In 1971, Muhammad Ali Helped Undermine the FBI’s Illegal Spying on Americans

Since his death a few days ago, countless tributes to Muhammad Ali have brought to life the memories of his extraordinary accomplishments inside and outside boxing. But one thing has gotten little attention: Ali provided cover for a burglary that changed history.
It was March 8, 1971, the night of Ali’s first fight with Joe Frazier, and the noise from that epic battle provided cover for the break-in of an FBI office in Media, Pennsylvania. The burglary, by eight activists who stole every file in the office, revealed the illegal spying operations that FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover had organized against a broad swath of Americans, including Martin Luther King Jr. The revelations led to congressional investigations and major reforms of all intelligence agencies.
COINTELPRO: The FBI's Domestic War
http://www.thepeopleshistory.net/2014/03/cointelpro-fbis-domestic-war.html
"Between 1965 and 1975, the FBI opened more than 500,000 intelligence files on more than one million Americans, according to a Congressional report.... Among the Bureau's targets: Martin Luther King and the civil rights movement, anti-Vietnam War Groups, and the underground press." - Center for Investigative Reporting1
"Purpose of counterintelligence action is to disrupt the BPP [Black Panther Party] and it is immaterial whether facts exist to substantiate the charge." - J. Edgar Hoover2
J. Edgar Hoover issued directives for COINTELPRO, a codename for Counter Intelligence Program, in 1956. The original intent was to monitor the Communist Party USA but quickly expanded its scope to infiltrate and marginalize a variety of groups such as the American Indian Movement, the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, and the Black Panthers, as well as targeting high profile individuals such as Martin Luther King, Jr.
The FBI's stated motivation was "protecting national security, preventing violence, and maintaining the existing social and political order."3 (Emphasis added). They used harassment, wiretapping, psychological warfare, propaganda, and assassinations among other techniques to achieve their goals.

America.gov, Cognitive Infiltration, and Obama appointee Cass Sunstein
Includes interviews with John Judge and David Ray Griffin:
"I first became aware of Cass Sunstein’s ideas for controlling conspiracy theories after seeing several ads for a web site called America.gov run by the State Department. It’s a complex, well-funded site with more avenues than I’ve cared to examine, but what caught my attention was the section under International Relations: Peace and Security called “Conspiracy Theories and Misinformation” with the astounding caption: “Conspiracy theories exist in the realm of myth, where imaginations run wild, fears trump facts and evidence is ignored.”

Excellent New Reviews of "Cognitive Infiltration"
Although many people read the reviews of new books at Amazon.com, it's likely that most people stop reading reviews of a book after it has been out for a few months. But sometimes some of the best reviews have appeared late. I have here reposted three excellent recent reviews of David Ray Griffin’s “Cognitive Infiltration: An Obama Appointee’s Plan to Undermine the 9/11 Conspiracy Theory.”

Cass Sunstein is a highly regarded, pedigreed constitutional scholar and lawyer. He graduated from Harvard Law School magna cum laude, clerked for Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, and taught at arguably two of America's most prestigious law schools, the University of Chicago and Harvard. Mr. Sunstein is now the Adminisrator in the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs (OIRA) for President Barak Obama.

