Obama Veto Is Threatened on 2010 Intelligence Budget Measure

March 15 (Bloomberg) -- President Barack Obama probably would veto legislation authorizing the next budget for U.S. intelligence agencies if it calls for a new investigation into the 2001 anthrax attacks, an administration official said.

A proposed probe by the intelligence agencies’ inspector general “would undermine public confidence” in an FBI probe of the attacks “and unfairly cast doubt on its conclusions,” Peter Orszag, director of the Office of Management and Budget, wrote in a letter to leaders of the House and Senate Intelligence committees.

On Feb. 19, the Obama administration released a 92-page summary of a Federal Bureau of Investigation probe that said the late Bruce Ivins, a government scientist, was behind the attacks. Lawmakers including Representative Rush Holt, a New Jersey Democrat, have questioned the thoroughness of the investigation.

ATLANTA – Law enforcement officers who worked near ground zero after the World Trade Center attacks seem to show early signs of heart problems at a higher rate than would be expected for their age, a new study suggests.

Nearly half of about 1,200 law enforcement workers who went to Mount Sinai Medical Center's program in New York to monitor medical effects from the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attack showed some impaired heart function on ultrasound tests. The study was released Saturday at an American College of Cardiology conference.

"This is the first study to suggest a potential link between exposure to ground zero and early preclinical heart abnormalities," said Dr. Lori Croft, who led the work. Inhaling dust particles that can cause lung and heart disease may be to blame, she said.

U.S. Rep. Rush Holt (NJ-12) succeeded in including language in the 2010 Intelligence Authorization Bill that would require the Inspector General of the Intelligence Community to examine the possibility of a foreign connection to the 2001 anthrax attacks. The amendment was added less than a week after the FBI arbitrarily closed its investigation.

On Monday morning, February 15, 2010, in a Madrid courtroom, Judge Balthazar Garzon will formally convene his investigation of War Crimes and Crimes Against Humanity allegedly committed by officials, at various levels, of the Government of the United States and their surrogates in and from a variety of other countries.

The investigation by the Spanish Magistrate could go on for several months and involve testimony from a range of victims, some of whom are Spanish nationals who allegedly were detained and brutally tortured over a considerable period of time. The investigation by Judge Garzon will be the first formal, comprehensive examination of the alleged criminal activity which occurred in the post 9/11 period and could lead to a number of officials being charged and ordered to stand trial.

It is expected that the first witness will be Dr. William F. Pepper, the international human rights Barrister and Attorney, who was asked by the Court to file an Opinion and testify as an expert on the issue of jurisdiction of the Spanish Court with respect to the various crimes being alleged which include Waging Aggressive War, Kidnapping/Extraordinary Rendition, Arbitrary Detention, War Crimes and Crimes Against Humanity and Torture.

US Attorney General Eric Holder appeared in an interview published Friday to leave open the option of abandoning a civilian trial for accused September 11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed.

Holder's interview with the Washington Post came amid a backlash at the Obama administration's attempt to bring some terror suspects to justice through civil rather than military courts and to try Sheikh Mohammed in New York.

"At the end of the day, wherever this case is tried, in whatever forum, what we have to ensure is that it's done as transparently as possible and with adherence to all the rules," Holder told the Post.

"If we do that, I'm not sure the location or even the forum is as important as what the world sees in that proceeding."

Holder made clear to the Post, however, that a military trial of Mohammed, who is currently in the US detention center at Guantanamo Bay, was neither his personal nor legal preference.

Manny Badillo says that you see an explosion from the inside, not what it has seemed to be, he says there has never been a building taken down by a plane.

ABC News recently obtained these images after filing a Freedom of Information Act request in 2009 with the National Institute of Standards and Technology, which had collected as part of an investigation into the collapse of the World Trade Center.

In August ABC News saw that the NIST was asking various photographers for permission to release images they collected from the investigation, completed in 2005, into the collapse of the World Trade Centers.
