As chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, Sen. Pat Roberts’s (R-KS) duty is “to provide vigilant legislative oversight over the intelligence activities of the United States” and “to assure that such activities are in conformity with the Constitution and laws of the United States.” But on the most important intelligence issues facing Americans – such as the manipulation of Iraq intelligence, warrantless domestic spying, and torture - Roberts has transformed his committee into a “Senate Coverup Committee” for the Bush administration.
Roberts has made clear both his support for Bush’s warrantless domestic spying program and his contempt for those who question the program’s legality. On March 7, his committee once again abdicated its oversight responsibilities and “voted against an investigation of the president’s warrantless domestic spying program.” Roberts instead made a deal with the White House to “allow wiretapping without warrants for up to 45 days.” Ranking Member Jay Rockefeller called the move “proof that the White House controls the Intelligence Committee.”

Roberts Believes In Virtually Unlimited Presidential Power. Tim Russert asked Roberts on Meet the Press, “Do you believe that the Constitution gives the president of the United States the authority to do anything he believes is necessary to protect the country?” “Yes,” Roberts replied, “but I wouldn’t say anything he believes.” “I think you go at it very, very carefully, and that’s been done by every president that I know of.” [Meet the Press, 2/12/06]

It’s only just over four weeks to the day of truth for America and its civil liberties, the day through which we will finally know if there are free and fair elections in the United States of America. That is, above all, the number one crisis of our time and progressives, progressive Democrats and plain old centrist Democrats better know it. If we don’t take this election our wars will grow bigger, our children will be fighting them in greater numbers and there will be very little potential for resistance from the middle class.

This week Bob Woodward’s book hit the pages and the television screens and proclaimed loudly that the Bush administration is a “state of denial” about all things wrong with the war on Iraq. Too coded for my taste, Woodward, hedged and distinguished between Bush’s personal optimism (he truly believes in this war) and his and his fellow criminally negligent (at the very least) cohorts—Cheney, Rice, Rumsfeld, Ashcroft, Card, etc. But we and most Americans know the truth. Bush lies. He lied about Iraq. He lied about Katrina. He lied about September 11th, 2001.

in this piece I put together to help those who are still
inclined to the official story see things a bit more clearly.

Scale this whole thing to a useful size for some more ideas, that's what's so beautiful about thought experiments, you can do all this stuff - imagine a box in your driveway or something about 10 feet tall and 2 feet square of the same matrix like steel construction, with that core and walls of steel, and 'floors' of crossbracing every inch or so, anchored firmly to a cement foundation a few inches under the cement driveway - and then I give you a somewhat elongated cigar tube of about an inch in diameter and a foot in length (and remember, scaling everything, the 'walls' of the cigar tube will be sort of the thickness of a sheet of paper or something like that), a hollow lightweight aluminum tube (imagine it with appropriately scaled wings if you like). Your instructions are to imagine loading that hollow tube into an elephant gun or something, and firing it into the ten foot tall steel matrix somewhere near the top, and thinking about how much structural damage it would cause to your ten foot by two foot by two foot steel matrix anchored below your cement driveway. Look at that one inch tube in your hand, and that ten foot tall steel box in your driveway. Think about it. Are you getting some idea of the scale of things, the actual size of that airplane compared to the WTC? If you were a betting person, would you bet on that cigar tube initiating a 'global destruction' sequence - or not?

Is very interesting to say the least.  This goes beyond any "power down".  I have heard other witness statements in the past that said the FBI was all over the towers the week before the attacks, and may even have had the building cordoned off.  I wish I remember where I read those statements.

Anyone else have any information on this?  If we can prove the FBI was swarming the towers the week before the attacks, that would be yet another smoking gun. 

While the 911 madness is rife, there is always sanity in Chomsky. While he does not care to speculate on the greatest insanity, 9/11 false flag terror, he does always provide for good orientation and morally sound, common-sensical arguments .. kinda important in the ocean of spin. But you knew that. Anyway... just to keep us on the straight and narrow, read this seemingly tame review...

