversary of Sept. 11 attacks. Those on National Geographic also include a documentary on the continuing U.S. war on terror, and stories of ordinary people on Sept, 11 2001 called "Where Were You?"

Aw. . . the personal story of a man. . .
That just gives me a warm fuzzy. Doesn't it, guys? And from the good people at National Geographic. Oh, let me set my TIVO!
This c****r who ordered the EPA to announce the air was safe to breathe at Ground Zero, who lied about aluminum tubes and yellow cake, and WMD's, and Al Queada, etc, etc. . . doesn't deserve a forum for his lies.
Why would I to want to hear about how this treasonous, war criminal who is one step from the hangman's line, "grappled with a sense of anger and frustration"?
Wanna see anger and frustration? Visit the homes of dying first responders. Visit the families of veterans who have been killed for Halliburton. Visit 9/11 family survivors.
How infuriatingly insulting.
Guess I'll be watching baseball that night.
"I didn't want to rattle the kids"
Yes, here it comes. The full-on bullshit blitz to defend the indefensible.
"Who the hell would do that to America?"
That's what I want to know, George.

Like it would really have caused the kiddies panic attacks
for him to stand up and say, " I am sorry for interrupting Ms 'Teacher's name' and class, But one of my staff members has just informed me there is a very urgent matter that came up unexpectedly and requires me to attend to it right away. Sometimes when you are President, these types of unscheduled events happen at times. I have enjoyed my visit with you this morning, and I am very sorry I have to interrupt this visit and leave you on such short notice. However, it is important for our country that I attend to this matter as soon as possible. I'll instruct my staff to make sure they arrange another visit with you as soon as we can fit it in to my schedule. I hope this will help make up for me having to leave so unexpectedly this morning. Goodbye and keep up your good work."
Assuming he and his entourage were entirely clueless about the intended targets of the ongoing terrorist attacks, it would only have been logical to assume he could also be a target. Since his schedule that day was a matter of public record, lingering around the school could be putting the lives of the children and teachers in danger.
Not too different after all.

Here's the poster:
I puked a little myself today, if not from the 100 degree heat, then from this -- but I like this being a focal point. It stirs up the pot after 'dead Osama'.
Bush wanted to 'project calm' by reading about the pet goat while thousands were being killed. Despite Nat Geo's best effort, it's going to be hard to shine this turd.
What did Card really say to
What did Card really say to Bush in those critical moments? (Something like "Sir, Message from Vice, all's on track, sit tight and wait for further instructions"?).
Bush famously said he saw the first plane hit the tower on TV...on TWO occasions, *before* he went into the classroom, ie prior to the 2nd plane impacting. From where was he getting his live feed?
The Secret Service presidential detail is charged with protecting the president at all times, and with their own lives if necessary. They kept Bush there for a full 35 minutes while it was unknown how many more kamikaze planes were flying around the skies, and the *exact* location of the president at that exact time had been public (ie posted on the White House website) for 72 hours prior. Nobody in the Secret Service has answered the obvious question... Why they hell didn't they pull the president out of there ASAP? .. ..they didn't want to scare the kids... what a heap of steaming lies.!
By the Secret Service doing *nothing* in the obviously dire emergency that was unfolding, someone in a position of authority to whom the Secret Service agents answered must have given an order to "sit tight and await further instructions".
And National Geographic... this is not the first time they're weaseled on the 9/11 issue: a formerly great US institution has gone down the toilet.
What did he say is a good question
I highly doubt it was as reported, I think your version is more accurate bloggulator. My question is not only what did Card really say, but why was he there? I don't know very much about such things but is it common for a president's chief of staff to travel with him on routine photo ops? How common is it that the chief of staff travel around with the president at all for that matter? Perhaps its very common and they are just behind the scenes? I don't know, does this seem odd to anyone else? just thinking out loud I guess.
peace all

