Everyone knows about the military-industrial complex, which, in his farewell address, President Eisenhower warned had the potential to “endanger our liberties or democratic process” but have you heard of the “Deep State?”
Mike Lofgren, a former GOP congressional staff member with the powerful House and Senate Budget Committees, joins Bill to talk about what he calls the Deep State, a hybrid of corporate America and the national security state, which is “out of control” and “unconstrained.” In it, Lofgren says, elected and unelected figures collude to protect and serve powerful vested interests. “It is … the red thread that runs through the history of the last three decades. It is how we had deregulation, financialization of the economy, the Wall Street bust, the erosion or our civil liberties and perpetual war,” Lofgren tells Bill.
Lofgren says the Deep State’s heart lies in Washington, DC, but its tentacles reach out to Wall Street, which Lofgren describes as “the ultimate backstop to the whole operation,” Silicon Valley and over 400,000 contractors, private citizens who have top-secret security clearances. Like any other bureaucracy, it’s groupthink that drives the Deep State.

There is the visible government situated around the Mall in Washington, and then there is another, more shadowy, more indefinable government that is not explained in Civics 101 or observable to tourists at the White House or the Capitol. The former is traditional Washington partisan politics: the tip of the iceberg that a public watching C-SPAN sees daily and which is theoretically controllable via elections. The subsurface part of the iceberg I shall call the Deep State, which operates according to its own compass heading regardless of who is formally in power. [1]

A Great Story Packaged By A PR Guy
Lofgren's personal discovery of the "Deep State" is a great story and the essay on BillMoyers.com is well worth perusing. Lofgren's interview by Moyers is also an interesting video that will certainly move some of Moyer's viewers toward a more expansive understanding of the world we live in. However, don't hope too much to be able to post to Billmoyers.com about this article. As documented in my post here on 911blogger "When Censorship Is Both Good News and Bad News," Moyers' background as a PR person comes to the surface in the way he handles Lofgren and the "Deep State" issue. Moyer's denies any "conspiracy theory" connections in the intro to the video and the website doesn't accept much in the way of posts from people with an awareness of what happened on 9/11. I believe that this is because Mr. Moyers doesn't want 9/11 to get in the way of Lofgren's story. And, I suspect that Bill isn't into 9/11 because it is far too close to his own involvement with the 20th century's biggest American political conspiracy, the assassination of JFK. (Moyers reportedly ordered the plexiglass suntop on Kennedy's car to be taken off before the parade through Dallas. See the book "The Man Who Killed JFK: The Case Against LBJ" for the best explanation I've ever seen for JFK's assassination.) In spite of Moyers' distortions, enjoy Lofgren's story for the personal awakening that it represents and for the opening to larger stories that it portends.
Peter Dale Scott
Bill Moyers should have Peter Dale Scott on to explain Deep State Politics. He wrote the book and coined the phrase, as I recall.

'Nearly all recent accounts of Mossadeq’s overthrow treat it as a covert intelligence operation, with the oil cartel (when mentioned at all) playing a subservient role. However the chronology, and above all the belated approval from Eisenhower, suggest that it was CIA that came belatedly in 1953 to assist an earlier oil cartel operation, rather than vice versa. Moyers, Mussolini and the Mainstream Media....
Bill Moyers is yet another in a long line of Neville Chamberlain types, shilling for the status quo and its maintenance. To this end, the powers-that-be fashion and filter their messaging via left, right and centrist media mouthpieces, sequentially and simultaneously, in order to appeal to the majority of the media-managed masses.
9/11 clearly remains a major, thorny and ongoing problem for the corporate media and their significant starring propagandists - for examples, Noam Chomsky, Amy Goodman and Rachel Maddow on the left, to Glenn Beck, Bill O'Reilly and Ann Coulter on the right, and everyone in between. They all have one common and accusatory Pavlovian verbal reaction when confronted with any aspect of 9/11 (there are thousands) that fail to support the official storyline: "Crazy conspiracy theorists". The sad part of this, is that it appears that the US mainstream media (and that of most other industrialized nations) are seemingly incapable of - and equally significantly, unwilling to take part in - a rational discussion and analysis of 9/11, the most significant event in post WWII history. Instead, they gloss over and evade the issue via the liberal use of infantile ad hominems, red herrings and superficial platitudes, or even banning the subject altogether in discussion forums - anyone recall the Huffington Post?
To quote one of the arch offenders in his treatment of 9/11, Noam Chomsky has lived up to his own analysis of the media to a remarkable degree of accuracy:
"The smart way to keep people passive and obedient is to strictly limit the spectrum of acceptable opinion, but allow very lively debate within that spectrum - even encourage the more critical and dissident views. That gives people the sense that there's free thinking going on, while all the time the presuppositions of the system are being reinforced by the limits put on the range of the debate."
In their flagrant and cowardly dereliction of their duty to inform the citizenry, the corporate media and its talking heads are aiding, abetting, harboring and protecting the 9/11 perpetrators by misleading and misinforming their readership, listenership, and viewership. If the majority of the good American people knew just 10% of the damning facts of 9/11 which have been verified by even the government's own agencies and departments, let alone what the 9/11 Truth Community has discovered independently, there would be hell to pay. Heads would undoubtedly roll by the hundreds - famous ones - for accessory before and after the fact to the crimes 9/11, at the least. And Bill Moyers and the army of "waiters for the élite", know it - and their own livelihoods and access (perhaps even liberty or lives) depend on keeping mum.
As an afterthought, if Deep State is a hybrid of the "National Security State' and "Corporate America", this sounds like the archetypal example of what Benito Mussolini was aiming at during WWII: He defined "fascism" as being"the merging of state and corporate power". It appears you don't require a "dictator", restrictions of movement, and "tanks in the streets" etc. etc. to embrace fascism - all that's required is a mollified and unaware public, tacit threats, and a lots of surveillance. If such was one of the purposes of 9/11, then it succeeded beyond the wildest dreams of its most likely architects.

