Gravel considering Obama primary challenge, calls for new 9/11 investigation

Former Alaska Senator and 2008 Democratic presidential candidate Mike Gravel told The Daily Caller in an exclusive interview that he is mulling a primary challenge to President Barack Obama in 2012.

In an e-mail exchange arranged by his daughter, TheDC asked Gravel if he was considering a run for president in 2012 and if he is specifically considering a primary challenge to President Obama. He replied, “Both are possible.”

Progressives who view President Obama’s recent tax compromise with Republican leadership as a betrayal have suggested in recent days that a primary challenge to Obama in 2012 is not unimaginable. TheDC reported that some progressives have been floating names like Howard Dean, Russ Feingold, and even actor George Clooney as possible contenders.

Gravel, who served in the Senate from 1969 to 1980, also stated that he believes that members of the U.S. government “may certainly have participated with the obviously known perpetrators” of the September 11th attacks. “Obviously an act that has triggered three wars, Afghan, Iraqi and the continuing War on Terror, should be extensively investigated”, Gravel continued, “which was not done and which the government avoids addressing.”

Gravel, who somewhat famously read the Pentagon Papers into the congressional record, also praised WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange as a modern day Daniel Ellsberg. “The revelations of Wikileaks are not an endangerment to American troops in our far flung Empire, but they truly are an embarrassment to America’s political leadership today,” Gravel said.

Read the full transcript of TheDC’s interview below:

TheDC: You’re famous for reading the Pentagon Papers into the congressional record. Do you see Julian Assange as a modern day Daniel Ellsberg?

Mike Gravel (MG): Yes, in point of fact, this is the most significant effort to save democracy (which is slowly being eclipsed by the Military Industrial Complex) since the release of the Pentagon Papers.  The revelations of Wikileaks are not an endangerment to American troops in our far-flung Empire, but they truly are an embarrassment to America’s political leadership today.  The response of this leadership is merely an effort to hide their malfeasance and to protect their reputations.

TheDC: You’ve called for an investigation into 9/11. Do you think the government was behind the attacks?

MG: Individuals in and out of government may certainly have participated with the obviously known perpetrators of this dastardly act. Suspicions abound over the analysis presented by government.  Obviously an act that has triggered three wars, Afghan, Iraqi and the continuing War on Terror, should be extensively investigated which was not done and which the government avoids addressing.

TheDC: Are you considering another run for president in 2012? Would you consider a primary challenge against President Obama?

MG: Both are possible.

TheDC: You’ve praised Sarah Palin in the past. Do you think she could beat Obama in 2012?

MG: I never praised Palin.  What I’ve said and continue to believe is that she is a very talented politician.  Policy wise and intellectually, I think she leaves a great deal to be desired.  I don’t think she could beat Obama.

TheDC: What political cause would prompt you to chain yourself to the White House fence?

MG: The shortcomings of Democracy will not be solved by protests.  The solutions are not with chaining oneself to a fence.  The shortcomings will be solved by empowering the People to make laws.  The central power of government is law making.  Without this power the People can only protest and under the structure of representative government today that changes very little.  I will continue my efforts with the National Initiative which is the best approach in this regard.

The ballot initiative(s) are a work in progress,

and no where near ready for prime time.

Let's get all of our ducks lined up and on the cart with the cart hitched to the horse before we take this public (any more than it already has been, that is).

OK?

Personally, I'd love to see Sen. Gravel and Bob Bowman give Mr. Obama a run for his money in 2012.

Cheers!

The truth shall set us free. Love is the only way forward.

"Obviously known perpetrators"???????????

who would that be Mike? Siverstein? the 5 dancing mossad punks?

the companies in charge of airport security? WTC security?

whoever ordered the stand down?

there is absolutely zero evidence that any person of the muslim faith was even on the planes.

Lets end the crusades already. One world, one love.

The real perpetraitors WILL be found out in the coming investigation. There will be hangings.

Or, bring back the guillotine. Now THERE's some "must see tv"

It is difficult to take this seriously . . .

. . . if the name George Clooney appears as a possible primary candidate.

But then again, could he be MORE of a tool than the Big "O"??? Hmmmm. . .

"LOONEY FOR CLOONEY!"
"LOONEY FOR CLOONEY!"

Speaking of ducks in a row...

I've heard that Cindy Sheehan may run on the socialist party ticket.

Presumably Nader will run again as an independent. Perhaps McKinney for the Green Party. Ron Paul will probably try to capture the Republican nomination only to be bamboozled by Sarah Palin and other lunatics, who in turn will be held up as a scarecrow to the masses. Cue Michael Moore and Normon Solomon begging voters to give Obama one more chance, lest the fruitcake moose killer get her hands on the doomsday button.