David who describes himself as a “pacifist” talks in great depth about his journey on the campaign for 9/11 Truth and Justice which he is passionately dedicated. Many of you may be aware it was David who is credited with getting NIST to admit WTC Building 7 fell at a an acceleration consistent with free-fall due to gravity; which I and many others view as the single most powerful debating tool for us as 9/11 Truth advocates! David disputes he is solely responsible for this and says that Jones, Ryan and others were central to this achievement but it was his question that drew the answer in the end so it seems. David also talks about the highly political timing and nature of the NIST Building 7 report.
Celebrate 2011 MLK Day with "The Truth from the Trial" won by the King Family in Memphis in 1999!
As Project Censored states in their 2011 Book, we are in a crisis that may well be described as a "Truth Emergency". This has been a deep problem for US society for many years. However, it most certainly got accelerated after the exploitation of the 9/11 attacks to promote war, surveillance, and a new wave of repressive laws named in Orwellian fashion as the so-called "Patriot Act".
Are you aware that the King family took a civil suit into a Memphis court in 1999 with William Pepper as their lawyer? They presented numerous witnesses who had been steadfastly avoided by the Memphis police and government investigators. Are you aware of any of the following information? If not, why not? If yes, will you be getting this information out as part of your 2011 observance of the life and legacy of Martin Luther King? Read on please...
William Pepper is a legendary American author, British barrister, and King family lawyer. Martin Luther King contacted William Pepper after reading an article Pepper had written in Ramparts magazine about the effects of the Vietnam War on the children of Vietnam. He invited Pepper to speak to his congregation, which was the beginning of a life-long friendship with MLK and his family. William Pepper continued to investigate the assassination of MLK for years, and he represented the King family in court.
The King family and William Pepper got considerable criticism in the mainstream press for stating that they did not believe that James Earl Ray was the killer of King. In 1999 they won a trial in a Memphis, Tennessee court from a jury of six whites and six blacks. They won a unanimous conviction of Loyd Jowers and “unnamed government conspirators” for the murder of Martin Luther King. King was executed in broad daylight at the Lorraine Motel on April 4, 1968. Jowers was the owner of Jim’s Grill across the street from the Lorraine Motel where some of the assassination planning was done. Jowers and waitresses from that era gave testimony that persuaded the American jury that there was a “conspiracy” to execute Dr King. William Pepper later wrote a book about the trial and the lack of fair or even any media coverage in the case of their victory. William Pepper’s book is called “An Act of State: The Execution of Martin Luther King”.
I wrote a song to highlight some of the facts revealed in the trial and the book. Then I made a video for it and posted it on YouTube. Have you watched it? The lyrics are below...

One way to be true to the dream and the commitment of the Rev Dr King would be to get this information out into the sunlight of public discussion as part of this year's celebration of who he really was! He would be marching stalwartly on Obama's White House and on the now Republican controlled US Congress. The book is in public libraries. Here is a link to a free mp3 download of the song. David Ray Griffin v. Cass Sunstein
by Stephen Lendman
Griffin is Professor of Philosophy of Religion and Theology, Emeritus, Claremont School of Theology and Claremont Graduate University, Claremont, CA where he's still co-director of the Center for Process Studies.
He's authored and/or edited three dozen books, mainly in his field, but notably and heroically on 9/11 truth, Osama bin Laden, and his newest titled, "Cognitive Infiltration: An Obama Appointee's Plan to Undermine the 9/11 Conspiracy Theory." More on it below.
Cass Sunstein is a well-known University of Chicago and Harvard Law School Professor before being appointed Obama's Administrator of the White House Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs, in charge of "overseeing policies relating to privacy, information quality, and statistical programs," among other duties.

