Wire Tapping, Like Everything, Justified By 9/11
During his January 25 speech at the headquarters of the National Security Agency (NSA), President Bush repeated the debunked claim -- previously articulated by Vice President Dick Cheney and Gen. Michael V. Hayden, a deputy director for national intelligence and former head of the NSA -- that had the Bush administration's warrantless domestic spying program been in place before the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, the NSA might have identified some of the hijackers in the United States. When several media outlets uncritically reported this claim -- as advanced by Hayden -- Media Matters for America noted that the 9-11 Commission and congressional investigators reportedly reached a very different conclusion: that the Bush administration had information on two of the 9-11 hijackers well over a year before the attacks occurred, and it was primarily bureaucratic problems -- rather than a lack of information -- that were responsible for the security breakdown.

A federal judge has ordered the government to give admitted terrorist conspirator Zacarias Moussaoui's defense team documents describing what officials knew before Sept. 11, 2001, about al-Qaida threats and some of its hijackers.
With a trial to determine Moussaoui's sentence set to begin next month, U.S. District Judge Leonie Brinkema granted part of a Jan. 20 defense motion for documents without waiting for the government's response.
"Several of the categories of information are so critical to the issues in this case that the court can address some of the requests without a response," Brinkema wrote. "Moreover, given the increasingly shortening time before the start of the trial, discovery issues must be resolved quickly."

The Department of Defense (DOD) has scheduled its second major, three-day exercise to combat nuclear terrorism, this time in the Charleston, South Caroline area. I don’t know about you, but I didn’t know Charleston had a nuclear terror problem, shades of Sept. 11, 2001, the day on which some six drills were going, enough to distract anybody from doing anything when the drills went real.

But the exercise and the military’s Joint Task Force-Civil Support will be hosted (excuse me again) . . . headquartered at Fort Monroe, Virginia. And the three-day drill (which could go real, n'est-ce pas?) is for commanders and representatives of other federal agencies that would be involved in (catch this) the consequences of a 10-megaton nuclear blast, enough to decimate an American city.

The Federal General Accounting Office estimates that between 250,000 and 400,000 people lived, worked or went to school, in the ground zero vicinity at the time of the world trade center attacks.
There were 40,000 to 50,000 rescue workers, firefighters, volunteer firefighters, EMS, police and construction workers who worked on the "pile" for some length of time...of 16,000 rescue workers, not firefighters participating in a Mount Sinai Hospital study about half are sick with World Trade Center related diseases. At least three emergency workers have died.