This is a good recipe for another four hellish years under the Republicrats. If this occurs, there is a very good chance that WWIII will erupt -- if it hasn't already by that time. Israel will only wait so long before attacking Iran.

It is long past past time that "progressives" and "libertarians" join forces and create a real third party challenge. This would entail putting aside profound differences in theories of political economy in the name of ending the wars and abolishing hopelessly corrupt financial institutions, whether the FED or Monsanto. We must remember that economics, the "dismal science", is not scientific at all. It's the modern day equivalent of alchemy, albeit much more useful to the ruling class. Libertarians must recognize that corporate personhood is antithetical to the rights of real people (FYI, Adam Smith and Thomas Jefferson would have been appalled at the notion of corporations-as-people). Socialists must recognize that the state can be just as oppressive as free market capitalism.

I am of the opinion that you can't have libertarianism without socialism, and that you can't have socialism without libertarianism. To those who regard this as a contradiction or oxymoron, study indigenous societies.

"Respect for the individual, which Radin lists first as an aboriginal attribute, deserves to be emphasized, today, in an era that rejects the collective as destructive of individuality on the one hand, and yet, in an orgy of pure egotism, has actually destroyed all the ego boundaries of free-floating, isolated, and atomised individuals on the other. A strong collectivity may be even more supportive of the individual as close studies of certain aboriginal societies reveal, than a 'free market' society with its emphasis on an egoistic, but impoverished, self"
-Bookchin, Remaking Society, p. 48]

It's time for a little humility on both sides. To idolize property is an affront to the message of Jesus; it is the worship of Mammon. "The wicked in his pride doth persecute the poor: let them be taken in the devices that they have imagined." Psalms 10:2

To allow individual rights to be swallowed in the name of the collective (communism) is to destroy individual agency.

The key is to recognize that social and individual responsibility go hand in hand.

We must put aside our dogmas and embrace a modicum of common sense. To do otherwise is to place messy, unproven political theories over the survival of the human race. Which is insane.

The Michael Moores and Limousine liberals must make a clean break from the Democratic Party. The libertarians must find common cause with the misnamed "radical left" -- whose views (universal health care, living wages, sane tax policy etc.) represent those of the majority of the population. Is "liberty" merely the ability to accrue wealth, or might it involve strange concepts like the ability to live with dignity? To have a roof over one's head and food to eat and access to medical care?

"Come together", as John Lennon wrote. Sheehan, McKinney, Nader; progressive celebrities like Tim Robbins and Sean Penn; only- semi-corrupted politicians like Gravel and Kucinich and Paul; intellectual giants like Chomsky and Klein and Hedges; libertarian scholars like Greenwald and (what the Hell) Alex Jones. We have all the ingredients but a dysfunctional kitchen. COME TOGETHER and create a viable third party movement rather than splinter into bickering factions.

This may be the only hope to stave off Armageddon.

Truth be told, I have little or no faith in voting.

"In the hands of a people whose education has been willfully neglected, the ballot is a cunning swindle benefitting only the united barons of industry, trade and property." --Daniel Guérin

"Our democracy is but a name. We vote? What does that mean? It means that we choose between two bodies of real, though not avowed, autocrats, We choose between Tweedledum and Tweedledee."
- Hellen Keller

Either we change these dynamics or we're doomed.

If all else fails -- or perhaps as a simple starting point -- we must organize a mass movement completely independent of mainstream politics as a whole. From there, figureheads and delegates can emerge. This movement must also be international in character. I'm a Canadian. I live one hour from the border. US corporations own half my country but I cannot vote in US elections. All I have is a tiny soapbox on the internet. Corporations are global, even if most of their headquarters lie in the US, Britain and Tel Aviv. We must become global, even we disdain the concept of globalism.

I honestly believe that we only have about a decade before the black flower of fascism fully blooms.

Now is the time. If we wait another two years it will be too late.

In the words of Bakunin -- the great anarchist philosopher who predicted both the tyrannical "red bureaucracy" of The Soviet Union and the "technocratic elite" of capitalist nations...

"By striving to do the impossible, man has always achieved what is possible."

- End Rant.

Please, everyone, read Danse's comment above

Thanks (again) for the thoughtfulness and completeness of your comment, Danse.

The key is to recognize that social and individual responsibility go hand in hand.

I learned this from my parents, in church (First Methodist), in the Boy Scouts and meditating on a hill when I was 11, among other places.

A society is a first a group of individuals, everything must flow from that.

We really need to start thinking about the next phase and build on the growing global nature of our movement, I had been planning on writing a blog here to announce a blog dedicated to this and will soon, but might as well start it off here (although I have yet to post a single thing there, perhaps I could just use your comment to kick it off...what do you think?)

We are the leaders we have been waiting for

You are right, Scott, now is the time.