Where is the Context?
Where is the context? Even though I hate football, I was fascinated by John Madden and his yellow pencil overlays on the screen. I find it hard to hate someone who I consider oafish as he bests my perception of what I thought I had just seen in the game despite my 20/20 vision and years of study of psychology and 19th century German philosophy. Madden contextualizes the game.
Moyers acts somewhat nonplused while discussing the topic of The Deep State while it is intrinsically related to a special he did in 1987 called The Secret Government: The Constitution in Crisis . Far too often have we seen the lack of contextualizing and any semblance of institutional memory in the media as is evinced here. Missing too, is any mention of the work of the poet and Canadian diplomat Peter Dale Scott. Just as it is necessary to contextualize the success of the Beatles by way of mentioning heavy influences like the harmonies of The Everly Brothers, the exuberance of Little Richard and the deftness of their manager, an alert shop keeper, Brian Epstein it is also necessary to contextualize the whole construct of The Deep State and just what it represents. Although Scott credits the Turks fully with the apperception of The Deep State, it is Scott who introduced the construct in the West. Long suffering members of the American electorate have known of the tendency for the corruption of power: we speak of smoke filled rooms, where last minute deals are made, crony capitalism, pork and kickbacks as examples of ways that power corrupts; this is what Scott latched onto and labeled Deep Politics and which his latter thinking matured into the construct of The Deep State. Not mentioned in Moyer's expose above is The Susurluk Scandal, the sine qua non for understanding Deep State politics and the event that gave the Turks the effulgent glimpse of just how deep corruption goes. In November 1996 a traffic accident occured in Susurluk near the city of Balikesir, in which Abdullah Çatlı, a former ultra-rightist militant wanted by police for multiple murders and drug trafficking; Huseyin Kocadağ, a senior police official; and beauty queen Gonca Us are killed and Sedat Bucak, a Parliament deputy from the DYP is injured.* The "take home" is that they are all in on it.

Big money was being sent to the Persian Gulf region in 2001
It is interesting that Mike Lofgren says large amounts of money being sent to the Persian Gulf region in 2001, shortly after we went into Afghanistan, is what made him question what was going on. He says he said to himself "Saddam Hussein did not bring down the Twin Towers".
Many have talked about a shadow government for many years now, but it is really just the erosion of principle in our government, in a systemic way, that has given us an overall corrupt and hence hidden in plain sight "Deep State". It was certainly an evolution as it takes time for the greedy and unprincipled to corrupt things. Something is needed to bring things back to center. I too have wondered to myself about a certain level of discord within the Deep State being a possibility for that to occur. However, the awareness of the population and asking of those awkward questions. that Mike talks about being able to throw a wrench in the works, can also play a part. This is the big reason it is important to bring up the evidence that the official reports on 911 don't reflect reality and to insist on a re-investigation of what occurred. Even if a new investigation is never realized the demand for it based on evidence will apply pressure to bring things back to center. Shining light on bullshit will make the bullshitters think twice before doing whatever they want again.
This is also another reason for all of us to give a small amount each month ($2.50 per month is just $30 per year) to an organization like AE911Truth, to keep niggling at the deceivers and maintain a pressure on them. It is a way of keeping a balance and is really a necessity, like giving a small but consistent donation to the church. In my opinion, AE911Truth is presently the only organization capable of spearheading this issue and maintaining that pressure. If we don't pool our small individual resources it is a case of united we stand divided we fall.

Nice post, Joe, I watched that thing down to the nub! While there aren't a lot of surprises for people on this blog, it is a great refresher and would make a great teaching tool. The October Surprise was mentioned in the video; I was just speaking with a school teacher with a degree in history yesterday about the October Surprise and how, like Nixon, Carter was manipulated out of office and her reply was that he did that to himself for failing to control interest rates. It is a struggle speaking with people whose umwelt is so pedestrian; they think that Realpolitk never plays into anything. I have been deeply studying WWII and its aftermath. Did you know that the Dresden bombing was greenlit after and these are the words they used, "the baby killing option" was OK'd but it was just the white hates vs the black hats we are told.
