Story

Two-time Academy Award nominee Jeremy Renner (“The Bourne Legacy”) leads an all-star cast in a dramatic thriller based on the remarkable true story of Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Gary Webb. Webb stumbles onto a story which leads to the shady origins of the men who started the crack epidemic on the nation’s streets…and further alleges that the CIA was aware of major dealers who were smuggling cocaine into the U.S., and using the profits to arm rebels fighting in Nicaragua. Despite warnings from drug kingpins and CIA operatives to stop his investigation, Webb keeps digging to uncover a conspiracy with explosive implications. His journey takes him from the prisons of California to the villages of Nicaragua to the highest corridors of power in Washington, D.C. – and draws the kind of attention that threatens not just his career, but his family and his life.

Coke or Pepsi?

Investigative journalist Gary Webb refused to be complicit. For his courage, the Mockingbird character assassins remembered him with this hit-piece of an obituary: http://www.nytimes.com/2004/12/13/obituaries/13webb.html

After the 2004 election, five weeks before his "suicide", he called out the American people for their apathy and moral cowardice.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/3977503.stm

"What this election tells me, unfortunately, is that it doesn't matter to most Americans if their government lies to them repeatedly.

They no longer care if their leaders erode their civil liberties, push this country further towards a police state, or shroud their actions in additional layers of official secrecy.

They don't mind if their government operates strictly for the benefit of the rich and the corporate class, as long as their own taxes don't go up.

Nor do they care if their government spends itself to the brink of bankruptcy. As long as they feel threatened by some external evil, everything is permitted."

There has a been a wave of suicides, or perhaps "suicides", in the wake of 9/11 that have become more brazenly suspicious as time goes on. The most bluntly suspicious recently are the deaths of Gary Webb, and very recently, Palestinian activist Riad Hamad. (Hamad's death preceded Palfrey only by a couple of weeks.)

Perhaps Ms. Palfrey's death is a legitimate suicide, however, the deaths of people that are inconvenient to the powers-that-be seems to be chugging along at a steady, ugly pace. This is why people are suspicious. I have put together a little list of recent odd suicides, together with a seldom-heard segment from an interview with Ms. Palfrey in 2007. (The interview is from Coast-to-Coast-am, and I want to be clear that I do not offer a general endorsement of the radio program, but Ms. Palfrey is very frank and enlightening in this interview with Ian Punnett, and I hope you'll agree it's worth hearing. She makes it clear that she was not given a regular ride through the justice system, she was targeted, and persecuted, with post-9/11 surveillance of wire transfers playing a key part.)

Two exceptions: One is Anton Ng, who was flat-out executed in Guatemala, he was an associate of Danny Casolaro's, and was killed shortly before Casolaro while researching BCCI. (Researching BCCI was also not very good for Mark Lombardi's health.) Another is Dr. David M. Graham, who appears to have been poisoned, with an intent to make it look he poisoned himself.

Video: Gary Webb's voice lives on.

Continuing an association with justicevision.org, 911blogger.com presents another talk from Gary Webb that has not been available on the internet until now. The first video of Webb (1996) is viewable here. This talk with Martha Honey, (hosted by Dennis Bernstein), is from a couple of years later (1998). By this time, Webb's employer had turned on him and would not defend Webb's research. So Webb put out his highly recommended book, Dark Alliance.

With the recent release and broadcast of American Drug War, the story of "Freeway" Ricky Ross is being disseminated into the public consciousness like never before. Webb was the reporter who broke the story, and the subsequent links to the CIA, at the San Jose Mercury News. (The original stories have been reproduced on the Narconews website.)

In 2006, author Nick Shou put out a book about Webb and his demise, called Kill the Messenger. It is now being written for the screen.

Remember that Webb's death was ruled a suicide. Suicide by two gunshot wounds to the head. This ranks up there with the strange death of Danny Casolaro. Were they both investigating two arms of the same Octopus?

Part 1 of 4

The Darkest Alliance

We have crossed an awful threshold. The leaders of the "free world" have admitted--after years of denials and scapegoating of "bad apples"--to authorizing torture. They have admitted they are war criminals. And still impeachment hearings have not begun.

Now they have said it to our faces. What are we going to do about it?

New Video: "Cocaine & the Contras" - Robert Parry & Gary Webb

"Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." - George Santayana.

In association with justicevision.org, 911blogger.com will be putting some of their great documentary footage on the web. We're going to start with some footage of Gary Webb, a courageous journalist who exposed CIA connections to the crack cocaine epidemic in the United States. In this first video from December 1996, Webb was still employed by the San Jose Mercury News. You can read his original series which began his journey into Deep Politics, over at Narconews.com. This video, "Cocaine & the Contras", was filmed at the Midnight Special Bookstore in Santa Monica, CA, a few months after his story broke. He is accompanied by independent journalist, Robert Parry, whom Webb describes as a "pioneer" in this area. Robert Parry's website is Consortium News.com.

Gary Webb's voice was silenced in 2004, and was ruled a suicide. However, his story will still be heard.
