I just called the Randi Rhodes show when I heard her give the number out, and, unexpectedly, got right on the air. I did not have my thoughts as collected as I would have liked and I was a little bit startled with how quickly things got snarky and snarly. So, I apologize if I was not that focused. But it seemed like it got some of the info out and got a good discussion going about journalism, blogging and "sandbagging." So, here is my open email in response to Randi. "Huge New York Rehearsal for Next Terror Attack"

Hundreds of firefighters and police swarmed Ground Zero Sunday, the site where the World Trade Center once stood, in the largest security exercise here since the September 11, 2001 attacks.

As part of an elaborate dress rehearsal for a possible future terror strike, rescue workers exploded simulated bombs in a commuter train tunnel linking Manhattan to neighboring New Jersey, burrowed beneath the Hudson River.

"Full-scale exercises like today's give us an opportunity to practice how to integrate the vast response resources available in New York City and establish a command structure under the Citywide Incident Management System," said Joseph Bruno, commissioner at the city's Office of Emergency Management.

As the tunnel filled with smoke, scores of firefighters wearing oxygen masks practiced maneuvers to rescue some 700 to 800 passengers -- the number who might be expected to become stranded along the vital commuter line in the event of a real disaster.

May 15, 2009, Los Angeles, CA - Vice President Joseph Biden and LA Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa took a tour of a community housing project of the Esperanza Community Housing Corp.

Jeremy Rothe-Kushel and Bruno Bruhwiler of WACLA Media sat among other members of the local press in the glaring sun in wait for the press conference scheduled to begin after the Vice President and the Mayor toured one of the buildings renovated by the Esperanza Community Housing Corporation. Secret Service officers were present in abundance in the 10' wide corridor where we were crammed behind residents of the renovated apartment complex. All of us were in close quarters with each other for at least one hour, and we all developed a courteous and jovial relationship with each other. The folks from Fox News were the most vocal, and they were not shy about their dislike for Biden and Obama. Later it turned out that one of the Fox reporters had a hot and healthy obsession with asking the Vice President about Karl Rove. One woman, an admittedly former journalist turned passionate advocate, claimed that although we were sitting in the scorching sun, our current position would probably be envied by most everyone in the rest of the country. It was not entirely clear whether she was referring to the Southern California weather or our proximity to a representative of the Hope and Change Administration™.

The only thing I have read about this strange event that asked the right question was on wsws.org, one of my favorite sites. Alex Lantier wrote on April 29:

How could one of two specially-designed presidential jets be requisitioned for a flight over New York City, where nearly 3,000 were killed in the 9/11 attacks, without the knowledge of the president, the mayor or high-ranking US military officials such as the defense secretary and the joint chiefs of staff? If the official story is indeed true, it raises the question of who is in control of the US military.

The White House internal review published a week later, I think, answers the question: the US military is in control of the US military.

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Hundreds of firefighters, police and medical personnel descended on lower Manhattan on Sunday near the site of the September 11 attacks for an emergency response drill simulating an explosion on a commuter train in a tunnel between New York and New Jersey.

Large sections of the financial district were closed to vehicles and pedestrians as emergency vehicles raced to the area with lights flashing and sirens blaring in the largest such practice event since the 2001 attacks.

Authorities issued warnings of the event, trying to avoid panic like one caused by an unannounced flyover by a U.S. presidential plane in New York Harbor just weeks ago.

The exercise, involving more than 800 emergency services personnel, simulated the aftermath of a pair of bombs exploding on a commuter train with hundreds of injured passengers, all complicated by a malfunctioning communications system.
