September 11th Advocates Statement Regarding The Closing Of Guantanamo Bay

For immediate release
January 23, 2009

The Guantanamo Bay Detention Center continues to be an enormous stain on America’s reputation. Newly elected President Obama has taken the first step in removing this stain by keeping his campaign promise to the American people.

The temporary halting of proceedings at Gitmo gives us the “audacity to hope” that President Obama will be able to restore America's good name, which has been repeatedly tarnished during the past eight years.

We appreciate the tough decisions that President Obama has been forced to make and admire him for taking these difficult tasks on. We look forward to hearing his plan for closing Guantanamo Bay forever, finding a just way to try the detainees and putting an end to this horrific chapter in America's history.

Whistleblower: NSA spied on everyone, targeted journalists

Former National Security Agency analyst Russell Tice, who helped expose the NSA's warrantless wiretapping in December 2005, has now come forward with even more startling allegations. Tice told MSNBC's Keith Olbermann on Wednesday that the programs that spied on Americans were not only much broader than previously acknowledged but specifically targeted journalists.

"The National Security Agency had access to all Americans' communications -- faxes, phone calls, and their computer communications," Tice claimed. "It didn't matter whether you were in Kansas, in the middle of the country, and you never made foreign communications at all. They monitored all communications."

Tice further explained that "even for the NSA it's impossible to literally collect all communications. ... What was done was sort of an ability to look at the metadata ... and ferret that information to determine what communications would ultimately be collected."

Guantanamo trial halted for 9-11 accused

By Jane Sutton Jane Sutton – Wed Jan 21, 3:56 pm ET

GUANTANAMO BAY U.S. NAVAL BASE, Cuba (Reuters) – A U.S. military judge on Wednesday halted the trial of five prisoners accused of plotting the September 11 attacks, giving President Barack Obama the time he sought to decide whether to scrap the Guantanamo war crimes tribunals.

Obama has pledged to shut down the Guantanamo prison camp that was widely seen as a stain on the United States' human rights record and a symbol of detainee abuse and detention without charge under the Bush administration.

If Obama signs a draft order obtained by Reuters on Wednesday, the prison camp would close within a year.

Hours after taking office on Tuesday, Obama ordered prosecutors in the Guantanamo court to ask for a 120-day halt in all pending cases. He asked for time to review the cases and decide what forum best suits any future prosecution.

Impact of the Department of Homeland Security on local governance, commerce, individual rights and the balance of power

I recently submitted a position paper on the Department of Homeland Security to a local town board after briefly raising the issue at previous town meetings. Local government may be our last best hope exerting a positive influence on the political destiny of the United States.

Impact of the Department of Homeland Security on local governance, commerce, individual rights and the balance of power: a position paper

INTRODUCTION

I recently approached the Town Board informally at its monthly meeting and expressed my concern regarding Department of Homeland Security chief Michael Chertoff’s remarks regarding the overriding of local government policy by Federal policy.

Obama Begins Rollback of Bush-Era Secrecy

Keeping true to his promise of transparency [1], President Barack Obama issued an order today taking the first step toward lifting the veil of secrecy that had shrouded government information for the last eight years.

According to a White House statement:

"In The Presidential Memorandum on Transparency and Open Government (pdf [2]), and the Presidential Memorandum on the Freedom of Information Act (pdf [3]), the President instructs all members of his administration to operate under principles of openness, transparency and of engaging citizens with their government. To implement these principles and make them concrete, the Memorandum on Transparency instructs three senior officials to produce an Open Government Directive within 120 days directing specific actions to implement the principles in the Memorandum. And the Memorandum on FOIA instructs the Attorney General to in that same time period issue new guidelines to the government implementing those same principles of openness and transparency in the FOIA context."

Economic Corruption at the Heart of 9/11

(Let's not forget that the catastrophe of 9/11 brought suffering to many and extraordinary profits to a few. The toxicity of thinking that went into 9/11 paid handsome dividends to speculators, defense contractors, oil companies and a ruling elite whose governance is described below in this latest essay by historian Michael Parenti. Qui Bono applies to the functionaries of false flag operations as well as to the underwriters of the vast sums of capital needed for their life-hating agenda.)

Capitalism’s Self-inflicted Apocalypse

by Michael Parenti

After the overthrow of communist governments in Eastern Europe, capitalism was paraded as the indomitable system that brings prosperity and democracy, the system that would prevail unto the end of history.

The present economic crisis, however, has convinced even some prominent free-marketeers that something is gravely amiss. Truth be told, capitalism has yet to come to terms with several historical forces that cause it endless trouble: democracy, prosperity, and capitalism itself, the very entities that capitalist rulers claim to be fostering.

911blogger.com - 911truth.org - World Can't Wait - all offline on Jan. 20, 2009

For approximately 16 hours, 911blogger.com was offline, starting yesterday at 5:30pm Central Time. This was preceded by World Can't Wait going offline for several hours, and 911truth.org for a few hours as well.

It could very well be a coincidence that two 9/11 sites got knocked out yesterday, and a strong anti-war, anti-imperialist foreign policy site got knocked off to boot. All three sites had server-specific issues, but it is not known at this time if exactly the same issue affected all three sites.

Either way, site users should back up their blog entries, and have a redundant personal blog set up under a different URL. Co-publish here, and at your personal blog, that way, you will always have a copy.