I should post a blog announcing this blog formally by next Sunday night.

Any and all input is welcome, feel free to contact me through this site or through the blog.

We are all brothers and sisters, let's work together to create the world we want to live in now.

The truth shall set us free. Love is the only way forward.

Danse, would you mind if I

Danse, would you mind if I copy/pasted your comment, with your name along with, on FB? Much to think about, and well presented...succinctly. You, sir, are a fine communicator. You've made your name public, as Scott Noble, correct? So my dropping it into another thread would be okay with you, because saying Danse might leave a reader confused. I often do drop whole texts from us in the Truth Movement, knowing that we all are about making sure the word gets out, and not particularly about capitalizing on who said what. Just by letting that be known, when I paste a link, or what ever words coming from us, the Truth Movement, the anti-Truth people can accuse us of being gypsies, crooks and thieves, but when you merely take a look at has taken place, even look a little, the holes in the government version of reality is always a given. They lie more than they tell the truth. Also, I believe I have dropped your films' links into FB.

ok scott

Let's find an opportunity to talk more about this. You are not alone in thinking these thoughts. A new political movement is necessary in Canada as well as the US. As you say, we may not have much time.

thanks graeme

I'll send you an email.

I think there is a large

I think there is a large enough percentage of Americans that know what has happened, and don't speak of it much. How could these deniers be so absolutely nuts to keep hanging on to the ridiculous government fairytale, with villains and saviors and leaders, and Jesus, and gut feelings and so much crap fed to us, that I don't know how an actual cartoon with such a story, could be anything but laughable to a junior high school student with a credit in physics.

Anyway, what I wanted to mention, is that we have enough people that must feel strongly about finding out for sure what the #$@% happened, enough to want t a new investigation. So, with that as part of his daring exposes, being his platform inviting all to which anyone can see clearly. But, with the media gatekeepers, who knows if he'd have a chance for an honest run.

But, Bush exploited the Christian community as being a good Christian, while he bacame one of the worst war criminals in history. WE used depleted uranium in Iraq for one, WMDs? WE used them on Iraqis. WE as a country did the war of aggression upon an innocent country. George W. Bush, while profitting off of the illegal, dishonest, war, and claiming absolute power internationally, in the name of "Fighting terrorism" created one of the most terrorist operations going, while lying to the American people, supposedly fighting and oppressing all of humanity, lest be called a "terrorist".

Well, we have enough people to carry a Truth party, when you think of the scoundrel Bush who wrangled beyond the insufficient cheating done, and exploited the Christian community. Now is a good time to take advantage of that similar percentage of folks that know reality, as we know it. The media's barriers would have to be overcome some way though. Whaat an interesting prospect for humanity even. What an enormous challenge even if we do have that crucial percentage number. Maybe in researching the liklihood of success, in a campaign run, do another study, of people voting anonymously to determine who has the most credibility in presenting both governemnt version vs. Truth version. Then a more precise determinant in success ratios of running. The last time I heard, the numbers calling BS on the government was about 108 million comes to mind. I'll have to come back with that.

This fine work will benefit us the Truth movement, greatly...

Grassroots effort at MyFDL to organize a primary challenge

See diaries by jeffroby on the Dump Obama subject, and many recent diaries by themalcontent with a somewhat similar theme, though he eschews the phrase "Dump Obama". Also, yours truly has written on the subject. These are at my.firedoglake.com.

There's been precious little organizing that I'm aware of for a populist, left/right alliance. This happens on certain issues, but there's no broad-based, electoral organization being developed. Maybe the progressiveradionetwork.com will spawn such an effort, some day. They are open to various political ideologies, and generally avoid demonization of political opponents.

As for the demonization that has occurred, which makes a populist party arising that would eclipse both Dems and Repubs difficult, I suspect that there are Mockingbird types who work to prevent exactly that. See my diary Call for investigation of Left HATEKeepers (and Right HATEKeepers, too)

I think ones like Naomi Wolf

I think ones like Naomi Wolf here might help put this idea into motion. We all better start making the fact available for all.

I have

a love/hate relationship with libertarians, but if there needs to be an alliance, I'm for it. Thing is I'm not American, I have plenty of strife to deal with about the escalating local politics.

In some ways, we are in a worse state than the Americans, because here in NL, we live under a truly suffocating and unique bureaucratic Big Brother environment, also due to 9/11. It's hard to breathe. We are at the forefront of totalitarian control. Our current regime is an exponent of the totalitarian philosophy, and its rise to the halls of power was facilitated, mainly, by exploiting xenophobia.

As totalitarianism, jingoism and the subversion of the media has leapt over to the European continent, the abuse of Islamic extremism to further political ends will leap over to yours. The CIA funded seed money for the "Ground Zero Mosque" is a dire warning..