ShareIf it has been difficult for American leaders to influence the country’s foreign policy since the military-industrial complex wrested control from the state office after the Second World War, it has proven impossible to do so since the US sealed its Faustian bargain with Israel on 9/11. The US Empire is damned if it does cut the flow of money and arms to Israel and damned if it doesn’t.
The truth about 9/11 is going to emerge one way or another. How the momentum is managed will determine who is left without a chair when the music finally grinds to halt. While it’s broadly in both the US and Israeli governments interests to keep a lid on the truth by distracting the US population any which way it can, there appears to be a game of hide and seek taking place through the media to prepare the ground and cast one or the other in the role of villain. This was in evidence these past few weeks as ‘9/11 Truth’ hit the mainstream like never before.
Barrie Zwicker: The Peace Movement versus the 9/11Truth movement
[Submitted to 911Blogger via email - LW]
Report from Boston
The Peace Movement versus the 9/11Truth movement
by Barrie Zwicker
What goes with the “split” between the anti-war movement and the 9/11Truth movement? Some light was shed on this regrettable reality in Boston the weekend of Jan. 30-31, 2010. On Saturday New England United (NEU), an umbrella group, held an anti-war strategy conference. The next day Northeast 9/11Truth held its strategy conference, in part an analysis of the previous day’s events.
As both a lifelong member of the peace movement, and a committed 9/11Truther, I attended all of the Saturday conference where I was a workshop leader, and the first half of the Sunday conference (having to leave early because of travel arrangements). My main points:
1) There is a split but it has not been initiated, nor is it maintained, by members of the 9/11Truth movement. Truthers stand just as proudly and tall in their opposition to war as anyone in the peace movement. Truthers also are just as fully dedicated to the goals of justice, equality and environmentalism as are anti-war activists.
2) The split is unilateral from the anti-war movement’s side, especially from leaders and organizers. Those at the grassroots level trust and take their cues from the leaders. The result is a widespread attitude toward 9/11Truth that ranges from scepticism to outright hostility. This is why I choose the heading “The Peace Movement versus the 9/11Truth Movement.”
3) A leading cause of the unilateral split is the work of planted agents of the state – spooks -- whose instructions are to do this splitting. The Chinese call such agents “splittists.” The peace movement has been around for decades, so there’s been loads of time for the national security state to install numerous agents within it. Added to their usual instructions to slyly foment divisiveness within peace groups and derail effective anti-war actions are new orders to combat the dynamic truth movement.
Mukasey's Justice Department Codifies COINTELPRO Into FBI "Ground Rules"
Every once in a while, the Washington Post actually prints something of note. Yesterday, they published this article, Rule Changes Would Give FBI Agents Extensive New Powers. Previously, the FBI was required to have a case before they started screwing around with you. Under Mukasey's "New Rules", we now have a situation ripe for abuse. The Justice Department is currently working out the wording for placing "undisclosed participants" in organizations;
The changes would give the FBI's more than 12,000 agents the ability at a much earlier stage to conduct physical surveillance, solicit informants and interview friends of people they are investigating without the approval of a bureau supervisor. Such techniques are currently available only after FBI agents have opened an investigation and developed a reasonable suspicion that a crime has been committed or that a threat to national security is developing...
The overhaul touches on several sensitive areas. It would allow, for example, agents to interview people in the United States about foreign intelligence cases without warrants or prior approval of their supervisors. It also would rewrite 1976 guidelines established after Nixon-era abuses that restrict the FBI's authority to intervene in times of civil disorder and to infiltrate opposition groups...
Monitoring conversations between informants who agree to wear recording devices and subjects of investigations, which now requires the permission of an assistant U.S. attorney, could occur without a prosecutor's approval...
The new approach would relax some of those requirements and would expand the investigative techniques that agents could use to include deploying informants...
Policy guidance for FBI agents and informants who work as "undisclosed participants" in organizations is still being written, the officials said yesterday.
Just in time for the November elections.

On July 24, about 100 people gathered in Baltimore for a forum to stand up against a long-term spying operation conducted by the Maryland State Police against anti-death penalty and antiwar activists.
The surveillance and infiltration of the groups took place while Republican Robert Ehrlich was governor, according to 43 pages of state police reports recently released to the ACLU. The spying continued month after month despite the fact that the state's agents never recorded a single illegal act among the groups' protest activities. This week, the current governor, Martin O'Malley, appointed a panel to review the state police surveillance operation against the anti-death penalty and antiwar movements.
Dave Zirin, a sportswriter and activist, was one of the activists named in the spying reports. At the July 24 meeting, he talked about his reactions to the spy scandal and activists' plans for "going on offense."

Military Report: Secretly 'Recruit or Hire Bloggers'
Military Report: Secretly 'Recruit or Hire Bloggers'
By Noah Shachtman EmailMarch 31, 2008 | 1:11:05 PMCategories: Info War
Ff_118_milblogs2_fA study, written for U.S. Special Operations Command, suggested "clandestinely recruiting or hiring prominent bloggers."
Since the start of the Iraq war, there's been a raucous debate in military circles over how to handle blogs -- and the servicemembers who want to keep them. One faction sees blogs as security risks, and a collective waste of troops' time. The other (which includes top officers, like Gen. David Petraeus and Lt. Gen. William Caldwell) considers blogs to be a valuable source of information, and a way for ordinary troops to shape opinions, both at home and abroad.
This 2006 report for the Joint Special Operations University, "Blogs and Military Information Strategy," offers a third approach -- co-opting bloggers, or even putting them on the payroll. "Hiring a block of bloggers to verbally attack a specific person or promote a specific message may be worth considering," write the report's co-authors, James Kinniburgh and Dororthy Denning.