That Famous Photo
Would make a GREAT Truther T-Shirt if you put one of those "cartoon dialog bubbles" over Card with whatever you speculate he actually whispered into dubya's ear...
This should be posted here too..
So we can all watch him project his "calm in the storm"
What I would have preferred
I would have much preferred it if Moore had just seen fit to keep his mouth shut while that footage is running, and let the pictures--as the seconds and minutes of an unfolding crisis tick away--speak for themselves, rather than impose his own interpretation of what's going on through Bush's head. Some people hear that voice and automatically think, 'partisan Bush-hater' (honestly, one doesn't have to be pro-Bush to have that reaction) so that Moore's commentary can have the effect of getting in the way of what they could otherwise be seeing and thinking about.
Why Nat Geo Channel is frantically supporting the 9/11 OCT
The National Geographic Channel's majority shareholder is none other than sleazebag Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. In other words. it should, for all intents and purposes, be considered just another part of the Murdoch propaganda, war pushing media machine. The National Geographic magazine only has a minority ownership position in the National Geographic cable channel (around 25% IIRC)..

Secret Service on 9/11
...failed to remove the President from harm's way and allowed the Vice President to take charge of air defenses at this crucial 9:03 moment. According to Ruppert and other sources, the Secret Service takes rank over the DOD in times of a domestic attack, which 9:03 would be considered to be.
Could Cheney have implemented the stand-down in Florida just as he implemented the apparent stand-down of interceptors from the bunker? Via this Secret Service channel.
It would require the cooperation of Rumsfeld to not challenge him as well as the cooperation of people like Card and Ari Fleischer, who seemed to manage the Florida stand-down and even directed the President to not say anything yet.
These people were not projecting calm. They were projecting guilt.
They were projecting guilt.
Right-on RL. They were projecting guilt because they are guilty although I don't think Bush knew what was realy happening. I think he was just following orders. I don't think the NWO thugs let him in on what was realy happening. He was so stupid he probably would have let something slip. I could be wrong but I think this was Cheney's gig.
Lemons into lemonade?
Reportedly, Card's words to Bush were, 'The second tower has been hit. America is under attack.' (The implication being that to that point, the hit on the North Tower was thought to have possibly been just an accident--a result of, in Bush's words, 'one terrible pilot'.)
In my opinion, something very effective that was done in John Albanese's 9/11 video 'Everybody's Gotta Learn Sometime' was showing the footage of Bush in the classroom, and letting it run continuously, in real time, after Card whispers to him; then, as the footage ran, having the words that Card reportedly spoke to him--'America is under attack!'--pop up recurrently at the bottom of the screen. I thought it was an effective way of getting across the point of, 'There's something seriously wrong with this picture, folks!'
I wonder, could something like this be done with this dreadful attempt at misdirection by National Geographic--to try to make some lemonade out of this lemon? I mean something like, run the footage of Bush in the classroom, as he just sits there and as the Secret Service men just stand there, and simultaneously juxtapose Bush's words from this interview explaining what happened, what was going through his mind and such. I think the result might be to show the account he is giving now as at variance with the scene as it actually unfolded. Remember, this guy left office with the reputation as one of the worst eff-ing liars in U.S. history. As much help as the media give him, that well-earned reputation can still be something that works in our favor.
Gosh,
it sure took them a long time to learn him that.
Looks like we should have people on the ground
to ensure that the 9/11 truth message is heard loud and clear!

This particular 9/11 anomaly
This particular 9/11 anomaly is one of the most glaringly obvious.
Further points: for someone so concerned for the children, Bush certainly seems irresponsible in remaining at the school, on a pre-announced visit, on live TV.
As regards 'anger and frustration': to me, he looks worried and furtive.
David Ray Griffin did a thorough job of exposing the official classroom story for the pile of BS that it is. I made the article into a booklet which will print onto A4. Get it from www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=ac1039fd00817eecd2db6fb9a8902bda
