ST. PAUL, MN—Democracy Now! host Amy Goodman was unlawfully arrested in downtown St. Paul, Minnesota at approximately 5 p.m. local time. Police violently manhandled Goodman, yanking her arm, as they arrested her. Video of her arrest can be seen here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oYjyvkR0bGQ

Goodman was arrested while attempting to free two Democracy Now! producers who were being unlawfully detained. They are Sharif Abdel Kouddous and Nicole Salazar. Kouddous and Salazar were arrested while they carried out their journalistic duties in covering street demonstrations at the Republican National Convention. Goodman's crime appears to have been defending her colleagues and the freedom of the press.

Ramsey County Sheriff Bob Fletcher told Democracy Now! that Kouddous and Salazar were being arrested on suspicion of rioting. They are currently being held at the Ramsey County jail in St. Paul.

Democracy Now! is calling on all journalists and concerned citizens to call the office of Mayor Chris Coleman and the Ramsey County Jail and demand the immediate release of Goodman, Kouddous and Salazar. These calls can be directed to: Chris Rider from Mayor Coleman's office at 651-266-8535 and the Ramsey County Jail at 651-266-9350 (press extension 0).

Democracy Now! stands by Goodman, Kouddous and Salazar and condemns this action by Twin Cities law enforcement as a clear violation of the freedom of the press and the First Amendment rights of these journalists.

During the demonstration in which they were arrested law enforcement officers used pepper spray, rubber bullets, concussion grenades and excessive force. Several dozen others were also arrested during this action.

Amy Goodman is one of the most well-known and well-respected journalists in the United States. She has received journalism's top honors for her reporting and has a distinguished reputation of bravery and courage. The arrest of Goodman, Kouddous and Salazar is a transparent attempt to intimidate journalists from the nation's leading independent news outlet.

Democracy Now! is a nationally syndicated public TV and radio program that airs on over 700 radio and TV stations across the US and the globe.

I'm thinking this is a wake up call for Amy, unless of course it was staged for her since shes being seen more and more as a gatekeeper.
The Ford Foundation would like this to be sure. We'll have to see what her reactions are after incarceration. She'd gone a longtime without demanding anything for nearly 3000 murdered on 911. but had Mike Gravel on for what turned out to be a failed ballot initiative attempt (still haven't figured that out)
It is criminal to have to create a ballot for consideration when a real investigation, including chemical forensic analysis was never done. There were explosives in the buildings (ae911truth.org) case closed. We have murderers running around somewhere we need to find them.

Goodman's arbitrary arrest is par the course for the poor and people of color. What's changing is that the middle class is now coming under attack. The modern police state was erected in response to the turmoil of the 60's and beyond, which scared the bejeesus out of LBJ and later NIxon. In a report for the Trilateral Commission, Samuel Huntingdon called it an "excess of democracy". What most people view as great leaps forward (eg the civil rights movement) are regarded as terrifying expressions of the "mob" by ruling elites. The phony war on drugs was a means of nationalizing and militarizing the police in order control this "threat": the threat of the "Underclass", otherwise known as "social dynamite".

If you look at the etymology of the word "beat", you find that it was an area of land that of a certain size that could be be “patrolled” by “pat-rollers”– whose job it was to police and deal with slaves, particularly escaped ones.

"Policing" was originally the job of slave-holders and strikebreakers like the Pinkerton Detective Agency, who murdered and mutilated unruly workers. Occasionally (in fact, rather frequently) the state itself was brought to bear against expressions of lower class power. The 20th C has seen the process nationalized, refined, and made more "friendly" ie less overtly brutal. What was it Neil Young said in "Keep on Rockin' in the Free World"? "We have a kindler, gentler machine gun hand".

However, it would be a mistake to term what is currently happening "fascism". If we were living in a fascist society Goodman would already have a bullet in her head. Call it "neo-fascism" or "friendly fascism", but it's important to stress that people in our society still have certain rights which can be enforced through popular outrage, if not the courts. Fear is what they want (hence the darth vator uniforms). We have to stand tall.

Ultimately the only way of stopping these abuses is proper democratic control of the police. Obviously this is not possible in a state bearing only the formal trappings of democracy. Judges known damn well who keeps the blood money flowing, which is why police are hardly ever disciplined no matter outrageous their crimes.

When I see this I have no thoughts of whether or not she's covered 9/11 truth, I think mainly of her welfare as a person, as a woman journalist who has risked her life for her work already many times, as someone who has done amazing coverage of horrific crimes like that in Haiti when the democratically elected leader was abducted by the US and taken to Africa in the middle of the night and DNow was the ONLY outlet covering the truth . . . their website was down because the entire world was going there for the truth . . . and so many other stories like that . . . And then I think of how things are getting worse everyday, and this is just one more indicator. The sense of powerlessness one feels is exactly their goal.

But I was relieved to hear she's been released.

Wash Post was the only MSM covering it. Really sad.

Those in the streets need us to make a phone call tomorrow. The pressure does add up and change things. Shame does work in these things. Make the city ashamed it hosted them. We should call the city councilors since they must've signed off on the deal. They're the ones to blame for allowing this.

At the Keene event in May suggested Amy is CIA. I wish he hadn't done that. Amy has not been friendly to 9/11 Truth (meaning she hasn't given it the exposure it deserves), but she has covered it over the years. She has had David Griffin on (and yes, surprised him with Chip Berlet). She has had Dylan & Co on to debate. She has covered Sibel Edmonds several times. She recently confronted Philip Zelikow with regards to the Phil Shenon allegations. No, she has not been friendly to 9/11 Truth to the extent that we would like her to be, but she sure as hell didn't deserve to be arrested.

My own take

is that this just a carefully planned Mockingbird stunt to make Goodman and her CIA-controlled program look as though they're really independent from and fighting the criminal federal regime -- clever misdirection away from the reality of her being their paid agent.

And it's working like a charm. It's just the ploy to grab for an image of credibility that Mockingbird Amy needs to keep fooling her listeners for years to come.

Yep, it's a psy-op

Amy may actually believe that she can do a lot of good while never challenging the fundamentally corrupt underpinnings of our society. But she's wrong.

It's a bit like trying to cure cancer by cleaning up the wound and putting a fresh bandage on it. Unless completely removed, it continues to grow and slowly kill the organism.

There's not much doubt

that her denying the truth of 911 has helped to block many of her followers from accepting the truth. I personally feel that mockingbird or not her and Chomsky are similar to Earl Warren in that despite having been ethical and honorable the vast majority of their lives they betray the truth when history and mankind needed them the most.

I'm not going to say for certain it's so, but I'd be lying if I said that scenario didn't cross my mind.

(For any film buffs here, I find myself thinking of that scene in 'French Connection' where Popeye Doyle--Gene Hackman's character--is carrying out a drug raid in a bar, and gets especially physical with one guy in particular; then, when they're out of everyone else's sight, they start talking to each other like colleagues--because the latter, it is now reavealed, is really a police informant.)

Yes, it looks pretty bad. Just having a video like that out there may be enough to keep some people from demonstrating. Not that Nicole planned it that way.

At this point, I take very little at face value. Very little of what happens in this country and in the media is as it seems.

But given Nicole's brutal treatment, Amy's calm and cool demeanor is weird. Facts only go so far. This is partly a human story, of human suffering, and Amy seems so detached from it.

Twenty years ago the American Civil Liberties Union would've been all over free speech-cancelling events like this: filing for injunctions against the police, preparing class action lawsuits, giving well-publicized media interviews, being right there with the stymied protesters.