The seamy side of U.S. foreign policy

Perhaps any country’s self-image suffers from a kind of fun-house mirror effect -- it sees itself very differently from the way the rest of the world does. Certainly Noam Chomsky’s Failed States: The Abuse of Power and the Assault on Democracy demonstrates that the United States operates that way. Given that our government has taken on the management of so much of the world, it becomes crucially important for Americans to understand that distortion. So, if you can read only one book in that effort this year, this probably should be the one.

Mr. Chomsky’s analysis of American foreign policy differs so dramatically from the official version that some may find it disorientating, not because of any fast and loose rhetoric on Mr. Chomsky’s part but because of his deployment of a stunning array of sources in a relentless accounting of the hypocrisy with which Washington so often confronts the world.

Rice Loyalist Headed 9/11 Commission Probes

Bob Woodward's State of Denial provides evidence of the politicization of the 9/11 Commission's investigative process, conclusions, and certain omissions from its report, as well as then national security advisor Condoleezza Rice's likely role in burying unflattering, damning evidence through the appointment of Bush/Rice loyalist Philip Zelikow (PHOTO RIGHT) as the Commissions' chief investigator and Zelikow's reward (perhaps) of a top senior-level position in the State Department, which Rice now heads. First, some background.

One of the burning questions in newspapers, cable TV news, and blogs is why the 9/11 Commission report did not mention the July 10, 2001 meeting called by then-CIA Director George J. Tenet and his counterterrorism chief, J. Cofer Black, with then-national security adviser Condoleezza Rice. Tenet and Black hoped to impress on Rice the compelling need to act immediately against bin Laden because there was "a huge volume of data" suggesting strongly that a major attack was imminent.

As we all know, September 11, 2001 started-out as a beautiful day: bright, cool, a picture-perfect day indeed. There was no thought of horror and death until the horror and death truly struck. As with any tragedy that comes upon our lives so unexpectedly and violently (car crash, plane crash, heart attack, etc.) we're preoccupied with our important (and not so important) concerns when the tragedy strikes. That day, 9/11 (as it's now forever known) was certainly no exception, surpassing everything we had previously experienced. Who had ever witnessed two massive skyscrapers crumble into dust? The correct answer is No One. This had never happened before in human history. Without even going to and through the various web sites that analyze the ifs and hows of building demolition, it should've been apparent to most people from the start that steel constructed buildings simply do not disinegrate and almost vanish before our eyes. Nonetheless, the Towers (along with Tower 7) did certainly crumble into dust. However, what's happened in the five years since that fateful day? Where is the great "War on Terror" that was in all the papers? I live here in New York City...there's still an empty lot called Ground Zero which signifies what was rebuilt there! Is there anyone out there who believes that we are fighting a REAL WAR on terrorism?...or, for that matter, ANYTHING? We are (for most part) silent witnesses to absurd "wars" in two countries; we merely tally the body count.

The Road to Authoritarianism

Behold and bear witness to what has become of America, in this era of uncertainty and bewilderment, in this time of fear and intimidation, that since towers were brought down and demolished has methodically fallen into the viper pit of neocon decadence, becoming, as it stands today, an authoritarian’s heaven and a corporatist’s promised land, its people ignorant, as always, to the barrage of waves systemically eroding centuries of rights, freedoms and liberties. From sea to shining sea, despotism is what today those who pay attention see.

The road to fascism is being paved at a clandestine yet alarming velocity, across valleys, prairies and forests, surrounding cites, towns and states, from Atlantic to Pacific, immersing 300 million individuals into a fog of engendered tyranny, who without a care or whisper or concern remain trapped by comfortable surroundings born through perpetual indebtedness. Even as their rights and freedoms and liberties are made to disappear, even as their Constitution is burned, even as their nation hangs on the precipice of despotism, even as their collective destiny is being destroyed those residing inside the belly of the beast hear no evil, see no evil and feel no evil, preferring to gossip about pedophile politicians and celebrity failings than informing themselves to the last throes of the American republic.
